Born on October 6, 1952, on Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas, Bruce grew up in Martins Ferry, Ohio, alongside his three younger siblings. Bruce's journey in life was filled with dedication and service. After graduating from Martins Ferry High School, he immediately enlisted in the US Navy, where he served with honor from 1971 to 1977, spending several years on the USS Vesole and USS William V. Pratt, touring multiple continents along the way. During his time in Key West and Charleston, Bruce put his faith in Jesus encouraged by the testimony and influence of fellow sailors and a local ministry for servicemen. Upon his honorable discharge in Charleston, SC, Bruce found his way to Greenville, SC, where he met the love of his life, Sharon Kay Madson. They exchanged vows on July 28, 1979, and together they raised two sons, Aaron and Timothy. From his early years working as a machinist in tennis ball production at Wilson Sporting Goods until his later career as an Electronics Technician at Robert Bosch LLC in Anderson, Bruce constantly pursued knowledge and growth. While balancing work and family life, he enrolled at Greenville Technical College, earning two associate degrees in the fields of manufacturing and industrial electronics. His hard work and dedication culminated in receiving the esteemed Journeyman Electrician Certification - which was held up until his death. During the last 14 years, Bruce's resilient spirit lead him to the Center of Developmental Services (CDS) on Academy Street in Greenville, where he found fulfillment with staff and families. For a portion of that time, he proudly worked alongside his two sons, former CDS employees. His positive outlook, exceptional skills, and genuine compassion endeared him to colleagues, children and their families. Everyone at CDS affectionately nicknamed "Bruce Wayne" Higgs their "Batman" for his playful nature and the joy he brought to their lives. Beyond his professional pursuits, Bruce's faith in Jesus guided every aspect of his existence. He consistently sought opportunities to spread the Good News, serving in various ministries throughout his life. Alongside his wife Sharon, they served in multiple capacities: Awana, Bible Quiz Leader, Deacon, Men for Missions and most recently Bayberry Retirement Community. For fourteen years, they visited the residents, sharing love, support, and the message of God's forgiveness. Bruce's commitment extended to his churches, previously, Hampton Park Baptist Church and currently, Community Baptist Church in Greer. Bruce's enjoyment for craftsmanship and creativity was reflected in his woodworking skills. Recently, he began crafting personalized banks from wood and antique mailbox doors, showing his signature blend of classic charm and whimsical appeal. As a personal hobby, he transformed ordinary Matchbox cars into intricately detailed fire trucks and automobiles. His love for fire trucks was a constant memorial to his father, who was a lifetime firefighter in Martins Ferry. Bruce's influence and impact were far-reaching, leaving an indelible mark on all who had the privilege of knowing him. His legacy will be remembered not only through his family but also through the lives he touched and the faith he shared. In addition to his wife Sharon, Bruce is survived by two sons, Timothy Higgs and his wife Janelle, and Aaron Higgs and his wife Leslie; five grandchildren, Eva, Elliott, Mary-Wynne, Cora and one on the way; and two sisters, Debbie (Mike) Luermann and Linda (Todd) Yourko along with each of their children.
