Eva Jeanette Harris Budden, age 83, of the Burwell community, passed away on Sunday, September 3rd, 2023. Jeanette was born October 8, 1939, in Lake City, Florida, to parents John Charlton Harris and Eva Belle Roberts Harris. She graduated from Georgia Baptist Hospital School of Nursing in Atlanta, Georgia, in 1960, becoming a Registered Nurse. She worked in various hospitals in Atlanta before she and her family moved to Carrollton in 1978, where she was employed by Higgins General Hospital in Bremen, Georgia, until her retirement in 2005. Jeanette was married to Alfred Wingfield Budden of Atlanta for 54 years until his death in May 2014. Jeanette is survived by daughter, Kathryn Budden Jeter and her husband, Jerry Jeter of Carrollton; daughter, Jennifer Budden Sica, and her husband Antonio Sica, of Williamson; grandchildren, Michael and his wife, Hope Jeter, Ashton Jeter, and great-grandson Ellis Jeter, all of Carrollton; sister-in-law, Margaret Budden Hatcher of Decatur; and many nieces and nephews from the Lake City and Fort Walton areas of Florida and Atlanta. Besides her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her seven brothers from Lake City, Florida: Edward, E. J. , J. W. , Johnnie, Clarence, Eddie, and Lewis Harris and theirwives. Jeanette spent 44 years as a registered nurse. Caring for people was her calling, and she truly loved what she did. She was known to stay in touch with longtime family members and friends, co-workers, fellow church-goers, and the families of many of her patients over the years with heartfelt, handwritten letters and notes of encouragement-- a habit she kept all of her life, until she was no longer able to put pen to paper. She was a nurturer, an encourager, a lover of Christ, and a giver of care in every aspect of her life to everyone she knew, a real nurse at heart. She loved being a member of Shiloh United Methodist Church in Burwell, and she was a loving mother and wife. Graveside services will be conducted Wednesday, September 6, 2023, at 2:00 PM from Carroll Memory Gardens with Min. Scott Eason officiating. Barbara Anne Anderson Bonds gained her angel wings on November 23, 2023, at her home in Wellborn, FL. Barbara was 79 years old. Barbara was born on December 13, 1943, to Ottis William "Sam" Anderson and Minnie Lee O'steen in Columbus, GA. Shortly after her birth her parents and siblings moved to FL. She graduated from Columbia High School, Lake City, FL in 1961. Barbara was Watermelon Queen in Cross City, FL in 1962. Some years after she was working at Aero Corp, and in December 1968, she met the love of her life, David Julian Bonds. They were married on March 29, 1969, at the family residence on Division Ave. Lake City, FL. She then went on to work at Occidental before moving on to Gulf Life Insurance that eventually became American General Insurance as Office Manager / Field Supervisor for 20+ years. Our Mother, Mother in Love, Nanny, Sister, Aunt, Barbara, was one of the strongest, most courageous, bravest, kindest women to ever walk this earth and our family was blessed to have her as the head of the family. She was a three-time survivor of cancer. Barbara enjoyed volunteering at her church, The Orchard Community Church, and the Christian Service Center. She made it her mission to improve the lives of others. She also had a love of flowers but could not stand weeds. Her passion for flowers was evident, with every bloom in her garden serving as a testament to her nurturing spirit and keen eye for beauty. She was so gifted with a green thumb and enjoyed gardening and caring for her plants. She loved pigs. Purple was her favorite color, even purple pigs. Barbara's life would seem too short to many, but those of us who were blessed to be touched by her understand that her existence and the imprint She left on our hearts exceed the quantity of time that She stayed here. Barbara was talented and adventurous in many aspects of her life. Not a day went by where Barbara did not talk about how much her children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, and family meant to her -- her family was arguably her most important achievement in life. The hole left by her absence is impossible to fill. Barbara preceded in death by both her parents and a sister, Kathryn Smith. Nelda Young

Nelda Mae Young passed away peacefully on November 25, 2023, at the age of 87. Nelda was born December 1935 to Lloyd and Cora Taylor in Roane County, West Virginia. Nelda graduated from Stonewall Jackson High School, Charleston, West Virginia in 1954. She has been a resident of Central Florida since 1961. She retired in 1995 as a successful licensed Real Estate Agent specializing in new home sales. Nelda is survived by immediate family daughters Sherry Johnson (Hammack) of Columbia, SC and Pamela Sue Ligato ("Susie" Young) of Lake City, Florida. Granddaughter's Lauren Nevels (Joshua Nevels) and Jennifer Johnson Conyers; Grandson, Jack Johnson; Great-grandson's Vaughn Nevels, Zachary Johnson, Tyler Conyers; Great-granddaughter Lorelei Nevels. Brother, Roger Taylor and wife Nancy of Dunbar, West Virginia. She is preceded in death by her husband of 48 years, Denny B. Young, infant son John E. Young, her mother and father Lloyd and Cora Taylor, and siblings Robert Taylor and Phyllis Taylor Harris. Nelda enjoyed traveling with Denny by land, sea and air and had many adventures to places like Hawaii, Puerto Rico and Mexico. She was very fond of Country, Bluegrass and Gospel music and frequently attended concerts and enjoyed meeting entertainers and collecting autographs. She took art lessons after she retired and was prolific in painting landscapes which she proudly displayed in her home. Nelda would sew clothing for herself and her daughter's when they were children and even made Bardie doll clothes one year for Susie's birthday. Nelda was responsible for running her neighborhood HOA in Eustis, FL. She was very involved along with husband Denny in Korean Ex-POW associations. They attended national reunions annually and Denny was Chapter President for Lake County, and they would host/co-host local annual reunions in Tavares. She had a special bond with her Granddaughter Lauren, and they were peas-in-a-pod. Nelda will be remembered for her friendly smile, quick wit, tenacity to overcome life's obstacles and the love of her country. Mariell Smith

Mariell D. Smith, 88 of Lake City, passed away on Friday, November 24, 2023 at the Bedrock Rehabilitation and Nursing Center of Lake City. She was born in Coffee County, Alabama, the only daughter and youngest of three children, to the late Bascom Capp Daughtry and Gladys Mae Sanders Daughtry. Ms. Smith was raised in Lake City and attended Columbia High School. She loved her church family and was a member of Pine Grove Baptist Church for over 60 years. Ms. Smith worked in labor and delivery and Lake Shore Hospital and retired with 30 years of service. She enjoyed traveling after her retirement and spending time with her friends and family. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Giles B. "Smitty" Smith; the father of her children, Frederick Braden; two brothers, Marvin Daughtry and Harvey "Buttermilk" Daughtry; and one son, Robert "Pee Wee" Braden. Survivors include her children, Frederick D. "Butch" Braden, David Braden (Donna) and Lora Mae Yates all of Lake City; 14 grandchildren; numerous great and great-great grandchildren; and a host of nieces and nephews. Jonathan Michael "J. J. " Spradley, 38, of Lake City, passed away suddenly on Thursday, November 23, 2023 at the HCA Florida - Lake City Hospital after an unexpected illness. He was born in Gainesville on June 28, 1985 and has made Lake City his home his entire life. He worked for nearly 20 years with Touchstone Heating and Air, where he was currently the lead Service Manager. In his spare time, J. J. enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, boating, spending time with his family and friends, as well as helping others, To know Jonathan was to love him! He left a lasting impact on everyone he met. Jonathan recently found a love for coaching his sons travel and rec ball teams as well as watching and taking his family to baseball games. Jonathan truly loved any and all outdoor activities but more importantly he LOVED the Lord and shared and prayed for anyone he could. Jonathan was a hardworking man who would do anything for anyone! JJ will truly be missed by all. He is preceded in death by his Maternal Grandfather, Erston Kirby; and his brother-in-law, Daniel Thomas Geiger. Jerry Castagna

Jerry Joe Castagna was born on October 6, 1938 in West Frankfort, Illinois to the late Mike Castagna and Sophia Lisowski. Jerry graduated from Frankfort Community High School in 1956 and joined the Army where he served his country as a Military Policeman stationed in Germany. After his tour was completed, he was employed as a refrigeration mechanic at Southern Illinois University for many years until he moved his family to Florida in 1985. Once in Florida, Jerry achieved his lifelong dream of becoming a general contractor. If you knew Mr. Jerry, despite numerous conversations with family and friends trying to get him to retire, he hadn't quite given it up yet. His only hobby was working and he began at the age of 9 peddling newspapers for the Daily American and ended at the age of 85, still building custom homes. Jerry was a good-standing member of the Elks Lodge, Moose Lodge, Lions Club, and American Legion and he was a Mason. Jerry was a kind man and will be missed by all who knew him. Jerry is survived by his wife, Carolyn Castagna, daughter Holly Castagna, and many, many friends. "Obituary of Howard R. Purdy Gainesville - Howard Rufus Purdy, age 100, of 1441 SE 23rd Ave, Gainesville, went to be with the Lord on October 12, 2023, at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Lake City, Florida. His wife, Elizabeth (Slate) Purdy, preceded him in passing in 2006. He leaves three sons: Steve Howard Purdy and his wife Karen of Claymont, DE, Brian Purdy of Gainesville, and Brett Cornelison and his wife Teresa of Gainesville; two daughters: Cheri Purdy (his loving caregiver) and Lora Purdy Ryan, both of Gainesville. He also leaves five grandchildren: Kirsten, Alexander, Brett, Jr. , Melinda, and Brittany; and five great-grandchildren: Helen, Decklen, \u0026amp; Lorraine; David and Solomon. He was also predeceased by his four brothers: Ross, David, Thomas, \u0026amp; Richard and a sister, Emma. Mr. Purdy was born in Chester, Pennsylvania, the son of Ross and Dagna (Tufte), a Norwegian immigrant. He attended the Chester Public School System, and lived through the Great Depression. He served in the US Navy in WWII as a First Class Machinist Mate in the South Atlantic, as the acting Chief Engineer on the Admiral's yacht, and in the Shore Patrol. Since both parents died in the late 1930s, the Purdy boys (David, Thomas, Howard, \u0026amp; Richard) were orphaned. The family of Jane and Robert Simpson, with their two daughters Cassie and Roberta, took them into their home in Folsom, Pennsylvania. This was just as the three oldest boys were enlisting in the military, as Richard was still a teenager. Howard moved to Gainesville in 1959 with his wife Elizabeth to start working for Sperry Rand, where they started their family which included the four youngest of his children named above. He eventually worked at the University of Florida Solar House Project where he was a machinist/mechanic, and he assisted engineering students in machine shop practices while working in the College of Mechanical Engineering. He loved visiting with his friends and relatives in the summer up north in Pennsylvania and Massachusetts. He loved attending church services at Calvary Baptist Church in southeast Gainesville where he was a deacon and longtime Sunday school teacher and raised his children there to follow God, and Highlands Baptist and North Central Baptist Churches in Gainesville until his passing. Services will be this Friday, October 20, at North Central Baptist Church, 8001 NW 23rd Avenue, Gainesville, FL, with viewing and visitation at 1 pm, and the memorial service following at 2 pm. Mrs. Cathy Darlene Ford passed away suddenly on November 12, 2023 at Ed Fraser Memorial Hospital. Cathy was born on October 6, 1952 in Cincinnati, Ohio to Eugene and Patricia Fille. Cathy lived in Jacksonville, Florida from 1995 to 2016 until she relocated to Macclenny, Florida. She was a devoted Christian and was a member of the Macclenny Primitive Baptist Church since 2018. Cathy enjoyed volunteering at the Child Cancer Fund of Jacksonville, Florida. Cathy had two brothers and three sisters. She was preceded in death by her parents and loving spouse of 45 years, James Michael Ford, Sr. She is survived by her son, James (Candace) Ford and daughter, Roberta Ford, as well as five grandchildren and one great grandchild. Stephen Hendricks

Age - 97

Stephen "Bryan" Hendricks, age 97, of Lake Butler, Florida, passed away on November 17, 2023, at the Veterans Administration Hospital, Lake City, Florida. Bryan, the 6th of 12 children, was born to Butler and Ollie Hendricks on August 6, 1926, at the family home in Lake Butler. Bryan left high school at the age of 17 to enlist in the United States Navy during World War II. He served on the USS Skagit, a cargo ship that transported troops and supplies. On September 2, 1945, his ship cruised into Tokyo Bay. There, they sailed past the battleship USS Missouri at the exact time President Truman was signing the peace treaty, ending the war. After serving 2 more years, he was honorably discharged in September 1947. Bryan returned home and graduated with the Union County Class of 1947. He began working for the Atlantic Coastline Railroad in December 1947, traveling around the state working in freight and ticketing. In the Spring of 1951, he met a city girl, Jeanette Ryals from High Springs. They were married November 18, 1951, then moved to Largo for a short period. In a short time, they had 3 children: Stephen (1953) Linda (1954) and Joe (1956). When they returned to Lake Butler, Bryan went to work for Florida Hydrocarbons (the gas plant) as the office manager. He and Jeanette purchased 80 acres in Union County where he began farming. In 1971, he began farming full time, growing row crops, strawberries, and tobacco. He raised cattle and managed an egg production operation. He spent the rest of his life on his farm, and until just a few years ago, he grew a garden every Spring and Fall. He grew enough to feed his family, put some up, and still had enough to give away to friends. At about the age of 94, he decided he needed help, and began supervising Phillip in tending the garden. He enjoyed fishing in the pond with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He spent many hours riding his Gator around the fields so he could tell Joe and Tanner what to do and how to do it. Bryan’s passion and priority was his faith. He loved the Lord, and he was a student of the Bible, always seeking to learn more and serve his Lord and Savior. He treasured every opportunity to discuss the Word with anyone. He played a key role in the unity of the Midway and Danville Churches to establish the Lake Butler Church of Christ. He served as an elder for 35 years from 1969 to 2004. He was a Bible class teacher and church treasurer for many years. He was committed to his Lord and always encouraged his children and grands to prioritize their faith and live a life of service to God. He also loved Union County and served in several roles of leadership inour community. He was a committee member for the Farm Service Agency. He also served as a member of the Union County Farm Bureau Board of Directors and the Elzey Chapel Cemetery Association. Bryan was determined to instill a strong work ethic in his children. There was no tolerance of idleness or slacking. There were always chores and jobs with a high expectation for compliance and quality work. He placed a high emphasis on education and was very proud of the academic accomplishments of his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. Many times, he and Jeanette hosted multiple nieces and nephews in their home for summer break. The kids spent time with "Uncle Bryan and Aunt Nett" learning to work on the farm, but more importantly, building each of their own special relationships. Bryan spoke for years with pride of teaching many picky eaters to enjoy eating their vegetables, fresh from the garden they had tended. Bryan acknowledged the problem that Elzey Chapel Cemetery, where most Hendricks are buried, was running out of space. He took a great interest in finding a place large enough to be the final resting place for the very large, and still growing, Hendricks family. He was instrumental in the work of establishing the Hendricks Family Cemetery on the land once farmed by his father, which remains in the family. The project was completed in 2019, and Bryan will be the first internment. Bryan was preceded in death by his parents, Butler and Ollie Hendricks; Sisters: Marie (Elijah) Brooks and Evelyn (Edison) Paulk; Brothers: John (Eloise & Strick), James (Adolyen), Drew (Josie), Joe (Elaine), Harold (Martha) and Herman Hendricks. Mr. Mark Steven Padgett, 59, passed away unexpectedly at his residence on Wednesday, November 15, 2023. Mark is the son of the late Matthew and Jean O. Stormant Padgett and is preceded in death by a brother-in-law Bobby Roberts. Mark was a lifelong resident of Lake City and had retired from Homes Of Meritt after twenty- years he was a lifelong member of the White Springs Congregational Holiness Church, and he enjoyed helping others, hunting, bass fishing, and especially spending time with his family. Mark is survived by his wife of thirty-two years Evelyn Padgett, Lake City, FL; one son Ryan Padgett (Chloe) Lake City, FL; two brothers Allen Padgett (Susan) Chestnut Mound, TN; and Paul Padgett (Lori) Gainesville, FL; four sisters Veronica Thomas (Johnny) Ft. Richard Slocum

Mr. Richard Lee Slocum, age 73, of Lake City, Florida passed away at his residence following a long illness. Mr. Slocum was born in Oak Harbor, Washington and spent 34 years in the U. S. Army before moving to Tallahassee, Florida and then to Lake City, Florida 24 years ago. He worked as a registered nurse with the V. A. Medical Center and Shands Lake City Hospital and became an instructor with Florida Gateway College Nursing Program in Lake City, Florida. Mr. Slocum graduated from Florida State University with a degree in Nursing, was an Army veteran having been stationed in Germany, Korea and served two tours in the Vietnam War where he received the Purple Heart award. He was a member of the Hopeful Baptist Church and loved riding his motorcycle on short trips. He was preceded in death by his parents, William L. and Beatrice Mayfield Slocum and his brother Dennis Slocum. He is survived by his wife, Carol Slocum of Lake City, Florida; two sons, Nathan (Christy) Slocum of Cumming, Georgia and Jeremiah (Cassandra) Slocum of Sun Prairie, Wisconsin; three grandchildren, Ethan Slocum, Ryan Slocum and Cameron Slocum; one sister, Brenda (Robert) D'Augustine of Bluffton, South Carolina. A funeral service to honor the life of Mr. Slocum will be held at 11 A. M. Saturday, Nov. 18, in the Hopeful Baptist Church with Rev. Billy Young, Pastor, officiating. Interment with military honors will be in Hopeful Baptist Church Cemetery, Lake City, Florida. Visitation and gathering with the family will be from 10 to 11 A. M.
