Ellen Buren Melvin left us and joined our Lord in the early morning hours of Wednesday, September 6th, 2023. Ellen was born on July 28th, 1961 in Marfa, Texas to Paul and Joan Thomas Buren. Ellen attended school in Marfa and Graduated Marfa High School in 1979. She Married the love of her life and best friend, Jimmy "Hammer" Melvin on November 12, 1982. Together they raised three children. Ellen was a stay-at-home mom for many years. She loved sports, she and Hammer followed their children and grandchildren all over the state watching them play sports and show livestock animals. After the kids had grown, she went back to work at Marfa Elementary as an aide where she found more children to nurture. Later she had the opportunity to work for the Marfa Visitor Center and the Alpine Visitor Center where she loved meeting new people from all over the world and sharing her knowledge of the part of Texas she loved. Ellen loved Christmas movies all year round. She enjoyed dancing with her beloved husband every chance she had, cooking for her family, spoiling her grandchildren, and living the simple life in her hometown of Marfa. Ellen is preceded in death by her mother Joan Buren, brothers John Buren, David Buren, and Phillip Buren, brother-in-Law Roy Melvin and nephew Jack Melvin. Survivors include her Husband Hammer, children Barbra Haire (Lynne) of Lubbock, Chester Melvin (Morgan) of Cibolo, Michael Melvin of Marfa, Grandchildren Tyler Melvin, Kristofer Haire, Mathew Melvin, Alexa Haire, Abby Melvin, Rayne Melvin, and Paisley Melvin. She is also Survived by her Father Paul Buren (Brenda Buren) of Whitehorse Yukon, Sisters Katie Sanchez (Fred Shanchez) of San Angelo, Susan Counts (Larry) of San Angelo, and many nieces and nephews. Alfredo A. Soza, an Alpine High School graduate, died in San Antonio on November 30, 2023, at the age of 57. Alfredo accomplished much in his lifetime, earning a degree in Accounting from Sul Ross University in 1989, and a law degree from Texas Tech Law School in 1992. For many years he practiced law in West Texas. Alfredo began his law practice by opening a solo practice immediately after law school in Odessa, Texas where he handled criminal defense, family law, personal injury, commercial litigation and bankruptcy matters. In addition to his service to his clients, Alfredo was dedicated to representing those without the means to hire an attorney. He was awarded the Lifetime Dedication Award by the Ector County Bar Association and Legal Aid of Northwest Texas, "In recognition of providing outstanding Pro Bono Service to the Indigent" on October 28, 2010. In addition to his pro bono service, Alfredo mentored a number of attorneys that currently practice bankruptcy law in the Permian Basin. In 2015, he moved to Alpine to assist with the management of Soza Realty and its investment properties. Alfredo was a self-taught carpenter, mechanic, plumber and electrician. His wickedhumor, encyclopedic knowledge of popular culture, sports, movies and television always made him the go to authority on just about all topics. He enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren as well as hunting, fishing, target shooting, and restoring old cars and trucks. Alfredo is survived by his parents, Robert L. and Evalina Soza, his brother, Robert L. Soza, Jr. , and his wife, Roxanna Gonzales-Soza, his children Felicia Soza-Lowery and her husband, Christian Lowery, Elias Soza and his wife, Isabel Mendez, and Nina Soza as well as his grandchildren Langston and Zora Soza-Lowery. The Rosary Service will be held at Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church at 7:00 p. m. on Friday, December 15, 2023. The Funeral Mass will be at 10:00 a. m. at Our Lady of Peace, on Saturday, December 16, 2023 with burial to follow at Holy Angels Cemetery and reception at Our Lady of Peace Parish Hall. Paz Jurado was called by our Lord on Wednesday, November 29, 2023 at the age of 88 years. Paz was a wife, a mother, a sister, an aunt, a friend, and provider to her grandchildren. She worked as a home healthcare provider. Paz was a long-time member of the St. Mary’s Catholic Church where she served as a member of the church choir, and volunteered for many church activities and services. Paz’s home was always the place for family gatherings. She lived for her children, there was not anything that she would not do for them. She loved to sing and dance. She was known for her orange cakes and banana bread. There was not a dessert she did not love. At one point in her life, she cared for her all grandchildren while her children worked. She always welcomed her grandchildren with open arms. She was a teacher, confidant, a friend, and a recliner companion while watching novellas but above all she was a loving mother. She was much loved and will be missed. She always said, "No, don’t say goodbye, it’s always see you later. " Paz was born in Marfa, Texas to Bartolo and Concha Villanueva on September 6, 1935. Paz married the love of her life, Esteban Jurado; they were married for 70 years. Together they had 6 children, Javier Jurado (Terry), Delia Jurado-Martinez, Danny Jurado (Deceased), Virginia Pallarez (Eddie), David Jurado (Vanessa), and Rachel Cardenas (Johnny). She was a loving grandma to 20 grandchildren, 28 great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. Paz is preceded in death by her husband Esteban Jurado, son, Danny Jurado, grandson, Davis Justin Jurado, granddaughter Monique Justine Jurado, her parents and brothers and sisters. She was the last remaining of 13 siblings. Her beloved grandsons will serve as Pallbearers, they are: Jay Jurado, Jimmy Steve Martinez, Neil Dean Martinez, Robert Espinoza, Patrick Pallarez, Eric Pallarez, Eddie Pallarez Jr. , Travis Jurado, Diego Jurado, and Jaime Cardenas. Her beloved granddaughters will serve as Honorary Pallbearers, they are: Norma Jean Guajardo, Jennifer Bieganski, Lauren Martinez, A. J. Jurado,Liliana Rubi Cardenas, Denise Olazaba, Lori Bojorquez and Kelly Urquidez. On November 28, 2023, Richard Charles Kelly went to be with his Lord and Savior. Rick was 80 years old and from Midland, Texas born on February 19, 1943, in Stockton, California to Harold Francis and Beatrice Marsha Kelly. The family moved to Midland in 1948 where he graduated from Midland High School and in 1965 from Sul Ross University with a BA in History and Government. Rick served in Naval Intelligence during the Vietnam era and was the recipient of the National Defense Service Medal. He became a Brewery Representative for Miller Brewing Company following his service. In 1975, Rick and his business partner acquired Champion Beers of Brazoria County with Rick becoming the General Manager and co-owner. He met and married Bette Bell Morehead in 1976. Parenting three sons, Charles, Clay, and Jeff Morehead. Rick was preceded in death by Charles in 1989. He is survived by his wife Bette, as well as children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. He was grandfather to Drew and wife Shanna, Tasha, Christopher and Jessica Morehead, great-grandchildren Emma Sue and Ethan Morehead, uncle to nephew Robert Kelly, and nieces Kathleen Hernandez and Kristine Kelly. Rick and family relocated to Boerne, Texas in 1981 where he resumed his entrepreneurial endeavors with Car Washes, Storage Units, and property investments while his wife Bette was busy with her own Boutique/Gift Shop. In 1991, Rick became a co-owner and General manager of a Fredericksburg, Texas Beer Distributorship until the fall of 2000. Moving to Alpine, Texas, Rick and Bette acquired Aerflite Auto Rentals now known as Alpine Auto Rental and Sales. Rick was a member of The Ambassadors of Alpine, served as a member on the Big Bend Regional Memorial Hospital Board and an Executive Board Member of Alpine’s Post 79 American Legion. Recipient of many awards throughout his business life with Alpine "Businessperson of the Year" and Sul Ross Sammy Baugh Award, Co-Founder of the 100 Club of Brazoria County, Texas. He was also known for never meeting a stranger and selling many, many fundraising tickets for local civic organizations and all good causes. Rick loved the Constitution of the United States, History and Geography. Above all, he loved his family and friends and was very patriotic and loyal to his country. An old fashion Irish Wake will be held at the American Legion on Saturday, December 2nd from 2-4 pm. A Celebration of Life will be announced in the near future. Antonio Ybarra Villarreal, a beloved husband, father, and retired bus driver, peacefully passed away on November 25, 2023, at the age of 74. Born on December 6, 1948, in Coahuila, Mexico, Antonio's life was filled with love, laughter, and a strong sense of family. Antonio immigrated to the United States and became a proud citizen, devoting over 30 years of his life to the transportation industry as a delivery and bus driver. His dedication and hard work were evident as he safely transported countless passengers throughout his career. Antonio's friendly demeanor, engaging conversations, and caring nature made him a favorite among those who rode his bus. Though Antonio did not attain a formal diploma, his thirst for knowledge never waned. He understood the importance of education and encouraged his loved ones to pursue academic success. Although he faced challenges, Antonio's determination allowed him to provide for his family and leave a lasting impact on their lives. Antonio's enduring spirit and dedication to his loved ones will be forever remembered. While his physical presence may be gone, his legacy lives on in the hearts of all who knew him. Born on November 7, 1946, in Marathon, Texas, Jose was the son of Padlo and Augustina Chavarria. He passed away on his 77th birthday following a peaceful and natural end to his journey. In addition to his professional achievements, he was a combat U. S. Marine and mechanic. Jose cherished the importance of family and community. Jose's warm and generous spirit touched the lives of those around him, making him a cherished friend and companion. Mary Ann Donaldson born March 25, 1937 of 705 N. Kelly, Marfa, TX died in her sleep on October 28, 2023. She was married to Bobby Lee Donaldson, Sr. , ex-mayor and owner of ABC Pump and Hardware of Marfa, who preceded her in death. They lived and worked in the Marfa Community since 1961. Mary Ann, as her friends called her, was manager of the First Savings and Loan in both the Marfa and Alpine branches in the 70s through the 90s. She was a longtime member of the First United Methodist Church since moving here in the 60s. She is preceded in death by her husband, Bobby of Marfa in 2012 and her oldest son, Alan Wayne Donaldson of Chula Vista, CA in 2019. Other members of her family that have passed are her parents, Floyd Herren Fillpot and Thelma Vetula Fillpot of Satanta, KS along with six brothers and three sisters all originally from Kansas. Survivors include one daughter, Cheryl Donaldson-Prausa and two sons, Bobby "Lee" Donaldson, Jr. and Charles "Chuck" Ray Donaldson all of Marfa; five grandchildren, Jeremy Bouska of Raleigh, NC, April Donaldson-Flores and Kelly Donaldson-Evans from the Houston area, Bobby Lee Donaldson, III of Gardendale, TX, and Kaela Marie Donaldson of Marfa, TX; 15 great-grandchildren all of whom lovingly called Mary Ann their "Mimi"; one sister, Carolyn Sue Webber of Satanta, KS; numerous nieces and nephews. Mary Ann was loved and respected by all she came in contact with and she never stopped giving to others, so may our mother, wife, grandma "Mimi", sister and friend – rest in peace with our Father and Son above!
