Joseph Nicholas

Age - 40

December 6, 2023

In loving memory of Joey "Joseph" Nicholas who passed away peacefully in his sleep in the early morning of November 30, 2023, at the young age of 40. Joey was born on Long Island, NY. He met his wife at Micron in 2010 and they were married in May of 2014. He was a loving husband, father, son, brother and friend. His favorite thing in life was being a dad and being with his family. He leaves behind his wife Kristin and 4 beautiful children, Madisyn, Aubree, Aaron and Jeremiah. He also leaves behind his parents Tommy and Jeannette as well as his sisters Christie and Julia. A recent trip to Italy to celebrate union will be a trip we will all keep close to our hearts. He was very much a home body but was the biggest introverted extrovert you would have ever met. He enjoyed fishing and loved teaching the girls how to catch fish. Sports was a part of Joey's life and he spent a lot of time making sure his lineups were just right. Anyone that knew him knew how big of a Cowboys fan he was. Whenever Joey walked into a room you knew it. He was either the tallest or the loudest. He was always the life of the party and everyone loved being around him. He loved his job and took a lot pride in his work ethic. He was a great leader in any role he took. The thing I want Joey to be remembered most about was how kind his heart was. He always put others before himself. He never let his kids go without anything, even if it was just picking up chocolate on his way home from work. We are not going to say goodbye, but see you later because we know we will meet again. A Memorial service for Joey will be held at 12 p. m. on Wednesday, December 6, 2023 at Johnson Funeral Home, Locust Grove, VA. Reverend Barry Higgins will officiate the service.Show more

Barbara Gardner

Age - 87

December 1, 2023

In loving memory of Barbara Clore Gardner (Bobbie Ann) who passed away peacefully November 28, 2023, at the age of 87 in her home in Richardsville, VA surrounded by her family, where she was blessed to remain in her final years. She was greeted in heaven by her husband of forty-two years, Bernard Earl Gardner, Jr. and her parents Ennis Clore and Iva Martin Clore. Barbara is survived by her loving children, David Brian Gardner (Carol), Wanda Gail Gardner, Gene Kelly Gardner and Susan Martin Gardner. Barbara spent her entire life living in a quarter mile from her church, her home and where she grew up. She was born, lived and died in the only place she ever loved, Richardsville. After thirty-five years of service, Barbara retired from Culpeper County Schools as a para-educator, a job where she worked with children, and loved every minute of it. If she saw a child that needed shoes or a coat to keep them warm or gloves to keep their little hands from being cold or a hat to keep their ears warm or just better clothing, she would make sure they got what they needed. She always gave to the little children through Toys for Tots and the Salvation Army Angel Trees. Previously she had worked as a school bus driver for Culpeper County Schools and at Northern Piedmont Electrical. Being an active Christian and church member, she was a member of the Richardsville United Methodist Church, where she made sure to donate cereal to the food bank so the little children would have something to eat before coming to school. She was always thinking of the little children. Visitation will be Monday, December 4, 2023, at Johnson Funeral Home, Locust Grove, Va, from 4 - 6:30PM. Services will be held at Richardsville United Methodist Church, Richardsville, Va, on Tuesday, December 5, 2023, at 11 AM with interment to follow at the church cemetery. There will be time of fellowship in the Richardsville Fire Hall following the service. Pastor Mike Evans will officiate. The family expresses appreciation and special thank you to her at-home caregiver Barbara Leach for taking such great care of our mom for so many years. Memorial contributions can be made in her name to Marine Toys for Tots Foundation, Gift Processing Administrator, 18251 Quantico Gateway Drive, Triangle, VA 22172 or Richardsville Volunteer Fire Department and Rescue Squad, 29361 Eleys Ford Road, Richardsville, VA 22736. Avon Keen

Avon Keen

Age - 86

November 14, 2023

Avon Marie Elswick KeenA Life Well Lived & Loved by ManyOn November 6, 2023, Avon Marie Elswick Keen, 86 of Spotsylvania, VA, went home to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. She passed away peacefully in her home surrounded by her loved ones. Born in Big Rock, VA, Avon is survived by her loving and caring husband of 67 years, Vernie B. Keen, who was by her side every day until she went to meet her Jesus. She is also survived by her sisters Emogene Taylor, Glenda Hughes (Darrell), brother Danny Elswick (Darlene) and her Mother Mary. Additionally, survived by her are her children, Rebecca Burleson (Scott), David Keen (Cindy) and their children Joe and Dyllon, Rachel Keen and her children Camdyn, Avaclaire and Angela (David) and their children Emma and Sebastian, Leah Taylor (Chad) and their child Noah. She was preceded in death by her beautiful grandson Michael Thomas Burleson, and brothers Hubert, Paul and Roscoe Jr. , her dad Roscoe Sr. , and her mom Goldie Mullins Elswick. Avon was loving, caring, silly, courageous, and passionate about Jesus and her family. The courage it took her to leave her hometown when she finished high school, move to Washington D. C. to begin her career in the government, and raise her baby sister Glenda after their mother had passed away, is remarkable. Of course, Vernie packed up his things shortly after Avon moved to D. C. to follow her; he was not about to let his precious, pretty girl get away. From there, they built a home and life together that they loved. Love and compassion radiated from Avon. Anyone who knew Avon, knew you were always going to get two things when you visited her home, some J&J, Jesus and her famous jelly biscuits. She cared deeply for all those around her. It did not matter who you were, how you got there, or why you were there, when you walked into her home, you were a part of her family. She instilled a strong faith in her children. She was a mother who prayed her children to sleep, showed up for every game or event with her Daily Bread in hand, praying for her children to do their best. When you married one of her children, you were immediately blessed with another mother who loved you as her own. Her children and grandchildren remember growing up having a house full of their friends and neighborhood children. She always cooked and played her cassette tapes with little children singing. Avon would have picnics in the grass and teach bible stories. All the children took her bible school "tests" seriously, because for every right answer you got a piece of candy. She would spend hours playing hide and seek with her grandchildren, and her silly sounds of "hoo-hoo" and "meow" to give a clue as to where she was hiding will always play in their hearts. Anyone who met Avon will never forget her strong faith and her desire for everyone to know the love of Jesus. Avon knew her purpose on Earth was to teach little children about Jesus; she taught Sunday school for almost sixty years until her health no longer allowed her to. She was a pillar of strength having survived breast cancer twice, enduring the loss of her grandson Michael, and losing her memories to dementia. But regardless of her struggles, her faith never once wavered. She remained so precious and sweet, singing hymns and praying until her final breaths. This incredible woman is no longer with us. But the family has strength and comfort in knowing that Avon was ready to go to heaven. Her Savior's loving arms are wrapped around her. She is holding her grandson Michael, and smiling with her brothers, her mom, her dad, and her Jesus. A memorial service will be held at Belmont Baptist Church, 7221 Belmont Road, Mineral VA, on Saturday, November 18, 2023, at 2:00 p. m. The family asks that In lieu of flowers, donations be made to the National Breast Cancer Foundation Inc. (nationalbreastcancer. org)Show more
