Florence Evelyn McKay, age 74, of Sanford, passed away on Monday, September 11, 2023 at Forsyth Medical Center in Winston Salem, North Carolina, surrounded by her family. Florence was born in Germany on March 14, 1949 to the late Leeroy Montgomery and Luise Pitz Montgomery. She is survived by her sons, David Robert McKay of Sanford and Jeffrey Jerome McKay of Lillington, sister, Kathy, brother, Steve, five grandchildren. William Richard Blackwell, 76, of Winston-Salem, peacefully passed away on December 8, 2023, surrounded by his loving family. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister-in-law, Corless Goode. Richard was born in Columbus County, North Carolina on October 4, 1947 to William Talmadge and Gladys Hammond Blackwell. He graduated from Gray High School in 1965 and received a Bachelor's Degree in Education from Western Carolina University in 1969, as well as a Master's Degree in Educational Administration from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro in 1972. At Western Carolina, Richard joined Pi Kappa Phi fraternity where he made friendships that lasted a lifetime. Richard met and fell in love with Lillie Patricia Goode in Cullowhee in 1966. They were married on March 22, 1970 in Ruth, North Carolina. The couple moved to Winston-Salem in 1970 to begin lifetime careers in elementary education. Richard's career began at Waughtown Elementary School and spanned over three decades until his retirement in 2000. Richard was an educator and administrator at Waughtown Elementary, Brown Middle, Speas Elementary, Kimberly Park Alternative Elementary, Sherwood Forest Elementary, and Clemmons Elementary. His work influenced the learning of thousands of children in the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County School System. Richard's career was spent improving educational outcomes for students, and empowering teachers and staff to inspire children towards a lifelong love of learning. Upon his retirement in 2000, Richard led a life focused on family, his church, volunteerism, and spending time with dear friends. Seeking purpose in his retirement, Richard threw himself into volunteering with Crisis Control Ministry and Meals on Wheels of Senior Services. Richard's favorite part of his heart were his four beloved grandchildren, two in Winston-Salem and two in Denver, Colorado. He enjoyed sharing vacations with family and friends from coast to coast, but particularly anywhere with long sandy beaches. Additionally, Richard enjoyed being a member of College Park Baptist Church for more than fifty years. Richard is survived by his loving wife Pat of 53 years and two sons, Chad Blackwell (Elizabeth) of Denver, Colorado and Drew Blackwell (Sarah) of Winston-Salem, and four grandchildren: Nate Blackwell, Maxine Blackwell, Caroline Blackwell, and James Blackwell. In addition, he leaves behind two brothers, Phil Blackwell (Tammie) and Terry Blackwell (Debbie), two brothers-in-law, Mike Goode and Buster Goode (Gwen), and numerous nieces and nephews. Richard was a helper, putting everyone else ahead of himself no matter if they were family, friends, or strangers. For those lucky enough to be close to Richard, hello and goodbye were not enough. Instead it was, "I love you. "A memorial service will be held 12:00 p. m. on Friday, December 15, 2023, at College Park Baptist, 1701 Polo Road. The family will receive family and friends after the service. A private interment will be held later that day. "Lil, the eldest daughter of seven (7) children was born February 2, 1934 in Davison County, N. C. to Russel and Blanche Thomas. Lil attended elementary schools in Midway, N. C, Lexington, N. C. , following Kimberely Park and Adkins High School in Winston Salem, N. C. She moved from Winston Salem, N. C. , to seek employment in Philadelphia, PA in 1955. She left at the age of 20 (twenty) years old and lived in Philadelphia for 12 years. It was in June 1967, she moved to Detroit, MI, and soon married Otis Ousley in 1975. Lil worked different jobs for a decade and landed a job at Ford Motor Company in 1977, where she worked as an Assembly Worker for 22 years and retired in December 1999. She loved to travel, spending time with UAW Members at picnics, loved attending church, and loved the Lord. While in Detroit, she was a member of New Providence Baptist Church, under the leadership of the late Rev. Solomon, where she was baptized. She was a member of New Providence for over 23 years and then moved her membership to the New Prospect Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of the late Rev. Dr. Wilma R. Johnson, where she served on the Circle of Sorrow and Hope Bereavement Board. After living in Detroit for over 40 years, retiring from Ford Motor Company, she returned home to Winston Salem, in 2007, being away for over 52 years. Lil purchased a home around the corner from her sister (Savannah), both attended church, and joined United Methodist Missionary Baptist Church (UMMBC), where she served on the Women's Missionary Board and a faithful member, loved by her church family. Lil was predeceased by her husband, Otis Ousley, mother and father (Russel and Blanche Thomas), and a host of other family members, Cynthia Thomas, Dejuan 'Peanut' Marshall, Charlie Frank Thomas, Savannah Thomas Jones, Henry Lewis Thomas and Bruce Lindsey. She leaves her precious and endearing memories to her beloved sister, Margie Thomas, other family members, Monike, Jade, Jalen, Arrington (Jamila), Iris (Patrick), Jane (Dennis), Denoris, Reginald, Voncille, Michael, Veniessa (Horace), Charlotte and Linda, and long list of great nieces, nephews, cousins and close friends. Robert Lee Pitts, Jr. passed away peacefully on December 2, 2023. He was born in Winston-Salem, North Carolina to Robert Pitts, Sr. and Sandra Pitts. He was a graduate of North Forsyth High School. He spent his whole life in Winston-Salem, where he left an indelible mark on those who knew him. Robert had a passion for fishing and enjoyed being out in nature. Robert loved being out on the pier watching the waves crash on the sand. Robert also enjoyed being "ampa" to his five grandchildren who he loved deeply. Robert dedicated many of years to UPS and the Winston-Salem Journal. Robert was a gentle giant that never met a stranger. He was a selfless man who would have given his last to others. As a devoted Christian, Robert's faith played a significant role in his life, providing him with strength and guidance throughout his journey. Robert is survived by his three children, Taylor (Brittany) Pitts, Addison (Morgan) Franks both of Winston-Salem, NC and Robert Braden (Mackenzie) Pitts of Virginia Beach, VA; three sisters, Juanita Pitts, Sabrina (Morris) Garrett both of Winston-Salem, NC and Kimberly (Sean) Stafford of Durham, NC; five grandchildren, Braxton Flores-Pitts, Kingston Pitts, Zaydin Franks, Laylani-Lynn Franks, and Emerick Pitts; and a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Funeral services will be held at 11:30am Saturday, December 9, 2023 at the Russell Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Dr. Kendall Jones, Sr. officiating.
