Bristol, VA – Evelyn C. DeBord Kelly, age 90, passed on Friday, October 6, 2023, at her home. Evelyn was born in Saltville, VA and was a graduate of R. B. Worthy High School. After moving to Bristol as a young adult, she became a member of Fellowship Chapel where she was a devoted Sunday School Teacher and loved the Dorcas Circle and Sunday School Class. She was preceded in death by her parents, James M. DeBord, Sr. and Louise Olinger DeBord; and brothers, Bonner, Moses, and Herschel DeBord. She is survived by her husband, George N. Kelly; sons, Michael Kelly and wife Billie of Pickerington, OH, Richard Kelly and wife Janice of Bristol, VA, James Kelly and wife Karen of Charlottesville, VA; grandchildren who she loved dearly, Zac, Heather, Amanda, Madison, Ryan, Lauren, and Josh; sister-in-law, Linda DeBord; and several nieces and nephews. Visitation with the family will be held 2-3 p. m. Monday, October 9, 2023, in the Main Street Location of Farris Funeral Service. Funeral services will be conducted at 3:00 p. m. with Pastor Scott Price officiating. Interment will follow in Forest Hills Memory Gardens with Tim Kelly, Travis Kelly, Matt Kelly, Mackey DeBord, Zac Kelly, Josh Kelly, and Jerry Vencill serving as pallbearers. Born on December 15, 1931, Lawrence grew up in Virginia and always remained deeply connected to his home state. After completing his education, he embarked on a successful career as an auditor for the Commonwealth of Virginia. His meticulous attention to detail and strong work ethic made him a highly respected professional. Colleagues admired him for his integrity and commitment to excellence. Outside of work, Lawrence had a deep passion for biking. He found solace and joy on the scenic Virginia Creeper Trail, where he spent countless hours pedaling through nature's beauty. This activity allowed him to appreciate the wonders of the natural world and keep himself physically fit. Lawrence was also proud of his military service. He served in the United States Army and carried the discipline and values he acquired during that time throughout his life. His dedication to serving his country was an important part of his identity. In addition to excelling professionally and embracing outdoor adventures, Lawrence never forgot the value of education. He graduated from Virginia Tech with a Master's Degree in Education, exemplifying his thirst for knowledge and personal growth. His educational background not only enriched his own life but also allowed him to make a positive impact on the lives of others. Lawrence will forever be remembered as a loyal friend, a devoted family member, and an inspiration to those who had the privilege of knowing him. His generosity and kindness touched many lives, leaving behind lasting memories that will continue to bring comfort to those who loved him. A graveside service will be held at Knollkreg Memorial Park in Abingdon on November 30, 2023. The gathering will begin at 11:00 AM. Earnest Cecil Hart, age 98, passed away on November 28, 2023 at Commonwealth Senior Living in Abingdon, VA. Born on February 14, 1925, in the picturesque town of Whitetop, Virginia, Earnest's early years were shaped by the rural beauty and close-knit community of the area. He was imbued with a strong work ethic from a young age, evident in his decision to leave home at the tender age of 18 in pursuit of greater opportunities. Venturing to Washington D. C. , Earnest found employment at Rosslyn Steel. It was here that he honed his skills and developed a passion for the steel industry. After two years at Fabricators in Maryland, Earnest's determination and dedication led him to Bowie Steel Co. , where he would serve as a superintendent for an impressive 20 years. He retired in 1982, his exceptional leadership skills and unwavering commitment ensured the success and growth of the company. In 1990, Earnest made the decision to embark on a new chapter in his life by moving to Abingdon, Virginia. This vibrant town became his home, providing him with tranquility and serenity amidst its scenic landscapes. Within this tight-knit community, Earnest found solace and warmth as he built lasting friendships with neighbors who soon became an extension of his own family. Earnest and his wife, Ruby, were faithful members of Damascus Road Baptist Church. In addition to his exceptional work ethic and devotion to his family, Earnest served his country with pride and distinction. He dedicated a portion of his life to the United States Coast Guard, demonstrating his commitment to protecting and serving others. Earnest was preceded in death by his wife, Ruby Hart; his parents, Arthur and Laura Hart; three sisters, Maggie Wyatt, Edna Osborne, Parlie Hart and three brothers, Onnie Hart, Lee Hart and Charlie Hart. Survivors include one sister-in-law, Louise Fletcher from Port Clinton, OH and several nieces and nephews. A visitation will be held on November 30, 2023, from 6:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Damascus Road Baptist Church in Abingdon. Family and friends are invited to gather together in remembrance and support during this time of mourning. The funeral service honoring Earnest's memory will follow on November 30th at 7:00 PM at the same location, with Rev. John E. Massey, Jr. and Rev. Caleb Holman officiating. A burial service will take place on Friday, December 1, 2023, at 11:00 am at Forest Hills Memory Gardens, 19415 Lee Highway, Abingdon, VA with the Men of Damascus Road Baptist Church serving as pallbearers. Earnest Cecil Hart's passing leaves an immeasurable void in the lives of those who loved him most dearly. Dorothy (Lerum) Lee, age 93, passed on Saturday, November 18, 2023. Dorothy spent her first 28 years in the Canadian border town of Sweet Grass, Montana. She graduated with her class of four in May 1948. Dorothy married Loyd Ira Lee in October 1948. She was a secretary at the immigration Port of Entry at Sweet Grass until 1951. Her children Tom (deceased) and Dona were born in Shelby, MT, 36 miles south of the border. They moved when the Texaco Oil Refinery relocated to Anacortes, WA, in 1958. She graduated from Skagit Valley Community College in Mount Vernon, WA in 1962. The family moved to Tacoma so that she could earn her teaching degree at Pacific Lutheran University. Dorothy taught for six years in Tacoma while her husband worked at St. Regis Paper Co. They moved again to Spokane for two years where Tom graduated from high school. Dorothy taught grades four through seven, with 28 students, at a country school a mile and a half from the Spokane city limits. They moved to Hermiston, Oregon in 1970. Loyd worked at Boise Cascade Paper Co. in Wallula, WA, and Dorothy taught at West Park Elementary School for nine years, then at Thompson Hall for one year. She taught for nine years at Highland Hills Elementary, retiring in 1988 because of hearing loss. Dorothy was baptized by a Lutheran minister who preached once a month at the Methodist Church in Sweet Grass. She was confirmed in Sunburst, MT in 1943 (where her children were baptized in 1952 and 1955). She was active at Trinity Lutheran Church (ELCA) in Hermiston with quilting, was a bible study leader and taught vacation bible school. At Grace and Mercy Lutheran Church in Hermiston she was active with quilting and card ministry. She was a product of the depression and WWII, learning to recycle everything or do without. In that way, she was able to leave legacies at Thrivent, ELCA Disaster Relief, Guide Dog for the Blind, OPB and the Red Cross. No public services will be held.
