Charles peacefully passed away on November 8, 2023, at Alpine Village in Verdigre. Charles L. Nelson was born on July 13, 1948, in Orchard, Nebraska to Walter D. and Alice (Vonasek) Nelson. Having graduated from Verdigre High School, Charles cherished the memories and friendships formed during his educational journey. He was a man of strong character and unwavering dedication to his family and friends. Charles dedicated his life to farming west of Verdigre, where he found solace and fulfillment in working his cattle and land. In 2005, he retired from farming and moved to Verdigre. Charles then worked at Sonder Well Company for a few years. In June 2023, he moved to Alpine Village where he enjoyed the companionship and care he received. He enjoyed spending his leisure time fishing at Fort Randall Dam alongside his brother Woodrow. Charles also found joy in working in the shop, tending to his garden, and embarking on scenic drives in the countryside. He leaves behind his brother, Arlie (Vicky) Nelson; along with numerous relatives and friends who will forever cherish his memory. Charles was preceded in death by his parents; as well as his beloved brother, Woodrow Nelson. Memorial services for Donald Miller, age 90, and Sharon Miller, age 87, of Verdigre, Nebraska will be 3:00 p. m. Sunday, July 9, 2023, at United Methodist Church in Verdigre. Delores Ruzicka will officiate. Brockhaus Funeral Home in Verdigre is in charge of arrangements. Donald died Wednesday, December 2, 2020, at Avera Creighton Hospital in Creighton. Sharon died Tuesday, July 4, 2023, at Alpine Village in Verdigre. Donald L. Miller, son of Irven and Lillie (Hines) Miller, was born on June 6, 1930, in Walnut, Nebraska. He attended District 18 and 63 schools and graduated from Verdigre High School. He served in the United States Army from March 12, 1953, to March 10, 1955, when he was honorably discharged. Don married Sharon L. Vonasek on May 22, 1955, at Venus Lutheran Church. They were blessed with two children, Timothy Irven and Pamela Martha. They farmed in the Walnut and Verdigre areas for eleven years until moving to Verdigre. Sharon L. Miller, daughter of Walter and Martha (Prokop) Miller, was born July 2, 1936, at Verdigre, Nebraska. She attended Cottonwood Row grade school, Verdigre, High School, and Wayne State College. Don worked for the Village of Verdigre for many years until his retirement. Sharon lived in the Verdigre area all of her life. She was a member of the Verdigre Organized Women and Verdigre Booster Club. Don and Sharon enjoyed spending time with their grandchildren and family throughout the years. They both volunteered at the Carousel in Verdigre for many years. They are survived by their children, Timothy Miller of Norfolk and Pamela (Merle) Eichstadt of Huron, South Dakota; three grandchildren, Lisa (Chris) White, Colton (Marissa) Miller, and Jordan Hopper; great-grandson, DaShaun Woody; Don's sister, Marcella Forejt; Don's brother and sister-in-law, Virgil and Ellen Miller; and many nieces and nephews. They were preceded in death by their parents, Irven and Lillie Miller and Walter and Martha Vonasek; Sharon's sister and brother-in-law, Marion and Raymond Zerbe; Don's infant brother, Dwayne; Don's brother-in-law, Joe Forejt; and nephews, Tom and Gary Zerbe. Reverend Ryan Janke will officiate, with burial in Riverside Cemetery in Verdigre. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service. Brockhaus Funeral Home in Verdigre is in charge of arrangements. Mary Ann died Friday, March 17, 2023, at Alpine Village in Verdigre. Mary Ann (Herbert) Horstmann, daughter of Louis and Anna (Mastalir) Herbert, was born January 2, 1935, at Verdigre, Nebraska. She attended Jelen School District 27 near Verdigre and graduated from Verdigre High School. On May 23, 1954, Mary Ann was united in marriage to Willard Horstmann at Bethlehem Lutheran Church at Verdigre. They were blessed with three children, Rick, Bruce, and Kathy. Mary Ann lived in Washington for a time before returning to reside in Verdigre. She worked at the Farmers Union Store, Creighton Hospital, Alpine Village, and at Waldbaum's in Bloomfield. She was a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Verdigre. Mary Ann is survived by her sons, Rick (Theresa) Horstmann of Verdigre, NE and Bruce (Teresa) Horstmann of Orchard, NE; son-in-law, Joe Macke of Manley, NE; eight grandchildren; sixteen great-grandchildren; brother, Marvin Herbert of Verdigre; and sister-in-law, Leona Briggs. She was preceded in death by her parents, Louis and Anna Herbert; husband, Willard in 2011; daughter, Kathy Macke in 2021; and sister, Betty Lou Herbert. Reverend Jeremy Hans will be celebrant, with burial in St. Wenceslaus Catholic Cemetery. Visitation will be Wednesday from 4:00 to 7:00 p. m. at the church, with a Wake Service at 7:00 p. m. Brockhaus Funeral Home in Verdigre is in charge of arrangements. Bernadette died Friday, February 3, 2023, at Alpine Village in Verdigre. Bernadette Dvorak, daughter of Otto and Mary (Tharnish) Balleweg, was born March 15, 1927, at Creighton, Nebraska. She attended St. Ludger Academy in Creighton. After graduation, Bernadette worked for Bell Telephone in Creighton, Nebraska, Reno, Nevada, and Omaha, Nebraska. On September 12, 1949, Bernadette was united in marriage to Robert Dvorak at St. Ludger Catholic Church in Creighton. They were blessed with ten children: Linda, Richard, Rita, Terry, Loretta, Max, Joe, Dale, Connie, and Jane. Bernadette was a member of St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Verdigre, Catholic Daughters of America, Altar Society, and the Sparta Sisters Club. Bernadette is survived by her children, Linda (Charles) Trent of St. Charles, Missouri, Richard Dvorak of Scribner, Nebraska, Rita (Dave) Wickett of Verdigre, Nebraska, Terry (Deb) Dvorak of Omaha, Nebraska, Lori (Joedy) Sandhoefner of Fort Calhoun, Nebraska, Max (Susan) Dvorak of Center, Nebraska, Joe Dvorak of Pierce, Colorado, Dale (Julie) Dvorak of Verdigre, Nebraska, Connie (Ron) Svendsen of Papillion, Nebraska, and Jane Lynn of Indianapolis, Indiana; 20 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandsons; many step-grandchildren, step-great-grandchildren, and step-great-great-grandchildren; brother, Francis (Darlene) Balleweg of Sparks, Nevada; and many nieces, nephews, and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; brother, Eugene "Gene" Balleweg; sister, Loretta Hutchinson; grandson, Robert Trent; son-in-law, Jeff Lynn; and daughter-in-law, Alysia Dvorak.
