Flonnie Toll

Age - 94

Flonnie Mae Toll, 94, of South Bend, passed away peacefully on Sunday December 3, 2023 at Wellbrooke of South Bend. She was born on January 27, 1929, in Muncie, IN, to the late Sidney and Minnie (Looper) Beaty. On July 28, 1951, as Flonnie Beaty, she married Gaylord Toll, who preceded her in death. She is survived by her daughters, Rebecca (Terry) Holzwart and Barbara (Dr. Stephen) Zucker, both of South Bend; her sons, Thomas (Kay) Toll of LaPorte, IN, and Ronald Toll of Carmel, IN; seven grandchildren: Landon (Kristina) Toll and Trevor (Emilie) Toll, both of Carmel, IN, and Whitney (Evan) Snyder, of Indianapolis, Caleb Holzwart of Bremen, IN, Maegan (Douglas) Hawkins of LaPorte, IN, Tyler Toll of Miami, FL and Gretchen Summe of South Bend; eight great-grandchildren: Brenden Stodden, Lia and Kendal Summe, Jadyn and Laila Holzwart and Arlo, Millie and Hedger Snyder, and by two sisters; Ruth Buschor of Muncie, IN and Rebecca (Carter) Sims of Lafayette, IN. Mrs. Toll was a 1947 graduate of Muncie Central High School, a member of the Northwest United Methodist Church, South Bend and a Past President of the United Methodist Women's Group in Garrett, IN. She was a member of the choir at both churches. Flonnie was a warm and loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was known as a great cook and baker and a meticulous housekeeper. Flonnie also had artistic skills and enjoyed working in oils, pencil and ceramics. Visitation will be from noon until 1 p. m. with a service to follow at 1:00 p. m. Friday, December 8, 2023 at the Kaniewski Funeral Home, 3545 N. Bendix Dr. , South Bend. Burial will at a later date at Union Cemetery, Eaton, IN. Joan Ivanof

Age - 84

Joan Rita Ivanof, age 84, passed away peacefully on Friday, December 1, 2023, at the Center for Hospice Care in Mishawaka, IN, following a long journey of Parkinson's and more recently breast cancer. She was born March 23, 1939, in South Bend, IN to Zenon John and Florence Magdalene Widawski. She was a 1957 graduate of St. Joseph High School. She married Boris George Ivanof on July 14, 1962 at St Adalbert's Catholic Church in South Bend, IN. She worked right out of high school for a short time at Associates, assisted for a brisk time with the Head Start Program in Lydick, IN, worked alongside her husband maintaining soccer fields for Michiana Soccer Association, and later in life worked at Walmart as a Pharmacy Technician for a brief time. Her primary focus was raising and taking care of her family. Joan met her husband, when he delivered a Christmas tree to her home in 1961. After their wedding in 1962, they moved to Westbury, NY and had their first child. Shortly after this, they moved back to South Bend, IN and had two more children. She is survived by her daughters, Susan Colleen Ivanof and her partner Rob Haney of South Bend, IN, Sonja Maria Ivanof of Wyoming, MN, Noreen Rose Buczek and husband Michael Joseph Buczek of South Bend, IN; grandchildren, Kyle Christopher Stahl and Tyler Anthony Lynch. Joan loved BINGO and had every color imaginable for daubers along with unique lucky charms. . . " trolls" were the best. She would help you out if you needed it while watching her many packets at the same time. She enjoyed baking and was known for her famous homemade Keflies during Christmas. During Fat Tuesday, she would make true Polish Paczki - raspberry was the best. Some other favorites for family and friends were; chicken paprika, beef stroganoff, meatloaf, potato salad and pulled beef. When she wasn't baking or cooking, she crocheted and sewed with passion and love. Joan was also a parishioner at Sacred Heart Parish and was part of the choir for years along with singing during the Midnight Masses at the Basilica of Notre Dame, IN. Joan would use her singing voice to cheer on the Indianapolis Colts during football season and then take part in fun euchre cards games with family and friends while having a never-ending game of Uno with her grandson Kyle. Joan was also a former Town Board Member of Indian Village, South Bend, IN. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 9:30 am on Wednesday, December 6, 2023 at The Basilica of The Sacred Heart, Notre Dame, IN. Burial will follow in St. Joseph Valley Memorial Park, 375 Cleveland Road, Granger, IN 46530. The family will receive friends on Tuesday, December 5, 2023 from 4:00 pm until 8:00 pm at the Kaniewski Funeral Home, 3545 N Bendix Drive, South Bend, IN 46628. A rosary will be prayed at 7:45 pm. Cynthia (Cindy) Ann Bolinger (Vermillion), 92 years old, passed away peacefully in her sleep in her room at The Pointe Assisted Living facility in New Carlisle IN on Friday Nov 17th, 2023, from natural causes. Cindy was born on December 6th, 1930, in Laporte Indiana to Wayne and Ruth Morehouse. Cindy was a lifelong resident of New Carlisle. On Dec 6th, 1947, she married Jack Vermillion. She married Richard Bolinger in the summer of 1967. Cindy is survived by her 8 children, Connie (Kazia) Macey of Macon MO, Daniel Vermillion of New Carlisle IN, Diane (Alfred) Taylor of Shelbyville IN, Randy (Donna) Vermillion of Fish Lake IN, Annette (Mike) Costello of Melbourne FL, Lori (Mike) Migliore of Melbourne FL, Kimberly (Liz) Potter-Vermillion of Topeka KS, and Traci Reichert (Dean) of Everett WA. Cindy was preceded in death by her first husband Jack Vermillion, her second husband Richard Bolinger, her brother Ralph Morehouse, her sister Emma Sullivan, her daughter-in-law Theresa Vermillion, and her grandson Blake Kirkham. Cindy is also survived by numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Cindy was an employee of Laporte Hospital, Easy Heat Inc, New Prairie School Corporation and numerous odd jobs throughout the years. She enjoyed embroidery, bowling, her pets (dogs, cats, and birds), creative cooking, dancing (primarily the jitterbug), playing cards, watching old musicals, roller skating, local auto racing, traveling, and most importantly, spending time with her family. The hobby Cindy most enjoyed was embroidery where her stitches were meticulous. Her family lived very humble lives with regards to income and mending clothing for her children was a tireless job. She also quilted old prom dresses and designed them into blankets for newborn babies around town. However, her greatest joy was to be surrounded by her family. Her love was such that she raised a family who continues to be very close. Cindy had a giving heart and sacrificed constantly for her family and friends in the community from the beginning to the end of her 92 years. She loved her family and was a great mother who went without to provide for her children and while she was not a disciplinarian she held high expectations (even if she broke a few rules herself) for her children and grandchildren. She was insistent that she be kept in the loop on everything happening in her family's lives even after she became immobile and unable to leave her home at The Pointe. The family of Cindy would like to express gratitude to the good people employed at The Pointe for taking such amazing care of her over the years. All the siblings, grandchildren and great-grandchildren would also like to thank her son Randy Vermillion and his wife Donna for being Cindy's foremost caretaker in her later years. Ann Donohue-Griggs

Bold, brilliant & beautiful, Ann Teresa Donohue-Griggs entered into eternal life joining her husband Gladden on November 17th, reuniting the soulmates who married on September 3rd 1988. To say that she lived courageously would be an understatement. Known to her family, friends, and many perfect strangers as one of the most intrepid advocates, she sprinted through life upward bound in pursuit of all that is good. A pride of the South Side of South Bend, she was born to Martha Ann and Thomas in 1960 at St. Joseph Hospital. Raised on Dayton Street with her siblings Mary, Joseph, Claire, and Daniel, she attended Studebaker and was awarded many accolades including a Daughters of the American Revolution distinction. Overflowing with enthusiasm, curiosity, and determination to participate in and contribute to her community, she became the Wildcat - the school mascot - supporting athletics with fervent passion. Greatly skilled in her own right as a softball catcher and volleyball player, her enjoyment in sports both as a team member and coach maintained throughout her whole life. She was always adamant to provide opportunities to her and other children of Michiana at the O'Brien Center, YMCA, South Side Little League, and the local school teams. A steadfast proponent of education who believed that great scholarship can change the world, she studied psychology at Purdue University and received her undergraduate degree in three years. She continued advanced studies at Indiana University South Bend and earned a Master's degree in early childhood education. Following in the footsteps of her mother, she joined her at Memorial Hospital after completing the diploma nursing program. Serving as the bedrock of the family, she continued to work in support of her children and her husband, whom she sent back to school at the University of Notre Dame for an engineering degree, of which she was most proud. Gladden, Ann, and her brother Daniel would go on to start several businesses including Gribbits and Book Buddies. Upon Gladden's passing in November 2007, she bolstered her already voluminous love for and devotion to their children Gabriel, Nathaniel, and Olivia. Making no compromises, she sent her children to Saint Matthew Cathedral School - only blocks from her childhood home and which she herself had wanted to attend and was a parishioner - and became actively involved in numerous aspects including starting a chess club and being a cub scout leader. In these and various capacities, she sought to ensure equal chances to both girls and boys. Epitomizing her allegiance to civil rights and civic virtue, she often reminded Olivia that if her brothers can she could too. Dedicated to promoting welfare through the development of the mind through the arts in service of the highest good, she was overjoyed to continue her own education learning alongside her children as they attended Trinity School at Greenlawn and was constantly amazed by the plethora of opportunities offered. In the tradition of her mother, she instilled a deep appreciation for art, music, writing, languages, singing, reading, poetry, cinema, gardening and every flower of creative expression. Perhaps befitting of her namesake, all three would graduate from institutions of Our Lady - Saint Mary's College and the University of Notre Dame. Her affiliations deepened with their studies and works there in addition to her own work at the Holy Cross House for the Congregation with whom her eldest took final vows and was ordained a priest. His ministry as a campus rector evoked some of her fondest memories as a three-time participant in the Upward Bound program. Her enduring sense of service was unbounded, radiating to all she held dear and proliferating beyond her time and circumstance. Though widowed, she volunteered with the St. Vincent De Paul Society delivering groceries and the Friends of the Library bookstore finding second life for the St. Joseph County Library collections. As a nurse, she aided in administering the Daisy award and was always supportive in recognizing her fellow colleagues. Demonstrating tremendous moral resolve and revering the dignity of all and every life, she was nominated and honored to serve on the ethics committee. As a citizen of the world and the Lord, she displayed an abiding intercession to noble causes fueled by a faith only to be satisfied when everlasting in Heaven. Despite adversity, she never relinquished hope that we will and must do better through works of mercy kept alive in the rights and responsibilities of the body politic. May we be inspired by and aspire toward our lady Ann as we seek to achieve the highest potential. We shall never forget to remember that hard work will forever make a difference and that a rising soul lifts all those its spirit comes to know. She was born on April 12, 1960, in Weslaco, TX, to the late Antonio and Irma (Hernandez) Santellan.
