Alvin Vandenberg

Alvin Vandenberg

Age - 100

December 7, 2023

Alvin Peter "Al" Vandenberg was born on October 19, 1923. He grew up on his family's farm in Freedom, Wisconsin, where he attended Saint Nicholas Catholic School. Even as a very young boy, his father gave him tasks to let him help out on the farm. As he grew older, he assumed more responsibility for the farm, which produced almost all of their food. He learned to use horse-drawn implements like plows before they eventually switched to tractors. To supplement his income from the farm, he worked at a variety of businesses in the community. He also enjoyed hunting, fishing and trapping. During World War II, his conscription into the Army was deferred so he could keep the farm running, since by then, his father was too old to do it on his own. In 1949, after training at Camp McCoy, he was stationed in Washington state for a year, then returned home and spent several years in the Army Reserve. On a blind date arranged by his friends, he met Leona Brown, who would become his wife on May 25, 1954. With her encouragement, he quit farming and took a job at the paper mill in Combined Locks. There he became a skilled welder. Al and Leona had three children, Daniel, Sue and Dennis, who consider him to be a wonderful father. In 1972, they moved from Freedom to De Pere. Their new house was significantly smaller than their old one, so it was rather cramped at first. Al, with some help from his family, built two large additions to that house, turning it into the loving home where his children continue to live, surrounded by constant reminders of both his skill as a craftsman and his care for them. In De Pere, he joined Saint Mary Parish, remaining a member even when the church was relocated to Ledgeview. After thirty-eight years, he retired from the mill. To keep himself busy, he became a handyman doing assorted jobs for many of his elderly neighbors. He also enjoyed traveling, especially to Tennessee to enjoy the beauty of the Great Smoky Mountains. When he was home, he spent much of his time doing woodworking in his garage. He did many different projects, but letter-openers became his specialty. He made a large number of these, being sure that everyone in his family had one. In 2013, after fifty-nine years of marriage, his wife Leona died. Losing her was difficult and as he moved into his nineties, he faced more challenges to his health and abilities, but with the support of his children, he persevered. On October 19 of this year, Al reached the goal he had long set for himself and celebrated his 100th birthday with his children and his special sister-in-law, Nancy. Sadly, in the middle of November, his health took a sudden turn for the worse and he died on December 3. Al is preceded in death by his wife, Leona Irene (Brown) Vandenberg, father, Gilbert Vandenberg, mother Mary (Vanden Eng) Vandenberg, father-in-law Edwin Brown, mother-in-law Elinora (Reschke) Brown, step-brothers, William Vandenberg (Hilda), Edward Vandenberg (Mary), step-sister Mary (Vandenberg) Geurts (Albert), brothers Sylvester Vandenberg (Ceil), Clarence Vandenberg (Lorraine), Leo Vandenberg (Marion/Merry Jo), sisters, Sister Germaine (Stella) Vandenberg, Regina (Vandenberg) Hendricks (Edward), Margaret Vandenberg, brothers-in-law, Leo Brown (Rose/Veronica), Cletus Verheyen and sister-in-law Loretta (Carter) Brown. Al is survived by his children, Daniel Richard Vandenberg, Sue Ann Vandenberg, Dennis James Vandenberg, brothers-in-law, Harvey Brown, Richard Brown (Gail), sister-in-law Nancy (Brown) Verheyen, godson Gary Brown and numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated for Al on Tuesday, December 12, 2023 at 11:00 am at St. Mary Catholic Church, 4805 Sportsman Dr, Ledgeview. Al's children would like to thank Prevea clinics and St. Vincent Hospital for caring for his health over the years. Woodside Lutheran Home for helping him recover from surgery earlier this year and Unity Hospice for making it possible for him to spend his last days at home with them.Show more

Bradley Desch

Bradley Desch

Age - 45

November 30, 2023

Brad's road was long and difficult, yet he traveled it with strength and grace. He battled leukemia, lymphoma and all kinds of graft versus host complications after his bone-marrow transplant on Valentine's Day in 2019. He was a true warrior. He fought hard. On Nov. 25, he lost his battle, and we are all heartbroken. As one person wrote on his Battle Like Brad page, "he was loved by so many. He truly impacted our lives for the positive. He will never be forgotten. He fought bravely and his conviction was strong. He can now rest without pain, but our hearts will never be the same. Brad was such an amazing person. "And yet another wrote, "I am so thankful that I was lucky to be able to know and call Brad a friend. He was such a wonderful, genuine person. Brad will always be one of the sweetest and funniest people I have been blessed to know. ""Heaven gained an amazing angel," another wrote. "Brad was so loved. He was such a blessing to all his friends and family. He was one of the most kind-hearted people I've ever met and have had the joy of having him in my life and calling him a friend. He was one in a million. he was such an awesome soul and we will miss his contagious smile. "He was an amazing, smart, witty loving, caring and funny person. His niece wrote this for him; "I want you to remember you'll never be alone, I promise you. We have never left each other's side through this hard time, and I am so thankful for that. I'm so happy I got to grow up with you, with you kidnapping me every other day to go to lunch, you teaching me how to drive and being there for every birthday throughout the years and being there for the big things that happened and all my next big chapters in life. Not even death can break the bond we had, you were the most amazing person in my life. Thank you for being my ray of light in life. Our memories together will keep me going, I feel your presence even though you have gone. I know that your kind soul is in paradise watching over us. You were too well loved to ever be forgotten. As his parents, those comments make us extremely proud of the son we had for 45 years. The most important things in his life were his family and 16-year-old puppy, Skye. While he soared to the top in the business world working as a national account manager for a Chicago company, a business director for a company in Appleton, and with a wealth-management business in Minneapolis, all he really wanted was a simple life filled with love from friends and family. His dream was to live in an A-Frame home in the countryside. Unfortunately, his battle with cancer and it's aftermath made him spend much of his time in a hospital. He loved music and had an outstanding voice, singing "Bring Him Home" while performing for Kids from Wisconsin and playing and singing the role of Joseph in Dudley Birder's Music Theatre production at St. Norbert College of "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. "We called him Broadway Brad. He truly had the talent to perform in Broadway musicals. Like himself, his voice was one in a million. Today, we're sure he's singing in a heavenly choir. Brad was born December 14, 1977, to Kathy and Larry Desch in Rhinelander. After the family moved to De Pere, he attended Westwood Elementary and West De Pere High School where he also was in a number of school musicals. Going to college, he stayed close to home and graduated from St. Norbert College in De Pere in 2000. Then, he moved on to work at American Register Company in the Chicago area and quickly became national account manager there. Wanting to be near his family, he moved back to De Pere about 10 years later and worked for West Corporation in Appleton where he was training director and business director. Last year, he began working as client service manager for Fortune Financial with his best friend and fellow St. Norbert graduate. He also worked with his father on The Business News. He was an amazing son, brother, uncle and friend. We were so lucky to have him and so unlucky to have him leave us so early. He leaves a huge void in our life, but we will always be filled with joy remembering all the wonderful things he did in his time here. He was an incredible person. It will be unbelievably hard to live in a world without Brad. If roses grow in heaven, please pick a bunch for us. Plant them in our son's arms, and tell him they're from mom and dad. Tell him we love him and miss him,and when he turns to smile,Place a kiss upon his cheekand hold him for a while. Remembering him is easy,We do it every day. But there is a ache within our heartsthat will never go away. A celebration of Brad's life will be held from 3-7 p. m. , December 8, at the Bemis Center at St. Norbert College. Please go to ryanfh. com to send online condolences to the family.Show more
