Emmitt Marshall Obituary

Emmitt Bruce Marshall, 94, of Spotsylvania passed away on Sunday, May 7, 2023 at Spotsylvania Regional Medical Center. He was born on June 28, 1928 in Spotsylvania. Emmitt retired from Marshall Bros. Lumber Co. after over 60 years of ownership and from the Spotsylvania Board of Supervisors after serving for 34 years. He was also a member of the Farm Bureau, Lions Club, and Berkeley Hunt Club and was a dedicated deacon of Bethany Baptist Church. Emmitt was a lumberman, auctioneer, deacon, avid turkey and deer hunter, and champion softball pitcher. He loved his family, friends, neighbors, and Spotsylvania County. Survivors include his daughter, Donna Smith (Michael); daughter-in-law Peggy Sue Marshall; grandsons Ross Smith and Kevin Marshall (Leslie); great-grandchildren Taylor, Kallie, Haley, William, and Emma; great-great-grandchildren Audrey and Waylon; sisters-in-law Peggy Marshall, Russell Tignor, and Helen Crittenden; a host of nieces and nephews; and caregivers Kayla, Debbie, Linda, Wanda, Christina, and Moose. Emmitt was preceded in death by his wife of over 72 years, Viola Mills Marshall; son Donald Bruce Marshall; parents E. Solon and Daisy Marshall; brothers Ryland, Marion, and Mason; and nephews Daniel, Michael Sr. , and Michael Jr. The family will receive friends from 5 to 8 p. m. on Friday, May 12, 2023 at Covenant Funeral Service, Fredericksburg. A service will be held at 11 a. m. on Saturday, May 13 at Bethany Baptist Church with Rev. Amos Healy, Rev. Ben Thomas, and Rev. Susan McBride officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. Pallbearers will be Ross Smith, Kevin Marshall, Ryan Carr, Paul Prince, Mark Marshall, William Shepherd, Jaime Hosey, and Brendon Talley. Honorary pallbearers will be member of the Berkeley Hunt Club. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Bethany Baptist Church (PO Box 408, Thornburg VA 22565) or Spotsylvania Fire and Rescue (PO Box 146, Spotsylvania VA 22553).
