Ms. Frankye June Hutchins, age 84 of Ararat, passed away peacefully on Monday morning, September 11, 2023. Ms. Hutchins was born on October 22, 1938 in Chatham County, North Carolina to the late Gratsie & Nina Bryant Sawyers. She spent her working years as a truck driver. She loved driving her truck. When she wasn't on the road, she enjoyed spending her time in her garden planting flowers. Those left to cherish her memory include her children, William "Buddy" Hutchins & wife Barbara, Terri Ratliff & husband Tim, Mark Hutchins, Mechale Johnson & husband Timothy; as well as seven grandchildren & eight great-grandchildren. In addition to her parents, Frankye was preceded in death by two of her siblings, James Sawyers & Gloris Moser. Committal will take place on Wednesday, September 13, 2023 at Ararat Friends Cemetery at 10:00am. Donald Lee Terrell, 85, of Ararat, died Sept. 28. Don was born June 13, 1938, in Surry County, son of Virgil and Mallie Gilley Terrell. On Sept. 24, 1960, he married Faye Armstrong. They celebrated their 63rd wedding anniversary. Don spent decades working at RJ Reynolds in Winston-Salem while maintaining a cattle farm. During his Flat Rock school years, he and a classmate evacuated the building during the school fire going door to door saving lives. Don was a longtime member of Simmons Grove Baptist Church and active in the Brotherhood. Featured in many articles, he raised hunting dogs and enjoyed field trials, winning numerous awards, including national championships. Don spent many mornings at Hardee’s with friends. He was a hard-working Christian and wonderful neighbor. Don was predeceased by his sisters, Mary Frances Tucker and Louise Mears. Survivors, in addition to wife Faye Armstrong, include son, Donald Lee "Donny" Terrell Jr. (Diana) of Oak Ridge; daughter, Sonya Braun (Kevin) of Stone Mountain, Ga. ; grandchildren, Dalton Terrell (Molly) of Vienna, Va. ; Cody Braun (Tate), of Marietta, Ga. ; Casey Braun (fiancée Hayden Hunt) of Atlanta; Dash Terrell, of Kernersville; and Tori Bissram of Chapel Hill; great-grandchildren, Caroline and Patrick Terrell; Goldie Braun and sisters-in-law, Frances (Glenn) Cook; and Mary Ellen (Byron) Wells. Visitation is Sunday, Oct. 1 at 3 pm with funeral at 4:30 pm at Simmons Grove Baptist Church of Pilot Mountain. Flowers or donations to Simmons Grove Baptist Church Brotherhood are encouraged. Mrs. Celia Ann Wall Shinault, age 89 of Ararat, passed away peacefully at her home on Saturday, September 2nd. Mrs. Shinault was born on January 22, 1934 in Surry County to the late John Wesley & Bessie Cummings Wall. She spent her life living where she was born & where she loved, in the beautiful Surry County. She was a farmer by trade & did everything you could think of, from raising tobacco & chickens to raising her youngins. When she wasn't working, she could be found playing Uno with her family. She was an avid card player & taught her children & grandchildren how to shuffle cards & play Uno as soon as they were old enough. Celia loved to help people in any way that she could. She cared for her mother & everybody else that she was able to care for, for as long as she was able to. She did more for everybody else than she did for herself. She was a collector of many things, specifically dimes & seashells. She loved going to the beach with her family & looking for the perfect seashells to bring home to add to her collection. Those left to cherish her memory include her loving husband of 75 years, Billy Wilson Shinault; her son & daughter-in-law, Gary & Avis Shinault; her daughter & special son-in-law, Richard Lawson; her sister, Bertie Beck; ten grandchildren; twenty-three great-grandchildren, with one more on the way; & two great-great-grandchildren. In addition to her parents, Celia was preceded in death by three daugthters, Kathy Sue Shinault, Betty Brown & Jo Ann Rogers; one granddaughter, Kathy Ellen Rogers & five siblings, Ruby Wall, Dorothy Wall, Hester Wall Bruner, Tom Cummings, J. W. Wall & Gladys Wall O'Neal. A funeral service for Mrs. Shinault will be held at 12:00pm on Thursday, September 7, 2023 at Pine Hill Friends Meeting in Ararat. Burial will follow the service at the church cemetery. A visitation with the family will be held from 11:00am until the time of the service at the church. Sammy Cummings & Randy Beck will be officiating. Flowers will be accepted for the service, or donations may be made in her memory to Mountain Valley Hospice. Wendell Wilson Hiatt, 81 of Ararat, passed away on Wednesday, April 27, 2022 at his residence. Mr. Hiatt was born in Carroll County, VA to the late Carnie and Cassie Ayers Hiatt. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his son, David Hiatt; brothers, Albert (Benny) Hiatt, Clifford Hiatt, and Lonnie Gray Hiatt; and sisters, Eva Joy Robertson and Ruby Mae Hunter. Wendell was a great family man. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He also had many wonderful friends. Wendell was a great poker player and loved to gamble. He will be missed very much by his family and friends. Survivors include his wife Dorothy Hiatt of the home; daughters, Karen Crotts (Ronnie) of Elkin, NC, Lisa Lawrence (Freddie) of New York, and Linda Collins (Jimmy) of New Jersey; sons, Marty Hiatt (Liza) of Ararat, Michael Hiatt (Tiffany) of Ararat, Stacy Lucas of New Castle, VA, David Martin (Gail) of Narrows, Brian Martin (Teresa) of Ararat; sisters, Dorothy Wall, Marcia Ayers (Bobby), and Nina Newman all of Cana; brother, Roy Lee Hiatt (Pat); several grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; and beloved dog, Penny. A private graveside service with burial will be held at the Hiatt Family Cemetery at a later date with Rev. Timothy Crotts officiating. The family will receive friends at Vaughan-Guynn-McGrady Chapel on Sunday, May 1, 2022 from 6:00 until 8:00 PM. Obituary Master Sergeant Joyce M. Thorn (US Air Force, Retired), of Ararat Twp., passed away on Saturday June 19th at Barnes Kasson Hospital, Susquehanna.Born on January 13, 1944 in Susquehanna, she was the daughter of the late William J. and Florence Avery Thorn. Following her graduation from Susquehanna Community High School, Joyce began her military career with the United States Air Force. During her tour, she served in England, Alaska, The Azores Islands, Texas, Nebraska, California, and several other stations. Joyce was extremely proud of her service to her country. Following her retirement from the Air Force, Joyce commenced on a new path; she studied accounting at Baylor University, and upon graduation, followed up with obtaining her CPA license. She returned to Pennsylvania and began her second career with the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. Joyce was a woman of great faith. She was a member of the United Methodist Church, and became a lay speaker and spoke at several of the area Methodist churches, as well as at the Wesley Villages.Surviving are her brother: Emery Thorn as well as multiple nieces and nephews.In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her siblings: Harry, Howard, and George Thorn; Emily Harjers; Joan Drumm; Roslyn Lee; and Dorothy and Judith Thorn.The funeral will be Wednesday, June 23rd with services at 10 am in the Jones & Brennan Funeral Home, 430 Main Street, Forest City. Interment with military honors, Ararat Cemetery.
