Elna (Faynell) Burks Layne, age 86 of Gladys, departed this life peacefully on Friday, September 8, 2023 at her residence. She was born on August 25, 1937 to the late Clarence Oliver Burks and Rosa Anita Nowlin Burks. She was married and devoted to her husband of many years, the late Silas I. Layne. She graduated from the Campbell County School system in Rustburg, VA. She retired from Dan River after over 30 years of employment. She received multiple awards and accolades from Dan River for her service and quality of her work and was one of the first African American Employees of Dan River. She professed her faith at an early age and joined Evergreen Baptist Church. Prior to her illness, she was a faithful and active member of the Evergreen Baptist Church Missionary, Kitchen Committee, a Sunday School Teacher, and a Financial Secretary. She also was a recipient of the "Seasoned Saint Award" from Evergreen Baptist Church. You could often hear her leading one of her favorite hymnals during praise and worship "Count Your Blessings. "She loved her family, traveling, shopping, and yard work. One of her favorite things was to cook soul food and host her family and friends for gatherings. She had a love for crossword puzzles and loved trying to keep up with all of her children, grandchildren, nieces, and nephews. In addition to her parents and husband, she is preceded in death by 11 siblings. She leaves to cherish her memory three children, Peggy Bradley (Walter) of Naruna, Tammy Cabell (Floyd) of Rustburg, and Michael K. Layne, Sr. (Sharon) of Gladys VA; a god daughter, Katrina Easley (Derrick) of Naruna; six grandchildren, Tasha Layne of Raleigh, NC, Michelle Layne of Richmond, VA, Michael K. Layne, Jr. of Gladys, April Bradley-Hall (Robert) of Naruna, Cordaro Bradley of Naruna, and Brandon Cabell (Shanice) of Mebane, NC; six great grandchildren, Kristina Bradley, Bryce Hall and Brent Hall, all from Naruna, Jordan Layne and DaKota Christian of Appomattox, and Carson Cabell in Mebane, NC; three god grandchildren, Deshawn Easley of Yorktown, VA, Tevin Easley of Brookneal, and Tyler Easley of Danville; one sister, Molly Little of Clayton, NC; one brother, Owen Burks (Francis) of Rustburg; three sisters-in-law, Matilda Layne, Margine L. Evans, and Betty J. Layne, all of Naruna, VA. She also leaves a dedicated caretaker, Robin Wilford of Brookneal, VA; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends who will miss her dearly. "Deborah Kay Ellett Tipton, 72, of 4350 Lambs Church Road, Altavista died Friday, November 17, 2023 at Lynchburg Health \u0026amp; Rehabilitation Center. She was the wife of the late Hugh Leslie \u0026quot;Les\u0026quot; Tipton. She was born May 12, 1951 in Richmond, a daughter of the late Lowell Eugene Ellett and Georgia Mason Rae Ellett. Deborah was an artist, a horse trainer, and member of the Spanish Mustang Registry. She was known in the horse enthusiast community for the work she did to establish Spanish Mustangs in Virginia. She loved gardening, writing, music, genealogy, and storytelling, and she developed skills in a multitude of creative hobbies. Deborah enjoyed the pursuit of knowledge and was often studying obscure topics and learning new skills; she never met a DIY project she couldn\u0027t handle. Her adventurous spirit took her around the US on motorcycles, road trips, and more recently in a small trailer she cleverly designed and customized. She loved to beautify her home and yard, bringing color and vibrancy to every place she ever lived. Her energy was warm and vibrant, she was friendly with everyone she met and always ready to share stories and laughter. She was extremely generous and giving, and found great joy in finding unique gifts for those she loved, especially her children. She is survived by two daughters, Amber Adaire of Petersburg and Carmen \u0026quot;Cally\u0026quot; Smith of Lynch Station; and one grandchild, Gerek Buchanan. She was preceded in death by her sister, Kathryn Bryant. The family will be conducting a memorial service on Saturday, December 9, 2023 at 2:00 p. m. at the Blanford Church and Cemetery, 319 South Crater Road, Petersburg, VA 23803. "John William \u0026quot;Billy\u0026quot; Davis, 49, of 191 Andrews Lane, Altavista went to be with the Lord Thursday, November 30, 2023 at Centra Lynchburg General Hospital. He was the husband of Cynthia \u0026quot;Cindy\u0026quot; Davis for 22 years. He was born March 10, 1974 in Rocky Mount, a son of the late Bill Davis and Vicki Tina Hudson Bowells. He was a member of Baptist Tabernacle. He enjoyed hunting and was a member of Red Dog Hunt Club and White Hall Hunt Club. Billy was a jack of all trades. In addition to his wife, he is survived by three daughters, Sandra Carol Varnadore and her husband Kendall of Hurt, Jennifer Michelle Grubb and her husband, Jason of Franklin County, and Jamie Kathryn Dillard and her husband Michael of Altavista; one sister, Tina Hudson Horsely, and her three children of Altavista; eight grandchildren, Logan Patsel, Tyler Kirby, Nathan Kirby, Autumn Hancock, Kailey Kirby, Haydn Kirby, Kaydence Grubb and Amelia Dillard; and one aunt, Wren Boydd. He was born May 26, 1942 in Gretna, a son of the late Charlie Patrick Bullington and Susan Hogan Bullington. Bull was a walking horse trainer. In 2021, he received the Walking Horse Trainer\u0027s Association Lifetime Achievement Award where they summarized his lifetime accomplishments. His name is followed by a long list of fruitful achievements as follows; in 1983, he was the Trainers\u0027 Show Champion (Pride\u0027s Jubilee Star) and Trainer of the Year; in 1985, he was inducted in the Celebration Hall of Fame and rode Pride\u0027s Final Edition to the World Grand Championships; in 1986, he was the Trainers\u0027 Show Champion (Pride\u0027s Jubilee Star) and rode Pride\u0027s Jubilee Star to the World Grand Championships; in 1990, he was Trainer of the Year; in 1991, he was the Trainers\u0027 Show Champion (Wired); and in 1992, he was the Trainers\u0027 Show Champion (Jubilee\u0027s Rising Star). Bull was described as a \u0026quot;true legend\u0026quot; in his field, a quiet man with a gruff voice that garnered attention wherever he was. He didn\u0027t smile much but was liked by all. He is survived by one daughter, Lisa Crawford of Gladys; two brothers, Willie Bullington of Blairs, and Cordell Bullington of Gretna; two sisters, Jewell Leazer of Madison Heights and Geraldine Stone of Myrtle Beach, SC; one grandson, Clinton Crawford (Chyanna Hinkle); best little buddy, Dallas; and a number of nieces and nephews. "Michael Edward Goldsmith, 80, of 135 Sawgrass Lane, O\u0027Fallon, Illinois died peacefully Friday, November 3, 2023, at Evelyn\u0027s House in Missouri. He was born November 3, 1943, in Syracuse, New York, a son of the late Lewis Goldsmith and Charlotte Miller Goldsmith. A career educator, he retired from Baltimore County Schools in 2012 after more than 30 years of service to the Maryland Public School system. He worked tirelessly to improve the lives of young people. Michael had a passion for boating after getting his start on the finger lakes of New York as a Sea Scout in his youth. His second passion, driving buses, started as a job to pay his way through college. He drove charter buses his entire adult life and loved sharing the sites and attractions of the eastern seaboard with countless travel groups. A loving father and grandfather, he was known well for telling anyone who would listen the recent accomplishments of his children and grandchildren. He would light up anytime his grandchildren would visit. Of all his titles throughout his life it\u0027s easy to say \u0027Papa Mike and Grandpa\u0027 were his favorite. He is survived by two sons, Gary (Niki) Goldsmith of Warner Robins, GA and Geoff Goldsmith of O\u0027Fallon, IL; three daughters, Amanda Goldsmith of Towson, MD, Katy (Patrick) Ryan of Richmond, TX and Jennifer (C. He was a graduate of William Campbell High School and served his country in the U. S. Army. He was the founder of The Finly Corporation in 1971 and retired after many years of service. Royall was a member of Hyland Height Baptist Church, Gladys Ruritan Club, and Campbell County Cattlemen\u0027s Association. During his lifetime, he had a love for fishing, farming, and gardening. He leaves behind a legacy of hard work, dedication, guidance, and generosity. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three siblings, and a son-in-law.
