It is with profound sadness the family of the late Melissa Monette announce her unexpected passing in Canora, SK, on November 30, 2023, at the young age of 39. Melissa was born in Regina, SK, on June 26, 1984, to Rod and Geri (Rakochy) Petrychyn. The youngest of three siblings, she grew up and spent most of her life in Canora. Melissa attended and graduated from Canora Composite school. Following graduation, Melissa relocated and worked in various locations. Eventually in the summer of 2006, she settled in Yorkton when she met the love of her life, Ryan Monette. They happily married September 12, 2009, and in August of 2010 they welcomed their daughter, Aubrie, into the world. Ryan, Melissa, and Aubrie chose Canora as their forever home where Melissa began her CIBC career. She loved her family and friends fiercely and whole heartedly; to say she had the biggest heart is an understatement. Her fearless authenticity, personality, and sense of humour was one of a kind. Her dedication was most evident in her greatest achievement, her beautiful daughter, Aubrie, and loving husband, Ryan. Every stride Aubrie makes and every smile that graces Ryan's face is a tribute to the remarkable woman Melissa was. Melissa had a genuine love for spending time with her cherished family and friends. She cared for everyone in her unique way with her actions always speaking louder than her words. Her love for connection and gathering us all close by while playing cards, quadding, sledding, or just simply relaxing at their family cabin were some of her favorite things to do and would remind us of what truly mattered. Melissa's passion, bordering on obsession, was Elvis everything! Her ultimate dream came true when Ryan and her traveled to Graceland in January 2023. If her life was a song, it was a passionate ballad of Elvis filled with an unmatched dedication to those she held dear. Let us remember her as someone who poured out love to her world and received it back tenfold. Melissa was loved and predeceased by her grandparents, John Petrychyn and Peter and Agnes Rakochy. She will be lovingly remembered and profoundly missed by her husband, Ryan Monette; daughter, Aubrie Monette; parents, Rod and Geri Petrychyn; brother, Chad (Joni) Petrychyn; and sister, Amanda (Matthew) Thompson; father and mother-in-law, Bruce and Colleen Monette; sisters-in-law, Lisa Monette (Luc Laplante) and Kayla (Dallas) Elliott; and brother-in-law, Curtis (Stephanie) Monette; her nephews, Sawyer and Lucas Thompson and Liam and Mason Lapante; and her nieces, Jessica Petrychyn, Maelia Laplante, Lola Monette, and Claire and Addison Elliott; as well as her extended family and many friends. In Melissa's honour, a Memorial Mass will be held at 11:00 a. m. , Friday, December 8, 2023, from St. Joseph's Roman Catholic Church, Canora, SK, with Rev. Fr. Joseph Kuruvilla as celebrant. Phyllis Derkach

Age - 77

Phyllis was born at the Canora Union Hospital, Canora, SK, on December 3, 1945. She attended elementary school in Arabella and high school in Norquay, SK. On August 18, 1962, Phyllis married Mervin Derkach at Hyas, SK. She farmed with her husband in the Danbury district for seven years, prior to their moved to Toronto, ON, where Phyllis worked in a factory, named Gabriel, making shock absorbers. After 3 years, her son and daughter didn't like the city, so the family returned to Norquay, which was closer to the land that they owned. Phyllis worked at several businesses, but banking and financial positions were her main occupations. She also ran a business with her son and was active with the farming, logging, and within the many ventures that her son owned and operated. She was active with sports and supported the many activities of her children and grandchildren. Additionally, for many years, she was the president of St. Peter and Paul Ukrainian Greek Orthodox Church in Norquay. Phyllis's passion was her family, and her greatest moments were when her children were born. She cherished each and every moment they spent with her. She also adored and was so proud of her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Life's greatest moments include their births and then every cherished minute they were around her. She did anything possible for them all. Her biggest regret was not being able to be there all the time for her children when they were growing up, because she was always working. She worked hard all her life to make their house a home. She will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved her. Phyllis was predeceased by her parents, Fred and Sophia; husband, Mervin; and her brother, Wesley. She is survived by her son, Tim (Renia) Derkach; her daughter, Tammy Derkach; five grandchildren: Tyson, Rhea (Blake), Richele (Riley), Terri (Brayden), and Trudy; four great-grandchildren: Carmen, Carly, Theo, and Bryson; and her sister, Rose (Carl) Holinaty; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends. In Phyllis's honour, a Prayer Service will be held at 7:00 p. m. , Monday, December 4, 2023, and the Funeral Service at 10:00 a. m. , Tuesday, December 5, 2023, both from the Chapel of Leson's Funeral Home, Canora, SK, with Rev. Fr. Michael Faryna officiating. Interment will follow in the Canora Cemetery, Canora, SK. Agnes Hansen

Age - 94

With sadness, the family of the late Agnes Hansen, announce her passing at the Norquay Health Centre on November 24, 2023, at the age of 94 years. Agnes was born February 21, 1929, on the Johnson homestead to Lars and Laura (Fischer) Johnson. She was one of nine children including Oriole, Gilbert, Helen, Olive, Lars, Albert, Orville, and Norman. Her only surviving sibling is Gilbert who resides in Winnipeg and will be celebrating his 99th birthday at the end of the year. Agnes said many times that she just had to live longer than Gilbert, but at 94 years and 9 months she left her earthly home. Growing up, Agnes attended and excelled at Swan School. She helped out on the family farm, which had an impressive herd of Holsteins, of which 14 of them were milked morning and night. She had fond memories of her and her mom singing hymns at the top of their lungs while milking, and there was always a line of cats waiting to have milk squirted into their eager mouths. On rainy days, the two of them could be found in the attic going through old letters written to Laura by her dad, Fredrick Fischer. Being that Laura was a midwife and helped prepare bodies for funerals, the girls were often left to prepare the meals, feed the chickens, and of course milk those cows. It seemed the brothers thought those chores were beneath them. Agnes met Walter Hansen shortly after his return from WW2 and in July 1947 the two were married. They were blessed with Laura, Wallace (passed away at 13 years old), Dale and Lars (passed away at 64 years old). The most retold stories from their childhood was when Laura at the age of 2, under the not so careful supervision of her father, fell through the hole in the hayloft into the manger of a very surprised cow, when Dale at the age of 4 was caught smoking and had to receive a serious talk on the swing set, when Wallace at the age of 9 brought home a shoebox filled with snakes that was later discovered in a closet, and when Lars at the age of 4 was chosen to be sent out in a winter storm to pick up milk from the store because he was smaller and closer to the ground. From the age of 5 years, Agnes started knitting and crocheting which always gave her extra spending money and a real source of pleasure. Even when she would go visiting, that bag of yarn and needles followed her. As kids, the table and sofa held all that yarn and her favorite question whenever we went some place was "could you pick me up some yarn?" Sometimes we would sneak into the city and never tell her, as looking for a certain brand was time-consuming. Each year she knitted slippers for the grade two classes in Norquay and Wetaskiwin, where her oldest granddaughter was teaching. When she went to the Norquay Lodge in 2019 she made even more slippers saying, "when I die I need to make sure those grade 2 kids have slippers!" She left behind 90 pairs to be handed out. Agnes was always described as a hard-working person when growing up, which was valued as an important character trait to have. So, it only seems fitting to mention her jobs: clerk at the Norquay Drug Store, janitor at the Norquay School and Credit Union, presser at Saskatoon Dry Cleaners, maintenance & cook for the Department of Natural Resources. She also owned and operated several small businesses including the Dari Dip and A&L Catering. When Walter died in 1970, she purchased the Dari Dip and shared numerous fond memories with the many people who supported her. One day an adult came for his usual cone and remarked that it tasted funny. Her quick reply was, "did you brush your teeth today?" Another time a teacher asked her to put more ice cream in the cone, her reply, "I don't tell you how to teach, so don't tell me how to make an ice cream cone. "She was a proud grandmother to Lorin, Laurie, Chrystal, Lyle, Lars, and Gordon, great grandmother to Christopher, Mark, Leif, Lauren, Reagan, and Kenna, and great great grandmother to Ezra and Chloe providing endless love and support to all! This took the form of delivering delicious cakes to school shaped likes bunnies or elves (without the fancy cake pans they have now), buying sporting goods or the "newest" fashions, buying numerous tickets for all the different fundraisers (she once bought 12 magazine subscriptions), providing money for gas, groceries, and rent during university and all of the other important milestones and events in their lives. If ever there was a need, they simply had to call Grandma. Most importantly, she kept track of everyone, calling frequently, listening attentively, sharing funny stories from her past and being an important part of all of their lives! Grandma was the "glue" that kept the family together!Agnes will be dearly missed, however, her love of family, her amazing sense of humor, her cooking tips, her love of cards, the songs we shared, and her stories will live on in those of us whose lives she has forever touched. John Fehr

Age - 96

John Fehr passed away peacefully on November 14th, 2023 at the age of 96 at the Canora Gateway Lodge. His battle with serious medical issues in recent weeks showed his courage in facing life challenges with a smile on his face. Despite the pain, John came out a hero and stayed strong until the very end. John was born on July 25th, 1927 to Isaak and Anna Fehr in Durango, Mexico, where he was the fourth of five children (Isaac,George, Helen and Ann) John left home at a very young age to make a life for himself. From working for a farmer, to building highways (including the Canora highway), to working on the CN until 1968. When he went to B. C. to work on the highways there until his retirement in 1988. He also had a few odd jobs in between which included driving truck in the mountains as well as working at the saw mill up in Reserve, Saskatchewan. John married Emma Story and started his family with six beautiful children, Barbara, Kathy, Shelly, Jim, Christine and Johnny. He later remarried Vivian and together they raised both their children (Mitch, Robin, Greg, Kenny, Perry and Rae) and eventually had one child together, Chuck. John had a great love for music, whether it be dancing up a storm at every opportunity he could or his passion for playing instruments. He was highly skilled at many but most would remember him and his guitar, and he was very proud that he was completely self taught just by listening to the notes he learned how to strum. John had the kindest soul and the best manners. Even in his final days he would always say please and thank you, and you couldn't help but notice his genuine love and respect for people. John truly was the most loving father, grandfather, husband, brother, friend and everything in between. Along with his heart came his quirky sense of humor and jokes that could make anyone smile. John had alot of passions in life, when he retired and moved to Canora Beach, lake life soon because another one. Sharing his love for fishing with many. He would come home after a successful day of catching and head to the basement to clean the fish on the deep freeze next to the cellar that was full of his homemade wine. He was so good at what he did you would never find a bone in his filets. He would then stash his catch in the freezer and stock up, obviously over his limit, but he needed enough to enjoy the large family gatherings he loved to have and do a fish fry for everyone. John loved so many things in life, his wrestling, games like Ola and the nickel game, he was an excellent shuffleboard player and would show off his medals any chance he got, he loved his baby duck, French vanilla, fritters, and of course ham and pineapple pizza that he figured should be at least a once a month occurrence, but most of all he loved his family. John has left an incredible legacy for his children, numerous grandchildren and great grandchildten to carry forward. He had a huge family and genuinely cared deeply for each and every one. His homes were proof with the hundreds of photos he had plastered on all the walls. Not sure how he kept making room for more pictures but he always did. John did not want anyone to mourn his life at a funeral, so to honor his wishes we will hold a celebration of his life in the spring. Anyone who knew him is invited to join. Effie Pretchuk

Effie Pretchuk of Canora and formerly of Buchanan, SK, passed away at the Canora Gateway Lodge on October 25, 2023, at the age of 99 years. Effie was born on December 19, 1923, to Wasyl and Anna (nee Yakymishen) Prietchuk in the Rama District, SK. She received her education from Main Road School, a small country school near Rama, SK. At a young age, she battled rheumatic fever which left her with ongoing challenges that she needed to overcome in time. Over the years, Effie had lived in varied places including Rama, SK, Winnipeg, MB, Toronto, ON, Vancouver, BC, and Buchanan, SK, prior to becoming a resident of the Canora Gateway Lodge, Canora, SK. Her occupations provided many opportunities throughout her life as she worked as a Colporter with the Seventh Day Adventist Church in Saskatchewan, a Liaison Worker in Toronto, ON, a Care Aide in Vancouver, a Salesclerk in Winnipeg, and an Art Show/Event Planner for family celebrations in Buchanan. In addition to being the primary caregiver to her mother for over 40 years, Effie was also a dedicated member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church and devoted her time and efforts in missionaries abroad as well as by volunteering in nursing homes where she organized and presented musical programs of faith. Her biggest joy came from connecting with others, writing letters to keep in touch with family, caring for others, connecting with her prayer group, and of course, spreading the Word of her faith and her church. Effie was fluent in English and Ukrainian. She was also a great cook who often used healthy, natural ingredients mostly from her bountiful vegetable garden. She made her own bread, perogies, borscht, and her infamous homemade sauerkraut up until the age of 94, again using most ingredients from her own garden. She was also known for her beautiful flower garden and blooms which she would use to make floral table decorations for the nursing home programs. A self-taught musician, Effie learned to play the piano, guitar, violin, harmonica, organ, and cello and went on to share her gospel music with others. Admirably, she continued to perform later in life, despite her progressing blindness and deafness. Effie was a wonderful storyteller, loved to laugh, and had a unique sense of humour. She enjoyed pulling pranks, especially on her brother, John. In her spare time, she loved to watch the daily shows, Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy, and she loved to sing. Her work, dedication, and involvement in the Seventh Day Adventist Church, the local nursing homes, and the community is greatly appreciated, and Effie will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved her. Effie was predeceased by her parents: Wasyl and Anna; her stepfather, Steve Bodnarchuk; sisters: Patricia, Elizabeth, Mary, Pauline, Helen, and Eunice; and brothers, Henry and Mike. She is survived by her sister, Martha Prytula of Victoria, BC; and her brother, John Prietchuk of Buchanan, SK; as well as numerous loving nieces and nephews who live in many parts of the country. A Memorial Service will be held at 10:30 a. m. , Monday, November 6, 2023, from the Chapel of Leson's Funeral Home, Canora, SK with Pastor Roy Jamieson officiating. Interment will follow in the Canora Cemetery, Canora, SK. Those wishing to make expressions of sympathy may make donations to the Seventh Day Adventist Church, in memory of Effie Pretchuk.
