Anthony Andruskevich
Age - 96
December 5, 2023
Scranton lost a true gem on Dec. 2, 2023 when Anthony Andrew Andruskevich passed on to a better place after an extended illness. Tony, to those who knew him, was 96 and a lifetime native of Scranton. He was a distinguished professional engineer, community leader, a World War II veteran and was a generous man with many musical talents who loved to perform for family and friends. A loving husband, father and grandfather, he was, above all, a most precious gift to those who knew him well and loved him. His recent wife, the former Anna Mae Hutchey, died in 2022 at the age of 90 while his first wife, Delores Ann DeMario, died in 1981, at the age of 55. He was the son of the late Adam and Anna Andruskevich and was the last living survivor of his four siblings and stepsiblings. Sadly, he suffered great loss while living including his daughter, Carol, and two grandchildren, Alexis and Mark Anthony, all at very young ages. Tony, a devout Catholic, was a member of St. Joseph's Lithuanian Church and, later, Mary, Mother of God Parish at Holy Rosary Church. He was a member of the St. Joseph's choir, president of the Holy Name Society and Bowling League, and was active in all church activities. He was a life member of the Knights of Columbus, Fourth Degree, Assembly 938 of Scranton. Educated in the Scranton School District, he graduated from Johnson School, currently Johnson College, the Army Engineer School of Belvoir, Va. and attended Penn State University. He was a World War II veteran serving in the Pacific Theatre. Tony was a member of the VFW Hyde Park Memorial Post 6528 and the American Legion Post 920. Andruskevich was a member of both the National and Pennsylvania Societies of Professional Engineers. Prior to his retirement he was associated with Albert E. Peter's Associates and Peter's Design Group, local architectural and engineering firms. He was a member of the City of Scranton Building Appeals Board and served under Mayors Peters, Walsh and Hickey, serving with pride and distinction for the betterment of the community of Scranton. Tony was also a gentle social activist in the city of Scranton and brought many important community project needs to the attention of local politicians. In a recent personal video message from Gov. Josh Shapiro, he was lauded and thanked for his community efforts. During his long tenure with the AARP Scranton Chapter 3731, Tony served as president, vice president and as a director, and was a member of the AARP choral group that entertained at nursing homes and senior citizen centers. He also attained life membership status in the Taurus Club, St. Stephen's Booster Club and Polish Citizens Progressive Club. Tony was past president of the Lithuanian Bowling League and a member of St. Stephen's Bowling League, loved to play golf and was a truly avid New York Yankees fan. Among Tony's many talents was his ability to entertain his friends and loved ones. He was a talented musician with a wonderful voice. In his younger years Tony enjoyed playing in a professional band and in his later years loved singing in the St Joseph's Church choir, performing at AARP events, singing Christmas carols at nursing homes and, more recently when he was ill, serenading his caregivers, nurses, friends and family. At age 96, many were surprised by his beautiful voice and his ability to play the harmonica. The first verse of one of his favorite songs was "when you're smiling, when you're smiling, the whole world smiles with you. . . . " That song, and many like it, brought a warm, lovely smile to his face and those who were fortunate enough to listen whenever he sang. He will always be remembered for his beautiful, warm, friendly smile and the thousands of smiles he brought to others!Tony was a wonderful man: kind, thoughtful and entertaining to everyone. He will be missed sorely by family and friends. Surviving Tony are his son, Thomas A. Andruskevich and wife, Suzanne McMillan; his grandson, Alexander T. Andruskevich, all of Palm Beach, Florida; and many nieces and nephews. The funeral will be conducted Thursday from the Solfanelli-Fiorillo Funeral Home Inc. , 1030 N.
