Emily Ann Hughes Smith, 81, of Bladenboro, passed away on Sunday, September 10, 2023 at her home surrounded by her family. She was preceded in death by her parents, Hollan and Alma Bowen Hughes. Emily leaves behind her husband, Bobby Smith, of the home; son; Mark Owens and wife Laura of Arnold, MD; daughters: Renae Taylor and husband Roger of Lumberton, Amanda Anderson and husband Steve of Bladenboro, Leigh Deaver and husband Pete of Bladenboro, Kimberly Chafin and husband Keith of Hartsville, SC; brothers: Mitchell Hughes and wife Patsy of Bladenboro, Harold Hughes and wife Erma of Lumberton; sisters: Helen Petrucelli of Fayetteville, Nancy Sykes of Lumberton, Mary Eliason and husband Richard of Burlington; grandchildren: Lexia Turner and husband Rashawn, Chris Owens and wife Anna, Cory Hester and wife Leann, Jordan Hester, Nicholas Peavy, Owen Peavy and wife Tyler, Kassidy Leonard and husband Chris, Noah and Eric Deaver, Scott Anderson and wife Tiffany, Kinsley and Kullen Chafin; great-grandchildren: Hollyn Hester, Riley Hester, Ella Grace and Hudson Leonard, Emmie and Alex Peavy, Helena and Kylie Owens. Emily made a lot of sacrifices for her family. She worked three jobs to support her children. She always put others begore herself, but she loved her family most of all, especially the grandkids and great grandkids. She took pleasure in cooking the best cakes and biscuits for her family. Emily enjoyed singing in her church choir and as long as she was able loved to spend time with her family at the beach and in the mountains with her sisters. As long as she was physically able, Emily cooked every Sunday for her family. Emily was proud of her heritage. She was raised by Godly parents, who were both ministers. Emily made it her life’s mission to be the best mother in the world and she succeeded. The family will receive friends from 1:45pm - 2:45pm on Tuesday, September 12th at New Light Church. Service following at 3pm with Reverend Cory Hester and Reverend Dale Hester. Burial will follow in Lewis Cemetery in Bladenboro.

Wayne Thompson, 80, of Bladenboro went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, November 19, 2023. He was born in Bladen County on April 18, 1943, son of the late Wilbert Anderson Thompson and Iretha Smith Thompson. Wayne was a wonderful husband, father, and neighbor. He was an active lifelong member of Community Baptist Church in Bladenboro where he served as a Sunday School teacher, Treasurer, and choir member. Affectionately known in the neighborhood as "Mr. T’, he was known for his silly stories, his patience in giving driving lessons, tons of laughter and rides on his golf cart. Wayne enjoyed spending time with his family, traveling, beach trips, and talking, especially about politics. He will always be remembered as that friend who sticks closer than a brother and for his shining example as a man of God. Wayne was preceded in death by his parents, and three brothers, Houston, Ray, and Tony Thompson. Left to cherish his memory are his beloved wife, Peggy A. Thompson of the home, son Gary Thompson (Moah) of Grays Creek, daughter Melanie Lynn Thompson of Puerto Rico, sister Jane T. Pait (Stewart) of White Oak, several nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends on Wednesday, November 22, 2023, from 1-2 pm at the Community Baptist Church in Bladenboro followed by a funeral service at 2:00 pm. A burial will follow the services in the church cemetery. Cletus E. Dowless, 89, of Bladenboro passed away on Saturday, November 18, 2023. He is preceded in death by his parents, Nealey and Sallie Davis Dowless; wife Betty Melvin Dowless, daughter, Gwenda Smith; son, Dale Dowless; brothers, Warren and Gurney Dowless, and sister, Gladys Pharr. Cletus looked forward to Sunday nights when his children and grandchildren came over to eat. Cletus loved to coon hunt, train dogs to coon hunt. You would often see him sitting in his chair watching westerns or listening to Gaither’s singing, but his all-time favorite thing was watching Gun Smoke. He enjoyed going to the mountains with his wife, while they were there, they would enjoy going to the singing on the mountains. After planting season was over, you would find him sitting on the farm watching the crops grow. He is survived by his son, Ronnie Dowless and wife Peggy of Bladenboro; two brothers, Harold and Kenneth Dowless both of Bladenboro; sister, Sallie O’Sullivan of Elizabethtown; grandchildren: Clayton, his children, Catherine and Kimberly; Crystal, her children, Travis, Noah, and Colt; Henry, his daughter, Addie; Lisa, her son, Jeremy; Carrie, her daughter, Georgia; Ashley, her daughter, Natalie; Amanda, her children, Emma and Ellie; Bobby Dale, his children, Luke and Joseph, a granddaughter Keana, and a great-great granddaughter Harper. The family will receive friends on Monday, November 20, 2023, from 6:00pm until 8:00 pm at Bladen-Gaskins Funeral Home. Debbie Sue Brisson Shaw, 61, of Bladenboro passed away on Tuesday, November 14, 2023 at her home. She was born in Columbus County on August 12, 1962 the daughter of the late Harvey Lee Brisson and Clara Cribb Brisson. She married the love of her life at age 16, Mike Shaw, and together they raised two sons. He was her best friend, and she was his "Poo Bear". Debbie was all about family. She loved it when they all were together, eating, laughing, and enjoying life. She loved the Lord and loved her church family. She especially enjoyed singing gospel songs and quoting scriptures while she fed "The Ladies", her pet chickens. Debbie had such a kind, loving heart and would give the shirt right off her back if she knew someone needed it. Her compassionate and gentle spirit will forever be remembered by all that knew and loved her. Debbie leaves behind her beloved husband of 44 years, Mike Shaw of the home, sons Joshua Shaw (Shavon) of Bladenboro and Jonathan Shaw (Tiffany) of Bladenboro, brothers Reverend Ronnie Brisson (Kathy) of Bladenboro, Lee Brisson (Vanessa) of Georgia, sisters Linda Averitt (Billy) of Bladenboro, Wendy Jackson (James) of Lumberton, four grandchildren Chasity Saraidaris, Dylan Saraidaris, Eric Shaw and Corbin Shaw, and two great grandchildren John and Hadin Deese. Eldra Ann Cain Davis, 82, of Bladenboro went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, November 15, 2023. She was born and raised in Bladen County, daughter of the late Frank Cain and Bessie Willoughby Cain. Eldra was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother. She loved spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren who were the apple of her eye. She enjoyed attending all their sporting events when her health allowed or just sitting with them listening to the stories of how the game went. Eldra was an active member in her home church where at times she served as a Sunday School teacher, WMU Leader, Church Secretary and choir member. She was an avid reader and frequent visitor of the Bladen County Libraries. A sweet, loving lady that will be dearly missed. Eldra was preceded in death by her parents and her beloved husband, Terry Davis. She is survived by son Craig Davis (Kathy) of Bladenboro, daughter Lynn Brisson (Gary) of Dublin, brothers J. D. Cain (Ann) of Lumberton and Houston Cain of Florence, SC, two granddaughters Madilyn Brisson, Holland Davis and two grandsons, Cole Brisson and Nate Davis. The family will receive friends from 1-2 pm on Saturday, November 18th at Sandy Grove Baptist Church in Bladenboro. Funeral service will immediately follow at 2 pm with the Reverend Kevin Kinlaw officiating. Services will conclude in the Bladen Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Elizabethtown. Margaret Elneta Bass Heustess, 86, of Bladenboro passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on Tuesday, November 14, 2023. Margaret was born on August 3, 1937, in Columbus County to the late Lonnie Bass and Glennie Mae McCall Bass. She committed her life to being a farmer's wife and raising her children. She was a wonderful homemaker and cook. Her joy was feeding and watching the hummingbirds from her back porch. Her happiest days were sitting in a boat with her husband catching fish. Throughout her life, Margaret used her cake decorating skills to make numerous birthday and wedding cakes for others. She was a devoted Christian and a long-time member of New Center Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband of 67 years, Harris Heustess; son, Ronnie Heustess; granddaughter, Erica Parks; her sisters, Gladys Butler (Billy), Merle Ransom (Buddy); and brothers, Kenneth "Buck" Bass and Thomas Bass. Gary Carlton McLean, age 62, of Bladenboro passed away on Tuesday, October 24, 2023. He was born in Bladen County on May 17, 1961 to the late J. C. McLean and Dorothy Driggers McLean. Gary was a compassionate, giving man. He adored his family, especially his loving wife and best friend, Patricia and his daughter, " Little Yankie Rose", Crystal. He enjoyed spending time with his family camping, fishing on Black River and hunting. Gary had a way of making everyone feel better. His love of nature and his ability to bring sunshine to everyone he met will forever be remembered. Gary was preceded in death by his parents, one brother Stevie McLean and one sister, Jackie Deaver.
