Melissa Ann Trivett, known as Melissa to her friends and family, passed away on November 28, 2023, at the age of 44, in Salem, Virginia. Born on September 1, 1979, in New Jersey, she brought joy and light into the lives of all who knew her. Her warm smile and generous spirit will be deeply missed. Melissa's journey through life was marked by her love for her children. She was a mother to her son, Robert Lewis Hylton (Conner Cox) of Shawsville, VA, and her daughter, Faith Whittaker (Cordell McGuff) of Radford, VA. Melissa also shared a special bond with her siblings, Daniel Trivett Jr (Robin), Shannon Trivett (Ken Sr), and Memory Jean Strolh. She was preceded in death by her parents, who instilled in her the values of kindness and compassion that she carried with her throughout her life. Melissa was a lifelong learner, having earned an Associates Degree that furthered her career and personal growth. Her intellectual curiosity was by her creativity, which she expressed through her passion for photography. Melissa had an extraordinary talent for capturing the beauty of the world around her, and her photographs often reflected the beauty she found in the simplest of scenes. An ardent lover of animals, Melissa found joy in the company of all creatures great and small. Her kindness knew no bounds, and it extended to every living being she encountered. Her affinity for nature was evident in her love for nature walks, where she found peace and solace in the tranquility of the great outdoors. Melissa's life was a testament to the power of positivity and the impact one person can have on the world around them. She approached every day with a sense of wonder and gratitude, and her legacy is one of love, laughter, and the pursuit of happiness. As we say goodbye to Melissa, we celebrate the life she lived and the memories she leaves behind. Emily Ware Shenal, 76, of Salem, Va. , passed away on Monday, November 27, 2023. She cared for so many as a registered nurse and especially as the loving wife, mother, and grandmother she was. She had a deep appreciation for music and art, and expressed much of her talent by way of piano and watercolor. She loved fun, had a great sense of humor, and will perhaps be best known for being a "parrothead". Preceding her in death was her mother, Mildred Ware; father, James Ware; brother, Jim Ware; and husband of 50 years, Johnny V. "John" Shenal. Her surviving family includes her children, Brian Shenal and wife, Cathy, and Kelly Grigg and husband, Brad; and grandchildren, Ben Shenal, Bradley Grigg, Jonathan Shenal, and Lexi Grigg. The family expresses appreciation to the Brandon Oaks community for being a part of her life. All are invited to celebrate Emily's life at the John M. Oakey & Son Chapel in Salem, Va. , on Friday, December 1, 2023, beginning with visitation at 10 a. m. followed by a funeral service at 11:30 a. m. Teresa Carole Moser Street, 81, of Salem, Virginia, passed away on Monday, November 20, 2023. She was a native of Hickory, North Carolina and spent the last thirty-five years of her life with her husband, Dick, in Salem. Teresa was a graduate of Hickory High School and Concordia Teachers College in River Forest, Illinois. As a young adult she worked as an elementary school teacher. Teresa was active in Christ Lutheran Church for many years and greatly cherished her church family. Her love and dedication to her husband was on special display for the last 14 years of her life as his health declined and she became his caregiver. Teresa is survived by her husband of 55 years, Richard J. Street, Jr. ; sister, Eve Moser Jones (Charles); brother, Rick Moser; nieces and nephews, Lindsay Jones Webster (Jesse) of Raleigh, N. C. , Chuck Jones (Suzanne) of Wake Forest, N. C. , Rick Moser II (Monica) of Hickory, N. C. , and Gid Moser of Lincolnton, N. C. ; and seven great-nieces and great-nephews. She is predeceased by her parents, Marshall Brooks Moser and Katie Honeycutt Moser, and sister-in-law, Cindy Moser. A funeral service will be held at 1 p. m. on Tuesday, November 28, 2023, at Christ Lutheran Church in Roanoke. The graveside service will take place at 1 p. m. on Thursday, November 30, 2023, in Catawba Memorial Park in Hickory, N. C. Norma Jeane West Brown Kenney, 88, of Salem, VA passed away on November 16, 2023. She was born on July 19, 1935, to the late Harold and Maryann Claudine Edwards. She was preceded in death by her two sons, William Melvin Brown Jr. , and Leonard Andrew Kenney: two brothers, James West, and John W. Coles Jr. , better known as, "Billy West". She leaves three daughters, Vera, Rose Brown, and Beverly Kenney-Divers (Tim) to cherish her memory. Affectionately called "GG" or simply G by her grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren. She will truly be missed by all. A visitation will be held from 3-6 p. m. on Friday, December 1, 2023, at the John M. Oakey & Son Funeral Home in Salem. The interment will be held at 12 p. m. on Saturday, December 2, 2023, at Sherwood Memorial Park in Salem. Judith Catharine Smith Burton of Salem, Virginia, joined her beloved husband and son in heaven on Friday, November 17, 2023. Judy was a graduate of Graham High School (Bluefield, VA) and the Lewis Gale School of Nursing. She was a loving and devoted wife, mother, and Nana. Judy was a member of First United Methodist Church. She loved helping others. Judy was predeceased by her husband of over 52 years, Robert Lee Burton; son, Andrew Stephen Burton, as well as, her parents, Maurice Edward and Pauline Farmer Smith and her oldest brother, Maurice Warner Smith. Left to cherish and remember Judy are her three grandchildren, Matthew Scott, Rebecca Erin and Maigen Grace Burton; daughter-in-law, Melanie Lynne Burton; sisters, Barbara Smith Nash and Sandra Smith Kidd (Garland); brother, Frankie G. Smith (Frances), and many nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted on Wednesday, November 22, 2023, at 11:00 a. m. at First United Methodist Church in Salem, Va. , with Rev. Juanita Lura Conner Semones, of Roanoke, Va. , passed away on Saturday, November 18, 2023, at the age of 95. She was born in Floyd County on January 27, 1928. She spoke often of growing up in Floyd and working on the farm with her siblings. She loved working outside in her flower beds. She was a member of the LOA - Diners Club in Roanoke, Va. Juanita attended Little Hope Primitive Baptist Church all her life. Juanita was preceded in death by her father, Joseph Otey Conner; mother, Mary Sowers Conner; sister, Dorothy Craighead Holley; and her brother, W. T. Conner. She is survived by her son, Mike Semones (Susan); daughter, Melody Riffey (Larry); grandson, Sam Williams (Jennifer) of Rock Hill, S. C. ; great-grandchildren, Matthew and Gabrielle Williams of Hickory, N. C. ; sisters, Ortha Gay Hundley and Opaldeen Conner (Don); and brother, Junior Conner (Nancy). Kevin Dean Gordon, 53, of Salem, Virginia, went to be with the Lord on Friday, November 17, 2023. Born in Roanoke, Va. , on May 22, 1970, to the late Dallas Lee Gordon and Patty Cannaday Gordon, he is also preceded in death by his good friend, Jeff Huddleston. Kevin was never one to sit still; he was always tinkering around the house and fixing things. His garage was his man-cave, where he shared good times with friend and family and solved all the world's problems. Kevin was a known grillmaster and loved hosting cookouts for friends and family. His yard was immaculate, as was his lawnmower, and he took great pride in mowing the perfect lawn stripes. Leaves changing color means one thing - FOOTBALL - and Kevin was a die-hard Steelers fan! Always a Spartan, he loved Friday nights under the lights watching Salem High School football games. Above all, he adored his family, especially his precious grandbabies. Those left to cherish his memory are his mother, Patty Cannaday Gordon; wife, Julie Ashman; sons, Zack (Grace) Gordon and Hunter Gordon; step-sons, David Ashman and Christian Adkins; grandchildren, Kolbie and Kalani Gordon; brothers, Randy (Laurie) Gordon and Derek (Sheila) Gordon; nieces, Maria Gordon and Jessica Simmons; nephew, Josh Simmons, as well as many great friends.
