Ella Elizabeth Wubbena, 85, of Vinton, passed away at her residence, Wednesday, October 4, 2023. Memorial services will be 11:30 a. m. , Wednesday, October 11, 2023 at Van Steenhuyse-Teahen Funeral Home, Vinton, with Chaplain Brian Reeves officiating. Friends may visit with the family from 10:30 a. m. to 11:30 a. m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Private family burial will be held. Ella was born May 23, 1938, in Waterloo, the daughter of Clarence and Clarene (Williams) Frank. She attended grade school in Mt. Auburn and graduated from La Porte City High School. She then attended and graduated from Iowa State Teachers College earning a degree in education. Teaching positions led her to Ackley, Garrison and the Iowa Braille and Sight Saving School in Vinton. On June 2, 1962, Ella was united in marriage to Alvin Wubbena at the American Lutheran Church in La Porte City. After retiring from teaching, Ella embraced her roles as a devoted mother and an active partner on the family farm. Throughout her life, some of Ella's favorite past times were gardening, cooking, going out to eat, playing cards, and spending time with her family and "loving on her grandkids". She was a proud member of Zion Lutheran Church in Dysart. Ella is survived by her four children: Kevin (Beverly) Wubbena of Rogers, AR, Kim (Matt) Siebrands of Altoona, Korey (Jillian) Wubbena of Edmond, OK, and Kristy (Blake) Lorber of Bondurant; seven grandchildren: Blythe, Brayden, Lucas, Ethan, Emma, Kennedy and Parker; two great-grandchildren: Easton and Emberlynn; brother, Cecil (Judy) Frank of La Porte City; and two sisters-in-law: Lena Wubbena and Martha Walters. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Alvin; infant daughter, Mary; brother, Russell; and several other family members. A memorial fund has been established. Shakira Ayoka Jones passed away on Monday, November 27, 2023. She was 20 years old. Shakira was born in Cedar Rapids, Iowa on February 28, 2003. Shakira was fascinated by the world around her and was on her way to graduating from Metro High School in May 2024. She will no longer have the opportunity to pursue her aspirations, but she would like others to seize opportunities that come their way. Shakira's inner and outer beauty appeared to glow from the minute she was born. Anyone who met her fell in love with her right away. While it's easy to fall in love with babies, Shakira's personality became more appealing as she grew older. She was never short of friends who were willing to share her time and energy. Shakira is survived by her mother, Shanequa Dobbins; father, Glynn Jones Jr. ; brothers, Ryan Jones, Paris Jones, Ernest Ross Jr. and John Ross; sisters, LaNeice Jones, Eiaina Williams, and Candice Barns; grandmothers, Georgia Dobbins and Harriett Franklin; and a large number of uncles, aunts, and cousins. Her grandfather, Milton Dobbins, great-grandparents, Marie Swayze, Alverna Franklin, and Sam Franklin, as well as her uncle, Cornelius "Darnell" Henderson, preceded her in death. Sharon Lee (Cooley) Wilson, 76, a loving, kind, and strong woman, passed away peacefully from natural causes on Sunday, November 26, 2023 at Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy. Born on August 21, 1947 in Cedar Rapids to Wilford Cooley and Vera Gatrelle, Sharon was the cherished sister of Melvin, Jane, Ernie, Robin, and Beverly. Sharon was a hard worker, spending much of her career driving semi-trucks and exploring the country. She held various roles, from waitress to chauffeur, always serving with dedication and grace. Sharon's love for her family was evident in her devotion to her children, Scott (Jolene), Nikki (Blair), Martha (Don), and Angela (Ryan); and her grandchildren, Tiffany, Shondra, Toni, Jacob, Drew, and Hayden. She also delighted in her great-grandchildren, Devin, Adrien, Kieran, and Anduin. A lover of wolves and roses, Sharon's collection of wolves and rose items and paintings were a testament to her appreciation of beauty and strength. She was always willing to lend a helping hand, and her unconditional love for those close to her was a lesson she imparted to all who knew her. In accordance with her wishes, there will be no services, but a Celebration of Life will be held to honor Sharon's memory at a later date Her legacy of love, kindness, and strength will continue to live on in the hearts of her family and friends. Charlene Catherine Wolfe passed away on November 24, 2023 at the age of 83. Charlene was born in Santa Ana, California on July 23, 1940. She was raised by her mother Catherine. They moved frequently around the country and lived in several states, including New York, Tennessee, Utah, and Texas. She lived in Dallas during her junior year of high school where she became a Debutante. Then she returned to Los Angeles where she completed her senior year. She attended USC, and later became a hypnotherapist and had a successful private practice. Murray Wolfe was a client of hers. He quickly quit his therapy sessions so he could date her. They married in 1981 and had been married for 34 years at his passing in 2015. Murray and Charlene had a wonderful and colorful life together. They enjoyed traveling, theatre, classical and jazz concerts, collecting art, books, antiques, and many friends. Charlene was an avid reader, gardener, gourmet cook, and quilter. Later in life, Charlene and Murray made the decision to leave Los Angeles and retire in Cedar Rapids where they purchased and remodeled a beautiful home and lived the most peaceful and happiest years of their lives. Charlene was preceded in death by her husband Murray Wolfe, her parents, and her sister. Steven A. Yuza, 79, of Cedar Rapids passed away peacefully of natural causes on November 28, 2023. Services will be held at St. George Orthodox Church with visitation on Sunday, December 3 from 4-7 p. m and funeral held Monday, December 4 at 10 a. m. Steve was born June 4, 1944 in Cedar Rapids to Arnold and Margo (Huff) Yuza. He was a 1962 graduate of Jefferson High School before continuing his education at Upper Iowa University, graduating in 1967, Northeast Missouri State University (now Truman State University), graduating in 1971 as well as the University of Iowa, graduating in 1985. He then began his career as a science teacher, retiring from Cedar Rapids Prairie in 2002 after 35 years. During this time he also coached high school baseball and junior high basketball. After retirement, Steve worked at Cedar Rapids Toyota as a shuttle driver. In 1968, Steve was united in marriage to Linda David and their marriage was blessed with two children, Kelly and Chad. He was a devoted father and grandfather and enjoyed attending his grandchildren's sporting events. For many years the family would go to Wisconsin Dell's and always looked forward to the trips. Steve loved to go to the casinos, including an annual guys trip to Las Vegas with his son, Chad and other relatives. He was an avid New York Yankees fan, especially #7 Mickey Mantle and played many years of slow-pitch softball. He enjoyed traveling to car shows. Steve's favorite foods were Maid-rite's, Pagliai's and kolaches. He thoroughly enjoyed his "grand-dog" Yogi, spoiling him with treats and toys. Steve ran into someone he knew everywhere he went and always knew their whole life story before they parted. He especially loved meeting with past students and catching up on their life stories. He was a dedicated and active member of St. George Orthodox Church. Those left to cherish Steve's memory are his wife of 55 years, Linda; children Kelly (Dean) Sachtschale of Cedar Rapids, and Chad (Tara) Yuza of Minneapolis; and grandchildren Austin Sachtschale and Madison and Zach Yuza as well as nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents Arnold and Margo. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to St. George Orthodox Church. Julia Thomsen Ary Primrose, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, passed onto heaven on Tuesday, November 21, 2023, at the age of 102 years old. Julia is now peacefully at rest, buried next to Ezra in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. The family will gather to remember and celebrate her life, privately at a later date. Our Family offer thanks and love to everyone that shared in Julia's long life and please leave any remembrances for the family in the response section. Julia was born on July 12, 1921, on a farm near Mount Auburn, Iowa to Harry and Julia Thomsen. She had one sibling, an older sister Edna Thomsen (Deerfield). Julia graduated from High School in Mt. Auburn in 1938. She married Ezra Ary on April 14, 1940, in Waterloo, Iowa. Both Julia and Ezra were children of the Depression, and both shared a strong work ethic. When first married, they both worked at a poultry processer in Vinton, and their first home was a converted chicken coop with a dirt floor. Together they set a shared goal to save enough money to move to a home with a real floor, which they both accomplished through working multiple full and part-time jobs, before their first child arrived in 1941. Julia and Ezra later moved to Cedar Rapids for better employment and Julia then worked for nearly forty years for Collins/Rockwell, retiring at the maximum allowable age of 70. She enjoyed large gardens at their homes in Cedar Rapids and Alburnett, as well as listening to country music, watching westerns, and playing cards. Julia and Ezra also enjoyed traveling to rodeos in their Winnebago bus throughout the US and Canada prior to retirement. They also enjoyed trips to the Grand Ole Opry and visiting National Parks across the country. After retiring they were able to spend several winters relaxing with friends in Lake Wales, Florida. Julia loved the companionship of six miniature poodles throughout her life, but she only had one cat. Julia and Ezra enjoyed 49 years of marriage until Ezra succumbed to Alzheimer's disease in 1989. Several years later, Julia married friend Bill Primrose Sr. on April 15, 1995, and they enjoyed life together until Bill passed away on June 10, 2010. Julia remained active and lived independently in her own home until the age of 89 and maintained her Iowa Driver's License until age 94. Julia was a prolific reader right up to her death enjoying her daily Gazette newspaper as well as novels. She enjoyed several years of independent living at Village Place and Willow Gardens in Marion, before resettling to Corridor Crossing Place in Cedar Rapids. Julia enjoyed the friendships that she shared in her later years with Friend Tom Pellitier and his family, as well as Friend Leroy Powelka and his family. Julia's Family wishes to express our loving gratitude for all the Care Givers and Staff that cared for our cherished Matriarch at these locations. Julia loved all of them and enjoyed sharing their frequent hugs. Julia and Ezra had two daughters and they live on to cherish her life; Patricia Ary Garrett (Gilbert), and Carol Ary Cooper-Covington (Brian); six grandchildren, Geoffrey Garrett (Christine), Gjason Garrett (Robyn), Brian Cooper, Mathew Cooper (Stevi), Stephanie Cooper Bingham (Farrell), and Jonathan Cooper (Lotta); ten great-grandchildren, Heidi McKillip (Mike), Amanda Somers-Lopez (Mark), Sydney Garrett, Tora Cooper, Meya Cooper, Carsyn Cooper, Landyn Cooper, Jordyn Cooper, Cayden Bingham, and Kayla Bingham; three great-great-grandchildren, Trinity McKillip (Scott Eicher), Rosemary McKillip, and Aaron Wallen; two great-great-great-grandchildren, Sarah & Ella Eicher (twins born in 2022). Burial with military and police honors will be held at Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery, Cedar Rapids. John was born June 2, 1949, in Cedar Rapids, the son of Wilson and Jane (Baird) Jones. He graduated from Jefferson High School in 1967, and Southwestern College in San Diego, California. He served his country honorably in the United States Navy from 1967 - 1971. John was united in marriage to Sandy in Cedar Rapids in 1969. He dedicated 34 years to the Cedar Rapids Police Department where he worked as a helicopter pilot and patrol training officer. After his retirement in 2014, he became a member of the American Legion in Palo, Iowa. John was a model train enthusiast. He enjoyed watching the Chicago Bears, Cubs, and the Iowa State Cyclones. John also liked watching stock cars, NASCAR, and Formula 1 racing. He was a very active grandpa who was always involved with his grandchildren's events. John was dearly loved, and he will be missed tremendously. Larry was born April 15, 1941, in Cedar Rapids, the son of Dale and Maxine (McClain) Verbick. He graduated from Jefferson High School and attended Simpson College. Larry was united in marriage to Janet McCreedy on May 23, 1992, in Cedar Rapids. He worked for the Cedar Rapids Community School District for 28 years, until retiring in 2010. Larry was a Hawkeye sports and Chicago Cubs fanatic. He was a member of the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union where he continued his love of sports as a dedicated umpire for 45 years. Larry was one in a million. He was a remarkable man who was loved by everyone he met, and his joy and humor will be dearly missed.
