Judy was preceded in death by her parents, George Gerald Smith and Martha Wallace Smith, and sister, Alice Ann Smith. Judy was born to Martha Wallace Smith and George Gerald Smith exactly 4 minutes after midnight on January 1, 1942. Judy had a lifetime source of pride to have been the first baby born in Greenville County that year. Judy's childhood centered around the textile industry and she spent time growing up in Greenville and Great Falls, SC. After finishing high school in Great Falls, Judy returned to Greenville and earned her certification as a Registered Nurse at the Greenville General Hospital School of Nursing. After completing nursing school, Judy and a few of her nursing school friends moved to Durham, NC to work for the Duke University hospital system. Judy made lifelong friends at nursing school and cherished the memories of the young ladies growing up and venturing out into the world together. While in Durham, at the suggestion of family members, Judy connected with a family friend from Great Falls. That connection was with Bright Lowry who became her devoted husband and partner for the next 58 years. Bright and Judy married only 8 months after reconnecting and enjoyed a wonderful life of adventures together. Judy and Bright had two daughters that were a source of pride. They spent countless hours watching volleyball, music performances, and simply enjoying time together. Summer times were highlighted with a week at the beach with close friends that felt more like family. She was thrilled to become a grandmother and loved her two grandsons beyond measure. As her nursing career grew, she completed her Bachelor of Nursing degree and then her Masters in Nursing administration. Judy excelled during her graduate work at Clemson University, so much so that the Clemson University College of Nursing instituted the Judith S. Lowry Award for Outstanding Graduate Research Assistant, of which Judy was the first recipient. After completing her Masters Degree she was a Director of Nursing at AnMed Medical Center in Anderson, SC. Judy had a lifelong passion and talent for music. She was the choir director and organist at Old Greenville Presbyterian Church for over 20 years. Her music was enjoyed by countless congregations and her patience with teaching music was appreciated by the members of her numerous children's choirs. After retirement, Judy's love for music transitioned into a passion for ballroom dancing. Judy and Bright took lessons for over 10 years and enjoyed showing off their dance moves whenever possible. One of the highlights of their ballroom dancing experience was the formation of the Ballroom Dance Club at Erskine College. Every Sunday afternoon Judy and Bright would teach ballroom dancing to the club members. Retirement also allowed Judy and Bright to pursue their wanderlust and travel the world. A desire to see many places, but to "stay in one place", fits perfectly with cruising. Judy and Bright became loyal sailors with Holland America Cruise Lines and spent over 200 nights on Holland America ships. Their sailing adventures took them to six continents and numerous different countries. One of the benefits of cruising was they had ample opportunity to show off their ballroom dancing prowess to the music of the on-board bands. Judy would beam with pride when she described their dancing and they even won at least one ship-wide talent contest. A highlight of their cruising experiences was a family cruise of the Baltic they were able to take with the Brock family. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, November 28, 2023 from 11:00 a. m. until 11:45 a. m. at Thomas McAfee Funeral Home, Downtown, 639 N. Main St. , Greenville, SC 29601. The funeral service will begin at 12:00 p. m. in the Downtown Chapel. A private family reception will take place immediately following the funeral service. A public graveside service and burial will begin at 3:00 p. m. in the Old Greenville Presbyterian Church Cemetery in Donalds, SC.
