Remembered With Love Verna Wong (Bao Zhu) passed away at St. Boniface Hospital in Winnipeg, Manitoba, at age 47 after a 4-year battle with heart complications, surrounded by family. She is survived by her fiance, Dana, and her son Alex (Noelle), mother, Mei-Yin (Lim Dip), sister Jady (Dastin), brother Eric (Katie), niece Ezara and nephews Kyler and Jace. Born at Grace Hospital in Winnipeg, Manitoba on February 17, 1976, Verna made Winnipeg her home base while she ventured to faraway places like Jamaica, Paris, the Dominican Republic, and China. She enjoyed long drives and made trips to Edmonton to visit family and Minneapolis to shop for gifts for those she loved. While she enjoyed traveling, her active social life kept her strongly tied to the province. Verna prioritized spending time with her son Alex and her childhood friends and their families, often attending dinner parties or movie nights. During the summer, she could be found lazing on the beach, or fishing off a boat on Nutimik Lake, or the banks of the Red River at Lockport. Verna graduated from Sisler High School and received training as a legal assistant at Herzing College. After working in law offices, she transitioned to the banking industry as financial account manager at Assiniboine Credit Union. Assisting colleagues and forging friendships outside of work was in her nature, and that authentic kindness was not lost on Dana, who proposed to her in 2022. She is survived by her great-aunt Sui Yip Mah (Yun Sen); aunts, Lily (Gord) and Betty (Wing Lee), and her uncles Paul (Judy), Stanley (Irene), and Michael (Wai); her cousins, Nancy (Curtis), Norton (Margie), Peter (Jonalyn), Wilma (Lewis), Wanda (Raymond), Bobby (Pauline), Larry, Pam (Mark), Wendy, Leslie (Melvin), Linda, Nikki, Heidi, Max, Charmaine, Cory, Valentina, Victor, Joanne, Bond, and Flora; and godchildren, Hayden, Carter, Kiara, Ronin, Ryder, Mason, Tristen, and Juliana. Verna cared for people and animals with her generous nature and kind heart. She was a friend to all, and her memory will be cherished by those who knew her. Nothing could ever replace the beauty of her essence. Thank you to all the staff at the Acute Cardiac Care Unit at St. Boniface Hospital for the attention and care they provided. Donald Myrvold

Age - 91

December 11, 2023

Donald Peter Myrvold, 91, passed peacefully in his sleep on December 03, 2023 after a long illness. He will be missed by his children Barbara, Barry (Anastasia), Laurene, and grandson Leland. He was predeceased by his wife, Esther (Overland), and his brothers Charles and Kenneth. Don loved travelling, the stock market, reading, and reminiscing about the good times they had in Flin Flon. Our parents started out in Flin Flon with Pa working at the Hudson Bay Mining and Smelting (HBMS). There they had their twins - Barbara and Barry. They then moved to Aurora Minnesota so Pa could finish his accreditation. Back to Flin Flon, then Snow Lake where their third child Laurene was born. From there Pa worked in many minds gathering knowledge and a good reputation in his field. He worked in potash mines- Bredenbury, Lanigan, Saskatoon x2. He didn't like either tar sands - Fort McMurray, Alberta or coal mines - Sparwood, BC. He knew many people, mostly from Flin Flon, who now worked in international mines. Through them and his reputation he was offered a position in the Dominican Republic and we insisted that we go. Once the last child had been settled, our parents moved to Honduras but it ended up being too hot both physically and politically. From there Cuajones Peru and worked in the copper mine there for ten years before their grandson was born. He then retired in Winnipeg. He lived his retirement peacefully with most of his family close by. Our thanks to the staff of Middle Church Nursing Home for the kind and gentle care he received throughout his stay. A celebration of his life will be held in the summer.Show more

Jennie Sherman

Age - 96

December 11, 2023

November 12, 1926- December 9, 2023 Jennie died peacefully at St. Boniface Hospital on December 9, 2023. She will be lovingly remembered by her daughter Diane( Harvey), grandsons Mark, Ryan and Scott(Bobbi) and 2 great grandchildren, Avery and Tyler. Mom will also be in the hearts of her siblings, Ray (Lorna), Mildred, Fran (Curly), Vicky, John, Irene (Brian), Stan (Kathy), sister- in-law Rachel and many nieces and nephews. Mom was predeceased by my dad in April 2003, after celebrating 55 years of marriage, parents Stephan and Dokia, sisters Marge, Stephy and Sylvia and brother Walter. Mom was born in Senkiw, MB in 1926. After spending her childhood years on the farm, she moved to Winnipeg to finish high school. At 15 years of age, she was seconded to teach school as there was a shortage of teachers at the time. She spent 3 years in The Fisher Branch area, living with local families that billeted her. Then she returned to Winnipeg for employment and met Steve, her soon to be husband. They were married in 1948. While working at Zellers, her duties were to make the bank deposits everyday. One day, while making a deposit at the local Bank of Montreal, she was offered a job, that she gladly accepted. She spent 32 years at BMO and always loved her work. She was always grateful for her career in banking as she was able to progress into management roles. This was groundbreaking for the time. Her decision to retire at 57 also encouraged Dad to retire as well. Together they had many years of travel, camping and living life to the fullest, with family and friends. Mom's most memorable years were her winter vacations in Florida, Hawaii and Texas. After dad's passing, she continued to join Harvey and I every winter, as she wasn't about to stay home. She loved it there and talked about it until her final days. Mom did her Ukrainian heritage proud. Her and dad were members of the Blessed Virgin Mary parish since 1952 and always played an active role in church activities. Mom joined the Ukrainian Catholic Women's League and celebrated 64 years in the organization. She served at the highest level when she became the National President from 1989-1992. She never shied away from leadership roles or anything that was asked of her. She was a great role model for me throughout my life. After dad's passing, she moved to Holy Family Towers, where she resided for 12 years. She loved it very much, as it was full of friends and acquaintances. She volunteered at the nursing home until she was 90 and still drove her car. Harvey says she was the best mother-in-law and our children still talk about the great memories they made with grandma and grandpa. What more can be said about a great lady. We love you and will miss you everyday. Funeral Liturgy will be celebrated on Monday, December 18 at 10:00 a. m. at Blessed Virgin Mary Parish, 965 Boyd Avenue. Interment to follow in Holy Family Cemetery. Donations in memory of Jennie can be made to BVM Parish, 965 Boyd Ave. Winnipeg, MB or St. Boniface Hospital Foundation.Show more

Betty Anderson

Betty Anderson

Age - 94

December 10, 2023

With fond memories, an overwhelming sense of loss, and great sadness, we announce the passing of Betty Ruth Anderson on November 27th, 2023 (Winnipeg, Manitoba). To others, she was an adventurer, traveler, teacher, mentor, and friend. To her family, she was our matriarch, a beloved mother, nana and great nana - the epitome of love, support, caring, compassion, and kindness. Betty was born on September 24, 1929 in Chicago, Illinois, and spent her formative years living in what is now known as Tanzania. Growing up in the shadow of Mount Kilimanjaro, Betty would receive regular presents from her "Uncles" Kibo, Mawenzi, and Shira. She loved to both sing and dance as a child and dreamed of one day becoming a prima ballerina. At the age of 17, Betty moved back to the United States to attend Gustavus Adolphus College where she met her first love (Neil), graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree and started a family. Eventually making her way to Kenora, Ontario she started her teaching career as a high school English teacher (she taught History and German as well) and became Head of the Guidance Department at Beaver Brae Secondary School. This is where she found her true calling, serving as an advocate for those who were most vulnerable. She will be remembered as a petite yet incredibly strong woman, full of vitality with a passion for life, her family and friends. She adventured all over the world from a young age, a passion that continued well into her late 80's. She also loved spending time on "Little Crow Rock" island (Lake of the Woods), playing bridge with her friends and family, and mentoring her students long after they had graduated from school. Betty was pre-deceased by her devoted husband Bert Oussoren, her beloved son Richard (Rick), her parents (Richard & Elveda), and cherished sister Dagmar. Betty will be greatly missed by her children Cyrena, Neil, Mark (Carmen), Lisa, her daughter-in-law Dianne and sister Ingrid as well as her ten amazing grandchildren, Syrena, Kendra, Ayoka, Joseph, Ben, Hannah, Alexis, Katelyn, Dagmar and Madelaine, nine great grandchildren, Lily, Markus, Violet, Grayson, Noah, Mila, Huckleberry, Malin, Penelope and her second family Sean (Jackie, Owen, Leo) and Trevor (Kylie, Jonah, Nolan). While her song may have ended, the melody lives on and when we close our eyes we can see Betty singing and dancing with those that passed before her and have waited patiently for her arrival. We love and miss you mom! In lieu of flowers, the family would greatly appreciate donations being made in her name to the Alzheimer's Society of Manitoba. (https://alzheimer. mb. ca/)Show more

Irene Dutiaume

Irene Dutiaume

Age - 73

December 9, 2023

Irene Elizabeth Dutiaume It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Irene Elizabeth Dutiaume (nee Forbes), 73, of Winnipeg, on the 3rd of December 2023 after a lengthy battle with illness with her loving husband by her side. Irene was born on the 19th August 1950 to Leonard and Margaret Forbes. The middle of three children, she grew up in a happy home. Irene attended Varennes Elementary School and followed on to graduate from Glenlawn High School where she not only made and forged friendships that would last a lifetime but would also meet Richard, who she would later go on to marry. Irene married Richard Dutiaume on the 21st November 1970 and together they had two children, Todd and Mark. After welcoming Todd in 1973 Irene decided to dedicate her life to being a mother. Irene was fun, caring and was the bedrock of the family. She always knew the right thing to say, never missed a special date, and fully immersed herself in her family's interests. Whether it was supporting her boys in their sporting interests or being a constant in their school and community lives. The Hockey rink became a central place in the family's life and what started out at the local community centre, soon became provincial, national and eventually international which led to countless adventures and many of her valued memories. Her annual pilgrimages to the United Kingdom to watch her boys play hockey, which began as a week or two, eventually grew into months. Under the guise of escaping the cold winters, she immersed herself into a Scottish community that embraced her, and even after a long absence, is still asked for on a daily basis. Betula Lake was a place of refuge and time away from the city for Irene. Spending entire summers there as a child, it became generational as she continued to spend parts of the summers with her family and eventually grandchildren. Precious times that were never taken for granted and always cherished. Extended family was extremely important to Irene, a fountain of knowledge when it came to remembering important dates, birthdays and anniversaries. But of course, it went much deeper, she craved to know about the lives of her siblings, aunts, uncles, beloved nieces, nephews and wonderful in-laws and took joy in their happiness and successes. The love she gave was returned ten-fold her entire life and in her time of need her family and closest friends did whatever was required and more. Her Sister in law, Arlene was a wonderful health advocate during her period of illness. In 1994, Irene made the decision that she would return to the full-time workforce. She became an Analyst at Canada Post. It opened a whole new world to her, and not only did she take great pride in her work, she once again built friendships that would stand the test of time. Irene was blessed with such wonderful friendships. Whether it was lunches with her childhood friends Gail and Sheila, conspiring with Chris, or trying something new and exciting with Sheila Bruce. Irene was always up for an adventure and could always be found sleeping contently in the back seat while Rick and Larry drove the girls to their next destination. Irene was extremely close with her mother, the two became inseparable later in Margarets life. Her mother's memory never far from mind, Irene spoke about her with great love and admiration until the end of her own life. It gave her great pleasure to have both her mother and mother-in-law Mabel over for dinner. Often both talking about completely different things to each other at the same time over a dinner that she had made for them. Grandchildren became the central focus in her life beginning in 2008 with the arrival of Olivia, followed by Kian in 2012 and Isla in 2014. Each an example of perfection in her eyes they filled her with a tremendous sense of pride. Quality and quantity were in abundance and every opportunity to spend time was seized. In 2014, Robyn joined the family and completed her heart. After 53 years of marriage Irene would often 'jokingly' exclaim that had she done it right she would have been free after 25 years. It was a strong partnership and together they navigated building a life; they grew up together, celebrated, weathered tragedy, grew old alongside one another and ultimately lived, without pretence and immensely proud of their roots. In the end, Rick was by her side as she drew her final breath as he always had been. Irene is survived by her husband Rick, her two loving sons, Todd (Susan) and Mark (Kelly) and her grandchildren Olivia, Kian, Isla and Robyn. A celebration of life will be held on Wednesday, December 13th at 2:00 PM at Green Acres Funeral Home and Cemetery, with reception and a private family interment to follow.Show more
