Emily "Lee" Meier, age 79, of Bonne Terre, passed away Saturday, October 7, 2023, at Parkland Hospital in Bonne Terre. She was born on Friday, March 31, 1944, in Michigan. She was preceded in death by her parents, Cecil and Elda Weiss-Stegall; loving husband, James R. Meier; grandson, Nicholas "Nick" Cantu; siblings, Renee "Ovit" Baker and Lynn Tinnin. Lee was a barber for over 50 years, owning and operating Hairy Canary in Desloge and Magic Hare in Farmington. She loved socializing and being with her family. Lee enjoyed going thrift store shopping, playing bingo and showing Boxers. She was proud of her champion Boxer named Pandora. Lee is survived by her loving daughter, Cecelia "CeCe" Cantu-Portell; stepson, Allan Stephens; granddaughter, Danielle Grindstaff and husband Kyle; four grandchildren, Gage Cantu, Myah Richter, Parker Cantu and Oviana Grindstaff; sister, Sharon Rentfro and husband Steve along with other family and friends. Visitation will be held at C. Z. Boyer & Son Funeral Home in Bonne Terre on Monday, October 9, 2023, from 5:00 PM until 8:00 PM. Visitation will resume on Tuesday, October 10, 2023, at the funeral home from 9:00 AM until service time of 11:00 AM. With Pastor John Hardin officiating.

Katie Young, 32, of Bonne Terre, passed away November 9, 2023, surrounded by ones she loved. Katie was born November 30, 1990, in St. Louis, to Alan and Kimberly (Smith) Gibson. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Bonne Terre as well as a member of the North County Class of 2009 and their Valedictorian. Katie went on to achieve her bachelor's degree at Coe College of Cedar Rapids, Iowa with a minor in chemistry and a major in neuroscience in 2013. She later received her master's degree at Rollins School of Public Health. Katie was employed at St. Louis Children's Hospital at Washington University where she worked on the pediatric hematology and oncology team. She loved hunting, fishing, racing motocross, traveling and training dogs. Katie was an excellent cook and enjoyed creating new dishes, but she could never master baking. She was known as the love at first sight to anyone who met her. She was preceded in death by her maternal grandparents, Glen and Dorothy Smith; uncle, Ron and Steve Whittier; grandmother in-law, Warna Young-Lucas and stepmother in-law, Beth Glore. Katie was a loving wife to her husband, Steven Young; adoring daughter to Alan and Kim Gibson; fun loving sister to Emily Barnett and husband Joshua; and fur mommy to Jack and Kota. She is also survived by paternal grandparents, Wayne and Evelyn Gibson; mother in-law, Valerie Young; father in-law, Robert Young; special friends; Spencer Roth, Amber Black and Daniel Jones; several other family members and friends also survive. Visitation will be held at C. Z. Boyer and Son Funeral Home in Desloge, Monday, November 13, 2023, from 4:00 PM until 9:00 PM. The visitation will resume Tuesday, November 14, 2023, at 9:00 AM until the time of service at 11:00 AM. Pastor Alan David will be officiating. Interment will follow at St. Francois Memorial Park in Bonne Terre. Memorials may be directed in honor of Katie's memory to the Ronald McDonald House or American Cancer Society.Show more

Patricia Ann Basinger, 71, of Bonne Terre passed away peacefully Saturday, November 4, 2023, at her home surrounded by her loved ones. Pat was born Tuesday, January 1, 1952 in St. Louis, to the late James and Geraldine (Nease) Roach. Pat attended the First Baptist Church of Bonne Terre. Pat's journey started over 40 years ago in mental health awareness. She started at Mineral Area Hospital and continued to become a Delegate for Alcoholics Anonymous. She enjoyed traveling, while reaching out to very large groups educating them on the basics of the 12-step program. Her kind heart and compassion for others showed daily. In her spare time, she enjoyed cooking, baking, canning, crocheting, and camping in the fall while watching the clouds pass by. Pat was a spiritual person, loved her family, church family and Jesus. Pat is survived by her loving husband Otis Earl Basinger, Jr. ; daughters, Christine Basinger-Hartwick and Donna Collier and husband David; five grandchildren, Nick Basinger, Lauren Hartwick, Lydia Collier, Annie Rose Collier, and Bryan Basinger; two great grandchildren, Ariah and Elijah Basinger, along with a host of church friends and loved ones that knew and loved her. Donald E. Hawkins, Sr. 86, of Bonne Terre passed away October 30, 2023 at his home surrounded by his loving family. He was born in St. Louis, MO on February 25, 1937 to the late Rollin Guy and Sarah (Huskey) Hawkins. Don had began his 70 year career in the grocery business as a teenager working for National Food Stores in St. Louis and later for General Grocers. He went on to own several grocery stores including MoHawk Food Store, Don Hawk Food Store and was partial owner of six Save A Lot Grocery Stores with his family. He also owned multiple apartment complexes in the St. Francois County area with his wife and children. Don was very active in the Bonne Terre Community having been a member of the Bonne Terre Chamber of Commerce, St. Joseph Catholic Church, Bonne Terre Rotary and was a founding member of the Mineral Area College Foundation Board. He actively supported many local programs in Bonne Terre and surrounding areas. He enjoyed hearing about the accomplishments of local youth, especially of those who had worked for him in the grocery stores. He loved traveling and boating, spending a lot of time with family and friends at Lake of the Ozarks, MO and Bonita Springs, FL. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, James and Robert Hawkins; sister, Patricia Bellamy and her husband Don; brother in-law, Charlie "Eddie" Mercille; and their 16-year fury companion, Baylea Girl. Don is survived by his loving wife of 35 years, Alice "Midge" (Mercille) Hawkins; three daughters, Diane Schnable and husband Fred, Debbie Copeland and Carl Autry, Donna Jean Weber and husband Wayne; four sons, Donnie Hawkins and wife Laurie, Dale Hawkins and wife Jan, David Hawkins and wife Tracy, Talbot Pratt and wife Nadia. He was the proud grandfather of sixteen grandchildren; twenty-seven great grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren; in-laws Julie Hawkins, Verna Mercille, Jeannie and Del Pratt, Debbie and Virgil Boyer; many special cousins, nieces, nephews and friends. There will be no visitation, but a special mass will be held at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Bonne Terre, MO on Friday, November 3, 2023, at 11:00 AM, with Father John Schneider officiating. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations be made to the American Heart Association, if so desired.Show more

Merle Shrum, 87, of Bonne Terre passed away Monday, September 18, 2023, at Parkland Health Center in Bonne Terre. Merle was born Friday, September 18, 1936, in Hillsboro, to the late Arthur Spellmeyer and Frances Evelyn (Lanham) Spellmeyer-Patton Merle was a devoted member of the First Baptist Church of Bonne Terre where she loved playing the piano, singing in the choir, baking, and helping with any church events. Merle was very involved in her community, where she volunteered with a service time of over 3 decades at Helping Hand in Bonne Terre. In her younger years she enjoyed dressing up, wearing jewelry, competing in beauty pageants and was a runner up in the Miss Missouri Pageant in the 1950s. In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her loving husband, Donald Shrum; son, Michael Shrum; brothers, Art, and Don Spellmeyer Merle is survived by her loving daughter-in-law, LaDonna Shrum; grandchildren, Lindsay (Corey Carriker) Shrum, Derek (Jessica) Shrum, Dylan Shrum and Lauren Shrum; great-grandchildren, CJ, Charlee, Camdyn, Chloe, Carriker and Thomas Shrum. She will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved her, including her church family. Visitation will be held Friday, September 22, 2023, from 10:00 AM until service time of 11:00 AM at the First Baptist Church of Bonne Terre with Pastor Alan David officiating. Interment will follow at 2:00 PM at Sunset Memorial Park Cemetery, 10180 Gravois Rd. Affton, MO 63123.
