Mercedes Allen-Winbush

Mercedes Allen-Winbush

Age - 65

Mercedes Allen Winbush, cherished daughter of Mattie B. Allen and William H. Allen, was born on August 16, 1958, in Detroit Michigan. She was an exceptional student and graduated from Cass Technical High School. Her ambition and drive led her to receive a Bachelor's Degree in Chemical Engineering at Wayne State University in Detroit Michigan. Mercedes led an exemplary career as one of the first black female chemical engineers in her department at Xerox in Rochester, New York, earning a US patent for her contribution. She later completed her Master's in Education at Nazareth College and pursued her love for teaching. She worked as a substitute teacher in the Webster Central School District. Mercedes Winbush, a woman of love and commitment, met Darrel Winbush in college at Wayne State University. Their love blossomed and they were joined in holy matrimony on October 25, 1984. Their love multiplied with three well-loved children. Mercedes was a caring, selfless, and active mother. Whether it be soccer games, baseball games, recitals, or school events, Mercedes always made time to support and encourage her children. Eventually, she welcomed one grandchild in 2014. She embraced and cherished her role as a grandmother and had a substantial influence on her granddaughter Jordyn's, early life. Pushing her and guiding her, she only wanted the best for Jordyn. Mercedes' legacy of love will forever live on in the hearts of those she has touched. Music was a significant aspect of Mercedes' life. She was a talented, passionate, and classically-trained musician. She played countless instruments - flute, violin, and harp - to name a few; but her primary instrument of choice was the piano. She began piano lessons as a young girl and weaved her musical skills effortlessly into her adult life. Mercedes was a diligent music teacher at Webster Montessori School and an accompanist for many school choirs in the Webster Central School District. She taught piano lessons to aspiring young children and to excited adults seeking to learn the basics. Mercedes also led the youth choir at Central Church of Christ and frequently performed at various church and community events, weddings, and concerts. She loved classical music (if you knew her, you knew her favorite composer was Beethoven), but she was also a soulful musician and adored gospel music. Her go-to songs in her repertoire were beloved gospel songs and church hymns from her childhood. Mercedes understood the value in education first hand. She pushed her children to excel academically and fully supported their academic endeavors. Mercedes also understood the value of faith. She was a devoted Christian woman with an unwavering faith and shared her faith with her family. She attended the Central Church of Christ regularly and would give singing and musical advice as needed. When her health limited her physical presence, she would tune in to the online services of Schraeder Lane Church of Christ at home with her family every Sunday. Mercedes is survived by her loving sons Marcqus and Damon, adoring daughter Madison, beloved granddaughter Jordyn, and devoted husband Darrel. She is mourned by her loving sister Marquettas. In celebrating Mercedes' life, let us remember her as a passionate musician, dedicated educator, loving family member and friend, and an overall beautiful human being. She will be dearly missed by all who had the privilege of knowing herShow more
