Susan Stanley

Susan Stanley

Age - 78

October 24, 2023

Susan Jean Stanley, 78, died of cancer at home in Prairie Village, Whitewater, Wisconsin, October 23, 2013. Sue was born July 20, 1945, in Gladwin, MI, the first child of Stuart R. "Bud" Kirvan and Annalee Partridge Kirvan. Bud Kirvan was a newspaper man and later a well-known public relations executive and newspaper columnist, and her mother a registered nurse. In her early years she followed her dad to numerous local high school games which gave her a lifelong love of sports. She attended several schools as her family moved around the state and graduated from the University of Michigan High School in Ann Arbor in 1963 and Michigan State University in 1967. Her major was math and her minor geography. She was a member of the Alpha Delta Phi Sorority. After teaching mathematics in Flushing and Southfield, MI for several years and earning a master's degree from MSU in 1971, she signed on to teach math with the Department of Defense Dependents Schools in Seoul, Korea. In her second year she transferred to Okinawa where she met and married Tom Stanley, a high school history teacher from Wisconsin, "a lucky break," Tom said. Together they taught in the Philippines, Japan, Korea and Germany before returning to the United States in 1989. Their son, Howard, was born in 1978 in Japan. In their two decades overseas, they traveled widely in Asia and also in Europe when completing round the world flights back to the States for summer vacation. Sue always said that next to marrying Tom, the best thing she ever did was to work overseas. They had many authentic overseas adventures. Back on U. S. soil, Sue and Tom taught at Canterbury School, a small private institution in Fort Wayne, IN for the last decade of their teaching careers where Howard graduated in 1996. In 1981 and every year afterwards, they summered in or around Bay View, MI near Petoskey where they moved full time in their first phase of retirement and where she embarked on a short but fruitful career as a teller and bookkeeper at First Community Bank in Harbor Springs. They moved to Whitewater in 2009. Sue was extremely well organized and had an iron-clad sense of what should be done and how to do it. Tom once caught her signing a hotel register as "Mr. and Mrs. Susan Stanley," a joke but illustrative of their relationship. In more recent years she has used her executive powers to keep her two much-loved grandchildren shaped up. All said, she was tolerant and reasonable and a valued friend to many. Never a jokester, in her final days she surprised everyone with a sardonic wit that she kept hidden for years. In her teaching days she often had taken the lead in organizing school projects such as graduation ceremonies and educators' days, all very well done as you can imagine. Always a popular and effective teacher, in retirement in Whitewater she found new ways to shine, active in local women's clubs, taking her turn in leading the never-ending effort to preserve one of Whitewater's distinguished old homes and in keeping track of and delivering "Meals on Wheels," and served as an enthusiastic volunteer at the Fort Atkinson Hospital. In addition, she was a veritable "Queen of the Bridge Table" and was a sympathetic and caring neighbor in Prairie Village and the Whitewater community. She was once named Fairhaven's "Resident of the Month" and was called the "Energizer Bunny. " As a sports fan, she converted to the Packers long ago and the Brewers more recently from her Michigan teams. But she always held on to the MSU Spartans through thick and thin. Sue was preceded in death by her parents, Stuart and Annalee Kirvan and is survived by her husband, Tom of Whitewater, son Howard, daughter-in-law Karrie and grandchildren Ryan and Kate of Chicago, siblings Anya (David) Jones of Boulder, CO, Nancy Kirvan of Petoskey, MI and Tom Kirvan of Birmingham, MI, nephews Andrew Harris and wife, Amy, of Longmont, CO, Jesse Kirvan of Park City, UT and Aaron (Mary) Peters and their daughters Leanna and Kennedy of Pinehurst, NC The family thanks the people of Whitewater and Prairie Village and other places they lived for being wonderful neighbors through her illness, and Rainbow Hospice, especially Nurse Kendra, and Nitardy Funeral Services, Whitewater. Special heartfelt thanks to Sue's sister, Nan Kirvan, who stayed with us during the three weeks of hospice care. In lieu of flowers, contributions in her honor can be made to Rainbow Hospice Care. ( ) or Project Mercy, a Christian, non- profit school located in Yetebon, Ethiopia. (https://www. projectmercy. org/) Respecting her wishes, there will be no public services. There will be a family scattering of the ashes at the Greenwood Cemetery in Petoskey in the summer of 2024. Online condolences may be made atShow more

Gerald Krueger

Gerald Krueger

Age - 77

October 6, 2023

After surviving being hit on his bicycle as a child by a drunk driver, three separate collisions with deer on his motorcycle, an additional major motorcycle accident causing 13 broken bones, and a cancer scare, Gerald (Jerry) Krueger passed away peacefully in the early evening hours of Thursday, September 28, 2023, at the age of 76 following Alzheimer's and other health challenges. Christine LeBlond Krueger (nee Rumsey), his devoted wife of nearly nine years, was singing hymns at his bedside while he received comfort/hospice care at the Sunset Ridge Memory Care Center in Jefferson, Wisconsin. Born to H. Ben and Marie (nee Alexander) Krueger on November 24, 1946, in Watertown, Wisconsin, Jerry worked long hours on the family farm in his early years. He attended Lake Mills High School, graduating in 1964 before enlisting in the United States Army. During his service, he was stationed for three years in Heidelberg, Germany, which allowed him to explore Europe, cementing his passion for travel, photography, cars, and motorcycles, as well as German beer steins and cuckoo clocks. After returning to Wisconsin, Jerry would propose marriage only one month after meeting Marily Kutz from Fort Atkinson, Wis. Each Friday for months, after he got done with his shifts at Perry Printing in Waterloo, Wis. , where he would work for over 30 years, he would speed his blue 1969 Chevy Camaro to Sleepy Eye, Minnesota where she had started her divine call as a Lutheran grade schoolteacher. They were married on August 16th, 1969, and were blessed with three children: Lisa, Chad, and Al. Marily passed away peacefully on March 10, 2014, at 67, at Moffitt Cancer Center in Tampa, Florida, following a battle with pancreatic cancer, just shy of their 45th anniversary. Clearly an eternal romantic, Jerry would only accelerate his usual timeline by proposing to Chris LeBlond within one week of meeting her as they watched the fireworks show at EPCOT at Walt Disney World on their second date. They would be married the following week at St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Beverly Hills, Fla. , on March 25, 2015. Chris's children, Scott and Cherie joined the combined family. Following an upbringing as a Wisconsin farm kid, Jerry was no stranger to hard work and helping. To his children, he will be remembered as a dedicated provider who put their education and needs before his. He was a regular at their events, but from time to time missed games, wrestling matches, and musical performances while he picked up overtime shifts. Whenever guests and food were involved, he always offered to cook, and he never seemed happier than when bellies were full after he grilled chicken, baked ham, or served mashed potatoes. This passion continued later in life when he was a constant volunteer cook at St. Paul's school in Beverly Hills, Fla. Sprinkled throughout his later life in Wisconsin and Florida, he also served as a school bus driver for Lakeside Lutheran High School and the Citrus County School District. One of Jerry's greatest joys was spending time with his eight grandchildren and six step-grandchildren. In addition, his life was filled with many motorcycles, rides, and trips with his brother, Dick, and later his sons and grandsons. He was always quick with a story or to strike up a conversation with random strangers, to the utter embarrassment of his children and grandchildren. At home on Tesmer Lane in Lake Mills, Wis. , Jerry cultivated a large garden with endless tomatoes and asparagus. For years, the family raised chickens for roasting, and pigs for the Jefferson County Fair, the sale of which was put toward a college fund for Lisa, Chad, and Al. He also was a big fan of Walt Disney World, visiting the first year it was opened with Marily and many times in years after. This would also be an extraordinary place for Jerry and Chris when they were regular annual pass holders. Gerald is survived by his wife, Christine Krueger; daughter, Lisa (Carl) DeSpiegelaere; sons, Chad (Paula) Krueger and Alan (Jennifer) Krueger; step-children, Scott (Andrea) LeBlond and Cherie Betts; grandchildren, Benjamin (Miriam) Degidio, Colin, Eli, and Dylan Krueger, and Justin, Kate, and Greta Krueger; step-grandchildren, Gabriel LeBlond, Jesse, Matthew, Michael, and Anna Zarletti, and Lillian Betts; several nieces, nephews, and cousins; sister-in-law, Ellen Krueger; and aunt, Mildred Lemke. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Thomas and Benjamin Richard Krueger; sister, Beverly Farnsworth; wife, Marily Krueger; grandson, Noah Degidio; nephew, Benjamin Richard Krueger; and niece, Michelle Orchard. Gerald's visitation (12:00 p. m. - 1:00 p. m. ) and Service of Memorial and Thanksgiving (1:00 p. m. ) will take place on Sunday, October 15 at St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church (Newville - W8496 Parsonage Lane, Waterloo, Wis. ), followed by a luncheon and gathering. Later this year, there will be a Military Recognition Ceremony at the United States National Cemetery in Bushnell, Florida, which will serve as his final resting place. The family asks that instead of flowers, please consider memorial contributions in his honor to the Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Kingdom Workers Fund, Martin Luther College Scholarship Fund, or the Alzheimer's Association.Show more
