Edward "Ed" Savage, 98, of Marshalltown, Iowa, passed away on the afternoon of Saturday, September 9, 2023 at Southridge Specialty Care in Marshalltown, surrounded by his family. A mass of Christian Burial for Ed will be held on Friday, September 15, 2023 at St. Francis of Assisi Parish: St. Mary Church beginning at 10:00 A. M. A visitation for family and friends will be held one hour prior to services. Memorials in Ed's name may be directed to his family for a later designation. Edward was born July 24, 1925 to parents James and Estella (Cheville) Savage in Marshalltown, Iowa. He was one of nine children. Ed grew up in Marshalltown and attended school in the catholic school district. He graduated from St. Mary High School in Marshalltown in 1943. On October 30, 1943, Ed enlisted in the United States Army and served overseas in Germany, France and Austria during World War II. He was a POW for 10-15 minutes. He was wounded New Years eve, shot through both thighs, with the bullet still remaining in his right upper thigh. He was honorably discharged from service November 19, 1945. On May 29, 1948, Ed was married to the love of his life, Betty Essen, at St. Mary Catholic Church in Marshalltown. Ed and Betty cherished every moment with siblings, nieces, nephews, and friends. Ed worked for 30 years at Coca Cola at the Marshalltown location. He had his own route that he worked for many years. Throughout the years he had also worked for Dunham-Bush, Stewart Lumber, and the Fisher Community Center. He was an active member of his community being a part of the Central Iowa Ornithologists Club, the Marshalltown American Legion, St. Francis of Assisi Parish: St Mary Catholic Church, and Altar Society. He was a lifetime member of the DAV and was always on the slow pitch team for the Old Timer Tavern. In his free time, he enjoyed playing nine holes of golf, participating on bowling leagues, weekly meals of Little Ceasars pizza, traveling, trips with Betty to do slide programs across the state of Iowa and talking birds and bird watching. He loved to work on minor wood working projects particularly on bird feeders and bird houses. He enjoyed Jeopardy, working on crossword and word search puzzles, reading books, and loved a good game of dominoes, sequence, and cards. Ed was a "family first" man, and was known for sending birthday cards with various colors of markers that were always on time. He is survived by his siblings; Kate Hauptly, Nita Harre, David Savage; 29 nieces and nephews; and numerous great nieces and nephews and great-great nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his wife, Betty Savage; his siblings; Chuck Savage, Paul Savage, Jimmy Savage, Aina Golly, Louie Savage, two siblings in infancy, and his parents James and Estella Savage.
