Virginia Lee (Hawn) Reed, 91, of Little York IN, passed away on Monday, February 19, 2024 at the Salem Crossing facility in Salem IN. She was born February 15, 1933 in Michigan IN to the late David Hawn and the late Anna E (Smelser) Hawn. She was married to the late Byron F Reed. Virginia was a Christian by faith. She was a graduate of Indiana University with a Masters Degree in Education and retired from teaching at Marion Adams High School in Sheridan IN. After retirement, Virginia & Byron enjoyed traveling to National Parks. She immensely enjoyed being outdoors in nature and was an accomplished photographer. She didn’t just take pictures, she developed and printed the pictures, after having constructed her own dark room for her photography. The family was always amazed at her ability to teach herself anything just by reading about a subject. She enjoyed cooking and everyone loved her broccoli salad. Survivors: daughter Lisa A Mann & husband Rick of Little York; 8 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren. Emogene Zimmerman, age 95, of Salem, Indiana passed away on Wednesday, February 7, 2024. She was born on August 8, 1928, to the late Oscar and Ossie Babbitt. Emogene was a kind soul with a heart of gold. She did not always have a lot but would give you what she did have if you needed it. She was a farm girl and enjoyed wildlife and all kinds of animals. She also enjoyed attending church when she was able. Along with her parents, she is preceded in death by her siblings, Ramond Overstreat, Thomas Babbitt, Ledie Babbitt, Bob Babbit, Cliford Babbitt, Johny Dean Babbitt, Darrel Babbitt, Nina Croninger, and Bonnie Mae Babbitt. She is survived by brothers, Earl Babbitt, and George Herbert Babbitt; sisters, Elimina Nichols and Susan Durban. Visitation for Emogene will be held on Wednesday, February 14, 2024, from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM at Kraft Funeral Service, 2776 Charlestown Road, New Albany, IN 47150. Mrs. Carol Jeanne Shafer Bedwell, age 79, of Salem, passed away Monday, February 5 at St. Vincent Hospital, Salem. Jeanne was born July 16, 1944, in Louisville, Kentucky, the daughter of Reverend Floyd Doud Shafer and Carol Jeanne Parsons Shafer. Jeanne graduated from Salem High School in 1962. That summer, she married James Apple and they attended Purdue University together. After James graduated, they returned to Salem with their sons, Jimmy and Dan. While raising their children, James was a pharmacist for the family drugstore, Apple Drugs. In 1973, Jeanne finished her first degree at Indiana University Southeast. Seven years later she earned a Master’s Degree in Secondary Education with a focus on English Education from Indiana University, Bloomington. She began her career as an educator by joining the faculty of Salem High School in 1977, where she taught English until she retired in 2005. Throughout her years at Salem High School, Jeanne served as National Honor Society Advisor. When her son, Jimmy, began playing basketball, and son, Dan, became a student manager for basketball and football, Jeanne’s time and interest was diverted to sports. Jeanne was a beloved teacher in the school system. In 1998, she received the Daghlian High School Teacher of English award from Indiana University Department of English. The following year, she received an Academic All-Star Certificate of Merit from the Indiana Academic Competitions for Excellence. Jeanne was also a very active member of the community. She was a member of Tri-Kappa, P.E.O. Sisterhood, Daughters of the American Revolution, Possibilities Book Club, Colonial Dames XVIIC, SHS Alumni Association, Salem Classroom Teachers Association, and Delta Kappa Gamma. Jeanne is survived by her husband: Max Bedwell of Salem. They were married December 25, 1987. She is also survived by two sons: Dr. James Apple (Shinobu) of Calgary, Canada and Daniel Apple of Scottsburg, a step-son: Stephen Bedwell (Rita) of Rockville, Indiana, a brother: Floyd Shafer of Robinson, Illinois, a sister: Rebecca McLaughlin of Tucson, Arizona, 4 step-grandchildren, and 17 step-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a step-daughter: Deanna Bedwell and her parents. A memorial service will be held Sunday, February 11 at 2:00PM at Weathers Funeral Home. Born on May 15, 1944, to the late Edward and Edith Jackson, Ray dedicated his working years to Jeff Boat Shipyard as a skilled steel fitter until his well-earned retirement. A man of faith, Ray attended church services at Palmyra United Methodist Church whenever his health allowed. His zest for life was evident in his love for the great outdoors, where he found joy in hunting, fishing, and indulging his passion for coon hunting. Ray's adventurous spirit extended to his fascination with building mud bogging trucks, and he took pleasure in testing their limits, creating lasting memories in the process. Ray was preceded in death by his loving wife of 50 years, Patty Sue Jackson. Survivors include his sons, Charles “Chucky” Jackson (Rose) of New Albany, Indiana, Billy Jackson (Bobi) of Otisco, Indiana, his daughters, Donna Beavin (Carl) of Fredericksburg, Indiana, Deloris “Sissy) Jackson of Seymour, Indiana and his grandchildren, Jessica Beavin, Sarah Jackson, Alex Jackson and Trent Jackson. Ray also leaves his 3 great-grandchildren to cherish his memory, Asher, Tristan and Harleigh. Janice was born February 14, 1938, in Cold Spring, Kentucky, to the late Rev. Leo & Edna V. (Waymire) Sheffel. She was also preceded in death by her husband, John Stahl Jr.; son, Terry L. Walters; and sister, Carol Oaks. Janice is survived by her children, Penny (Billy) Chandler of Salem, Indiana, Joseph (Karla) Walters of Union City, Ohio, and Mark Walters of Salem, Indiana; 9 grandchildren; and numerous great grandchildren. Janice retired from General Motors with 25 years of service. She was a caregiver for her parents and husband. She loved animals. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 am Tuesday, January 30, 2024, at Zechar Bailey Funeral Home in Greenville with Pastor Jim Meredith officiating.
