Evelyn Evans, 87, of Vanceboro, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Friday, September 8th, 2023. She passed away peacefully at her home. Funeral arrangements will be shared once finalized. Evelyn was born in Craven County on May 23, 1936. She was a devout Christian and attended Tabernacle Holiness Church, where she enjoyed fellowship and communion with her church family. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and friend. She enjoyed cooking and spending time with her family. She was known for her kindness and her gentle soul, always finding the best in people. She prayed faithfully for anyone and everyone. To know her was to love her. She is preceded in death by her mother, Ethel Nobles; her father, Ervin Nobles; bestfriend, Jean Morris; and several special family members. She is survived by her husband of 69 years, Walter Evans; children: daughter, Kathy Griekspoor (Marty); son, Greg Evans (Heather); grandson, Chris Griekspoor (Alisha); granddaughter, Kimberly Mills (Daniel); and sisters: Margaret Nobles and Hilda Buckner. James Wesley Hale "Jimmy", 69, of New Bern and formerly of Vanceboro, NC passed away on Monday, December 4, 2023. He was preceded in death by his father, William Claude Hale, Jr. "Bill"; his mother, Lucy Willis Hale; son, Christopher James Hale, and his faithful companion, "Rascal". Jimmy grew up in the Willis Neck Community of Vanceboro attending Ernul Elementary school, Vanceboro Farm Life High School and West Craven High School. A devoted and loving husband, father, and friend, Jimmy worked for 31 years at Weyerhaeuser before his retirement. He had a love for antique cars and enjoyed being on the water boating, fishing, and skiing. Above all, he loved spending time with family and friends. Jimmy leaves behind to cherish his memory, his loving wife of 50 years, Carolyn Wiggins Hale; a sister, Catherine Hales Jackson (Kurt) of Tennessee; a brother, Gary Hale (Cindy) of Vanceboro; aunt, Ruth Mills; special cousin, Gloria Wetherington; children of his heart, Scott and Blair Wetherington; grandchildren of his heart, Thomas and Conner Wetherington; and friends, Gary Morris, Butch and Johnette Wetherington; as well as many special friends and family members, too numerous to count. The family will receive friends from 10 to 11 a. m. on Saturday, December 9, 2023 at Cotten Funeral Home, followed by the funeral service at 11 a. m. in the Chapel. John Carter "Rusty" Woolard, age 79, passed away peacefully surrounded by family in the early hours on Friday, August 4th 2023. Rusty was born and raised in Washington, NC, and graduated from Washington High School in 1963. He had a great joy for baseball and played for many years; famed for being one of the outstanding performers ever produced at Washington High School. In 1963, as a high school senior he signed a Uniform Player Contract with The Pittsburgh Pirates. At 18 years old, an ace pitcher, at that time, he became the first local baseball player in almost two decades to sign a professional baseball contract in Beaufort County. In March of 1965, he met the love of his life Joyce Barrow, saying the day he met her that he knew she would be the one he would marry. Rusty and Joyce were married for 57 years and lived in Craven County where they made their home and raised their family. Rusty was employed with the Craven County Sheriff's Office for many years under the direction of the late Sheriff Pete Bland; rising through the ranks, ultimately finishing his career as a Lieutenant with the Criminal Investigative Division. During his tenure with the Sheriff's office he was instrumental in cultivating many programs such as the Craven County Community Crime Watch Program which was the forerunner of the Crime Stoppers tip line; initiating numerous training programs for fellow employees, one in particular being the incorporation of the first portable drug testing kit for Craven County. In 1987, he was awarded the Outstanding Governor's Award by being cited for his efforts in crime prevention, particularly with the Crimestoppers program. The Crime Stoppers program became one of the most successful programs in the state, as being awarded in the years to come. In 1989, Rusty was appointed as a Craven County Magistrate where he served until his retirement in 2008. Rusty was preceded in death by his father Lindsay, mother Marion, and brothers Robin and Mac Woolard. He is survived by his wife Joyce Woolard, daughter Wendy Craft and husband Dennis, daughter Karen Roberg and husband Tony, grandchildren Michael James, Ashton Craft, and Alexa Thomas, and great-grandchildren Jaci Rae and Colton James. Rusty enjoyed hunting and fishing dearly, his greatest love was the time he spent in serving others in many capacities. +In keeping with his love and service to others, as well as the safety of the community; the family is asking in lieu of flowers that donations be made to West Vanceboro Church of God Benevolence fund, P. O. Box 486, Vanceboro, NC, or the Craven County Sheriff's Office Crime Stoppers Program, 1100 Clarks Road, New Bern, NC 28560. A Memorial of Rusty's life will be held at West Vanceboro Church of God, 2360 NC-43, Vanceboro, NC on Saturday August 12, 2023 at 12 noon. Vanceboro Mrs. Cathy Ann Britt Mills, 55, of Vanceboro, NC, went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, April 8th, 2023 at CarolinaEast Medical Center in New Bern, NC. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, April 12, 2023, at 3:00 PM at Royal-Hall Funeral Home Chapel, 301 McKoy St. Clinton, NC, with Rev. Larry Barnhill officiating. Burial will follow in the Spell-Tyndall Cemetery. Cathy was born on April 7th, 1968 in Craven County to Harry Britt Jr. and the late Linda Gray Spell Britt. She worked for the Craven County Schools Board of Education for 11 years before deciding to become a stay-at-home mom; her favorite job. She enjoyed gardening, cooking, and celebrating the holidays with her family. Cathy was an incredible wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend. She will be deeply missed. Cathy is survived by her husband of 30 years, Kenneth E. Mills; daughter, Taylor Anne Sparapani and husband Joseph of Vanceboro; granddaughter, Layla Gray Sparapani of Vanceboro; father, Harry Britt, Jr. of New Bern; brother, Larry Thomas Britt of New Bern. Visitation for family and friends will be held one hour prior to the services beginning at 2:00 PM on Wednesday, April 12, in the Chapel of Royal-Hall Funeral Home.
