Richard Fritter

Richard Fritter

Age - 58

November 8, 2023

Richard Allen Fritter, Rick was born on February 28. 1965 at Camp Lejeune Naval Hospital aboard Camp Lejeune MCB, NC. to William C. Fritter, Sr. and Harriet Vernell Fritter. Surviving Rick are his wife of 39 years, Lorraine and their children, Ryan Andrew (Jessica) of Delaware, Ohio, Jacob Kyle (Rachel) of Jacksonville, NC and Ashleigh Nicole (Michael) of Jacksonville, NC. Rounding out the Fritter team, Rick cherished his role as Opa to Emma Grace, Owen Rhys, Madeline Ann and Calvin Thomas. To understand the Fritters you must also understand their immense need for healthy competition. Therefore, it is no surprise that two more will be joining the roster, Henry Allen and Ricki Marie will be added to the lineup in the spring of 2024. In addition he is survived by his parents Bill and Harriet Fritter of Jacksonville, his siblings, William Charles Fritter, Jr. (Sherry) of Jacksonville, Steven (Eyvonne) of Hubert, Christine (Donald) of Jacksonville, Debra (Mark) of Jacksonville, Ronald, Sr. of Jacksonville, Theresa (Scott, Sr. ) of Jacksonville and many nieces and nephews. Rick graduated White Oak High School in 1983 and later that fall enlisted in the United States Air Force and served his country faithfully for 23 years. Rick married the love of his life and high school sweetheart, Lorraine Blake in October of 1984. Together with their three children in tow, they traveled the world from snowy North Dakota to the beautiful island of Guam. Their most cherished assignment was Ramstein Air Base, Germany. This assignment was their favorite as they made many friends that are loved as family to this day. Next up was the last stop at Vance AFB, Oklahoma to finish out his distinguished career. Recently one of his airmen from Vance reached out and summed Rick's leadership style perfectly. "Most people on their retirement tour just go through the motions, not caring and just doing their time. Not MSgt Fritter, he was a leader to the end and always course corrected his airmen with firmness and kindness. He had a knack for making you feel like you were the only person in the room when he was speaking with you. It didn't matter how big or small the issue was, he was all in and ready to help us make it happen. " Rick was a coach at heart, and not just a coach for athletics but also a coach for life. He truly believed that if you humble yourself to talk to someone rather than talk at someone, you would yield results and help make a difference. Rick always had homework for his athletes. Most always, they thought that was silly, but he was a student of the game, every game and he wanted them to understand all the facets of the game they were playing. He was always teaching, even if others did not realize it was happening. He truly believed that when you give your best there is not anything you are not able to accomplish. Attitude and Effort were things he valued most in his players. He applied this logic in every facet of his life, from being a son, a husband, a father, a USAF senior NCO, JCMC's compliance officer, but most of all coaching young athletes at his beloved White Oak High School. He believed that if we took the time to invest in our young people it would make a difference. He used to say, "If I can reach just ONE, that's enough. It will trickle down and next time there will be two, and so on. " Rick was a quiet man until it came to his sports, particularly his WOHS Vikings, Carolina Tarheels, Atlanta Braves and last but not least his Miami Dolphins. If he was not attending a game, he could be seen assuming his "coaching stance" in front of the TV giving his coaching perspective as he paced back and forth. Lorraine would often say to him as he was yelling at the screen, "you know they can't hear you right?" This would produce that slight grin on his face and the coaching would continue. Rick always shared quotes, but the one that he will be remembered for the most is "Make It Happen!" He truly lived that in everything he did during his short 58 years on this earth. As a family, we are devastated that our Coach is no longer yelling at the TV or on the many fields at White Oak, but we take comfort in knowing that everywhere we look we see the footprints he left not only on the fields, but also on the hearts of those who he touched. Rest well Coach, you truly "Made It Happen!" Services: Wake Nov 15th from 6-8 pm at Jones Funeral Home, Chaney Ave Graveside Services Nov 16th, noon at Coastal Veterans Cemetery, Jacksonville Celebration of Life at the DEWplex facility following the graveside service at 116 Springhill Road, Maysville, NC 28555 (this will be a casual time with food and fellowship)Show more
