Cora Morabito

Age - 90

November 13, 2023

Cora Rose Morabito passed away peacefully on November 9th, 2023, surrounded by her loving family. Born in Cold Spring, New York on May 18, 1933, Cora attended Peekskill High School where she was known for her petite size, perky personality, and her talent as a marching twirler. Her best friends in school, Ruth Booth Dale and Frank Lemak, remained close companions throughout Cora's life. Cora worked for Rand McNally where she met her future husband, Richard Morabito, and later worked for Westchester County as a "Meals on Wheels" coordinator. After many years in the work force, Cora retired to live her dream of being a full-time Nanny to her grandchildren, which she lovingly did for 18 years. Cora was truly loved by everyone who met her, and she loved her many friends and neighbors who brought her great joy. An animal lover, Cora doted on her beloved cat and two dogs who adored her. Above all, Cora loved her family and spent her life making sure each person in it felt cherished. Affectionately known by all as Nanny, she never missed a game, performance, or school function. Not only was Nanny a staple at Tom Thumb and the Lakeland school District. She also spent many years traveling upstate or out-of-state to visit her grandchildren. Cora was predeceased by her parents Hugh Potter and Gertrude Rose, and her husband Richard J. Morabito. Cora is survived by her loving son and daughter, Frank Lemak and Linda Lemak, her four cherished grandchildren, Alisha Wolf (Tommy), Laura Maucher (Bob), Frank Lemak (Michele), and Ashley Dominici (Christopher), as well as her ten adoring great-grandchildren Billy, Makalah, Giabella, Carmine, Nevaeh, Nala, Lincoln, Kiki, Logan, and Kylo who Nanny affectionately called "Mikey". Cora/Nanny will be tremendously missed by her many family and friends, however, the love and devotion she gave each of us throughout her life will live on, as will she, in our hearts, thoughts and memories every day. Rest in peace, sweet Nanny, we love you so very much.Show more

Affectionately known by her 24 grandchildren and 27 great grandchildren as "Nanny," she leaves a legacy of faith, love, and passion for life. She adored her sister, Jeanne, and Dominick Galluzzo, for all their generosity, support, and unconditional love. Rosemary was born in Norwalk, Connecticut on September 28, 1929 and raised in Manhattan through her early adult years. She attended Cathedral High School, modeled for Harry Conover Agency, worked for the New York Telephone Company and Maryknoll Fathers. Described by family and friends as a spirited, adventurous, and caring individual, Rosemary persevered through life's challenges and taught those around her the importance of having pride in family achievements, but also gratitude and humility. Through her strong, Catholic faith, specifically in Mother Mary, she portrayed a deep strength of motherly love. Most of Rosemary's years were spent raising her family in Yorktown Heights alongside the love of her life, Jack. She described these years as the happiest years of her life. Rosemary adored spending time crafting, storytelling, wallpapering, and enjoying a cup of tea with close friends around the kitchen table late into the evening and early morning hours. Her wit, humor, and warm heartedness so often left those laughing and enjoying the special, personal bond. Rosemary's greatest gift was passing on her faith to her children, leaving so many wonderful memories to cherish. She will always be in our hearts. Until we meet again, rest in peace, Mom.Show more

Melvyn Schaff

Age - 74

October 11, 2023

Dr. Melvyn J. Schaff, beloved Pediatrician who practiced in Northern Westchester, passed away on October 3rd, 2023. After graduating from New York University, Dr. Schaff attended Medical School at the University of Bologna, Italy, attaining his Doctorate in Medicine and Surgery in 1977. There he met, fell in love with and married the love of his life, Adriana. He returned to New York to complete a residency through New York Medical College at Westchester Medical Center and Lenox Hill Hospital. He retained this affiliation with the Medical College and was an Assistant Clinical Professor of Pediatrics. Following tenure as the Chief Pediatric Resident at Westchester Medical Center, Dr. Schaff began his practice in the Peekskill-Cortlandt Manor area in 1981. He served countless children and their families. His calm demeanor and gentle sense of humor were characteristics particularly suited to the healthcare of children. Dr. Schaff was caring and compassionate and many of his patients continued to see him even as they entered young adulthood. As his involvement in the community grew, Dr. Schaff became the District Physician for Lakeland, Peekskill and Hendrick Hudson school districts. His dedication to the students and staff led him to establish a popular "Dine-Around" that allowed school nurses, medical residents and attending pediatric specialists to gather for lively and useful discussions over meals. He skillfully guided them to explore practical and creative solutions to real problems in children's health. Additionally, mentorship of young people who were interested in medical or nursing careers was a commitment he frequently made. As a Boy Scout co-leader and Committee Chairman of Troop 165, he influenced so many others. In retirement he volunteered to teach English as a second language. All who knew him felt the touch of his kindness. His wisdom knew no bounds. Dr. Schaff is survived by his wife of 43 years, Adriana, his son Peter of Peekskill, New York, and his brother Craig of Montrose, Colorado. A memorial service in celebration of his life will be held at Curry & Giordano Funeral Home in Peekskill, NY on Monday October 16, 2023 from 3:00 to 7:00 P. M.Show more

Desmond and Bertha (Nagle) Desmond, he was the third of their four children. Gerry attended Boston schools, graduating from Brighton High School in 1951. He graduated from Leland Powers School of Broadcasting and Theater in Boston. While serving in the Army and assigned to the Aberdeen Proving Ground in Aberdeen, MD, Gerry met Anne Taylor. They were married on the base in January 1962 and settled in Poughkeepsie, NY, where Gerry had been working at radio station WEOK AM. He was known as the "Morning Mayor" during his career in his adopted hometown. Gerry broadcast hundreds of high school football and basketball games in Northern Westchester. He was especially thrilled to call the New York State championship basketball game in which the Peekskill Red Devils won its first title. He was inducted into the Westchester Sports Hall of Fame as a broadcaster in 1995. Gerry believed in service to the community. He was elected to the Peekskill Board of Education and served on the Hudson Valley Hospital Foundation Board of Directors. His organizing and hosting of annual radiothons benefitted the Peekskill Area Health Center for many years, and he served on the Peekskill Bicentennial Committee. Gerry loved Peekskill and chose to remain here, close to family and the community, instead of retiring to Florida. After his retirement, Gerry made the most of the opportunity to improve his golf game by working at the driving range and pro shop at Mohansic Golf Course. William Johnson

William Johnson

Age - 80

July 22, 2023

William (Bill) Johnson, age 80, of Peekskill, NY passed away peacefully on July 18, 2023 at NY Presbyterian Hospital after a long illness. Bill was born in Valdosta, Georgia and relocated to Peekskill at an early age. Bill was well known in Peekskill as a gifted athlete for basketball and track in the early 1960s. In fact, some of his track records are still unbroken today! Although, there was a lure of a professional basketball career on the horizon, for Bill, his real passion was photography. After graduation from Peekskill High School (PHS), Bill enrolled and graduated from the New York Institute of Photography. He married the former Ruth Bowles and the two settled into life in Peekskill. He started his career at Flair Studios in Croton, NY honing his photography skills before opening his own business in 1971. Specializing in wedding photography and portraits, his stellar reputation grew, and he expanded his business into a full-service camera shop. Bill was always looking for ways to improve Peekskill's downtown, and with his passion for politics, he became an active member of the Chamber of Commerce. He went on to own two more businesses, Jon-Mac Hair Care with John McIver in the early 1980s, and then Ruby's Infants to Teens. Bill continued to pursue his interest in city politics, eventually being appointed to the Peekskill Common Council in the early 1990s. After completing his first term, he subsequently ran and was elected to a four-year term, where he also served as Deputy Mayor. His calm and reasonable voice at council meetings earned him a tremendous amount of respect amongst his colleagues and peers. If you ever dropped by his studio to buy a roll of film or to take a passport photo, it was not unusual to find him engaged in conversation with a local resident about Peekskill politics and helping them to resolve issues or concerns. Even after his retirement, he fielded phone calls and remained informed about local developments. Bill's infectious laugh, insightful counsel, and friendship will be missed by all. He is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Ruth; daughters Karen Johnson of Elmira, NY and Kelley Johnson Goshay of Atlanta, GA; and grandchildren, Kyle, Brandon and Kennedy. He is also survived by his mother, Juanita Jackson of Peekskill, as well as his sister Anita Jackson Long of Peekskill. William or Willie as he is affectionally called, also leaves behind a host of loving family and friends. He was pre-deceased by his stepfather, Artis Jackson and nephew, Gregory Long. Services will be held on Monday, July 24, 2023 at the United Methodist Church located at 1040 Main St in Peekskill. Visitation will begin at 10am, followed by a Celebration of Life at 12:00pm. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to be made in honor of William to TRA (Transportation Resources Access) of Mount Kisco, NY. This organization's mission provides medical transportation services to the Westchester elder community. TRA is a nonprofit that relies heavily on donations and was an invaluable asset during William's healthcare journey. Checks can be mailed to: TRA 487 E Main St. , #218 Mount Kisco, NY 10549 Or you may donate directly online at: my-tra. org/donate/. Additionally, the family will be establishing a scholarship in William's name at his beloved PHS.Show more
