Dwayne Mario Bowen was born on October 2, 1961, in Gary, Indiana to the union of Jim and Kathleen Bowen in Gary, Indiana. He was baptized by Rev. Clarence Lobdell at age eight at New Hope Baptist Church. Dwayne was affectionately known as "shorty. " He graduated from Lew Wallace High School in 1980 and from Greer Technical Institute in June, 1981. Dwayne was employed at City Bus Company in Lafayette, Indiana. Dwayne was always the life of the party and those around him could never escape his presence without a good laugh. And he never met a stranger. Dwayne was preceded in death by his father Jim Bowen, daughter Hallie Bowen, brother Jim Bowen, Jr. , grandparents Berthena Bowen, Cozy and Emma Shields, and Cisler Purdy. Dwayne leaves to cherish his loving memories, mother Kathleen Bowen, sister Antoinette Williams; two daughters, Tanisha and Charica Bowen; seven sons, Kamylo Johnican, Laquan Bowen, Dwayne Bowen, Jr. , Corey Bowen, Jordan Bowen, Chavel Bowen and Goldy Bowen; two grandchildren, Ja'Liyah Bowen and Jaylin Johnican; one aunt, Ann Stith; three uncles, Frank Mitchell, Lawrence and Stanley Purdy; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Bernice Tanner Richardson was born December 17, 1935, in Talladega, Alabama to the late Mattie Tanner and Gross Warwick. Bernice was blessed to have three sisters, Mildred (James) Swain, Annie Ruth (Oscar) Hudson, and Rosie Mae Threat. Bernice attended public schools in Talladega, Alabama and graduated from West Side High School in 1953. She attended college at Alabama A&M University, St. Joseph College in Whiting Indiana, and Indiana University Northwest in Gary, Indiana, graduating from IU Northwest in 1968 with a BS degree in elementary education. She received her Master's degree in elementary education from IU Northwest in 1973 and received administrative certification in elementary education from Notre Dame University in 1978. Bernice began her teaching career at St. Hedwig Catholic School in Gary, Indiana as a kindergarten/ first grade teacher and served as principal for five years before it closed in 1978. In 1979 she began work in the Gary Community School Corporation serving as an assistant principal and principal at three schools until she moved from Gary in 1985: Ivanhoe Elementary School, Williams Elementary School, and Chase Elementary School. During her 41 year career in education she also taught elementary education and reading at Moorehead State University in Minnesota, and served as an adjunct professor in the School of Education at IU Northwest. Bernice served as an elementary principal in the Buffalo Public Schools for four years from 1992-1996. In 2002 she returned to the Gary Community School Corporation and served as principal at two schools until her retirement in 2008: Kuny Elementary School and Brunswick Elementary School. Bernice was given numerous awards and honors for her achievements as an elementary school teacher and principal. Notable among those was a national teaching excellence award for elementary schools while at St. Hedwig Catholic School. She was also given public recognition for turning around a failing school by the Buffalo Public Schools superintendent upon her resignation in 1996. Bernice was a member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. and served as its president. Bernice loved children and they loved her. Children in her classes and in her schools were the center of her life's work. Bernice departed this life December 5, 2023. She was married to F C Richardson for 48 years (married in 1975). She was preceded in death by her parents; and her three sisters. She leaves to mourn her passing; her husband, FC; her loving son, Darrell D. Tanner of Denver, Colorado; granddaughters, Britney Tanner and Breana Stampley of Denver, Colorado; stepson, Dr. Melvin Richardson, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and other relatives, friends and former students from across the country to mourn her loss. Anthony "Tony" Allen Curtis of Gary, IN. transitioned November 20, 2023. Anthony was born February 3, 1964 to William "Billy Cie" and Leona Curtis. He graduated from West Side High School in 1982 and enlisted in the US Navy, where he served his country in Desert Strom, two tours in Italy, Virginia, and Florida. After serving in the miliary he started his own home repair business where he specialized in painting, building bathrooms, decks and roofing, but for all that knew him, Anthony could build or fix anything. Anthony enjoyed spending time with family and had an infectious laugh and loved to cook. His smile along and random outbursts of "Hooty Hoo" could light up a room. Anthony is preceded in death by: mother, Leona H Curtis; maternal grandparents, John and Helen Tillery; paternal grandparents, Cursie and Jeraldine Curtis. Mary Gwen Welch, 81, of Wichita Falls, Texas, a loving mother and MawMaw passed away Tuesday, November 28, 2023. Gwen was born on October 8, 1942 in Gary, Indiana to Lee Rogers and Mary Earline Welch. She grew up in Hobart, Indiana and graduated high school in 1960 where she was homecoming queen and cheerleader. She was the proud mom of three boys, David, Danny and Gary. She moved from Indiana in her adult life and lived in Carbondale Kansas, Makakilo Hawaii, Grand Forks North Dakota, Devine and Henrietta, Texas. She made close friends everywhere she lived. She was a member of the Southwest Baptist Church in Wichita Falls. She was MawMaw Gwen to her grandkids whom she loved dearly. She taught Sunday school and always loved working in the church nursery. She loved to crochet, make jewelry and decorate. She was known as MawMaw Gwen to many kids besides her grandkids. She was a stay-at-home mom, and had various jobs throughout her life including the telephone company, retail stores and babysitting,Gwen was preceded in death by her parents. Survivors include three sons, David Lambert of Henrietta, Texas, Danny Lambert and wife Teresa of Edmond, Oklahoma, Gary "Rocky" Cramer and Emarie Holland of Burkburnett, Texas; 13 grandchildren, Mike Lambert and wife Kristin, Heather Walls, Brandon Cramer and wife Olivia, Tyler Lambert, Brady Cramer, Devin Lambert and wife Macy, Chris Hargrave and wife Madison, Tanner Lambert, Macey Lambert, Parker Cramer, Carson Cramer, Abbott Holland, Lennon Holland, June Cramer and Tomlin Cramer; 6 great grandchildren, Evan and Lydia Lambert, Liam and Laken Walls, Lucy Hargrave and Daxon Lambert; Brother, Tom Welch and wife Marilyn of Boonville, Indiana, brother Jim Welch and wife Debbie of Dyersburg, Tennessee. It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Mrs. Maggie Harris, a beloved and cherished member of our community. Born on August 23, 1940, in Nettleton, Mississippi, she departed this earthly realm on November 19, 2023, at 9:19 AM. In 1966, Maggie relocated to Gary, Indiana, where she united in matrimony with the love of her life, Mr. MacArthur Harris Sr. Maggie dedicated a significant portion of her life to the culinary arts, serving as a cook in Gary for numerous years. Her enthusiasm for exploring new horizons and discovering the world around her was unmistakable throughout her lifetime. A woman of faith, Maggie accepted Christ at an early age and remained a devoted member of Love Thy Neighbor Missionary Baptist Church until her health declined. Preceding her in death were her parents, Perry Gardner and Alberta Bogan, her beloved husband MacArthur Harris Sr, two grandchildren (Steven Woods, Angel Harris), four sisters, and four brothers. She is survived by her loving brother, Marion Marrow. Maggie Harris leaves behind a legacy of love and family. Her memory will be forever cherished by her five daughters: Glenda Harris, Linda Harris, Paulette Miliner, Shirl Wilson, and Diane Hawkins (Arthur), as well as three sons: Tony Harris (Inita), Romell Harris (Tatianna), and Antonio Harris. Maggie's memory will be carried on by her thirty grandchildren, numerous great-grandchildren, and a multitude of nieces and nephews, all of whom she embraced and cared for as if they were her own. She also leaves behind dear friend Mattie Evans and a special cousin, Isalean Hunter. The life of Maggie Harris is a testament to the enduring power of love, faith, and familial bonds. My Life Story Patricia Paulette (Stevenson) Mack was born in East Chicago on March 14, 1956, to the late Pastor James and Mother Rosetta Stevenson. Patricia graduated from Westside Highschool in 1974. She made the decision to serve her country in the Army Reserve from Feb. 14, 1975 - Aug. 14, 1982. She was with 395th Combat Support Hospital of the 5th US Army Regiment. She received her training at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio, TX. She was a 91 Bravo Medical Specialist and a marksman. She received a good conduct medal and national defense medal. She was a Spec 5 specialist upon retirement. Patricia became an LPN in Oct. 1981. She put herself through school for her RN and graduated in Aug. 1992. She worked early on as a Pediatric Nurse at Mercy and the Methodist Hospitals. She also worked at St. Margaret, St. Anthony, and St. Catherine's as a geriatric nurse, oncology nurse, and she floated to other floors as needed. She was employed as the Head Nurse at the Indiana State Prison where she fought for the care of the inmates. In between working in the hospitals, Patricia did home health care and hospice. She retired from nursing in July 2015. Amid all her accomplishments and accolades, her greatest accomplishments were the birth of her three children. Patricia always said, "I gave birth to three, but my nieces and nephews are my children too. " You rarely saw her without her "Clan" or her "Chipmunks". She put love into everything she had done. . . whether it was cooking, sowing, or taking care of her family. She consistently put others before herself. She never would let a person go hungry, even if it meant that she would go without. Patricia departed this life on Nov. 14, 2023, after a long bout of illness. She is preceded in death by her parents: Pastor James and Mother Rosetta Sevenson. Brothers: James II, Ronald, and Walter (Scottie) Stevenson. Sisters: Barbara, Carol, and Cynthia Stevenson. Nephew: Brandon Stevenson. Patricia leaves to carry out her legacy; her children: Kenya Mack of Gary, IN; Joseph (RaQuell) Mack of Merrillville; Angela "Jordan" (Kenya) Mack of St. Paul, MN. Dennis (DW) Williams, 94, of Gary, Indiana, passed away on November 17, 2023. He was born on November 20, 1928, in Rowland, North Carolina, to the late Boyd and Nettie Williams. He attended Piney Grove Methodist Church in Maxton, North Carolina as a young man. This is where he established his faith as a young man in God. Dennis was an employee with US Steel Gary Works as a Crane Operator before retiring in 1988. He was a member of the Local 1040 and often worked with the union on contract and pension negotiations. In his past time, after retiring, he enjoyed gardening, carpentry work, real estate, politics and sports. Dennis enjoyed the game of baseball while growing up and would have possibly been scouted. But, he met the love of his life, Mildred Morrison, and they married on December 30, 1948, THE REST IS HISTORY. He loved to work in his community; this love would lead to helping to establish Angel of Faith Church in Gary, Indiana. He later became a deacon at St. Luke AME in Gary, Indiana. Dennis is preceded in death by his wife, Mildred Louise Williams; son, Clyde Williams; parents Boyd and Nettie Williams; brothers, James Howard, Rufus, Weldon, Cecil Cottingham, and Willis Williams; sisters, Ruth Townsend and Carrie McCrae. Dennis is survived by his children, Ruby Johnson, Gwendolyn Henley, Monwella Hartfield, and Denise Williams; two grandchildren, he raised as his own, LaTonya (Carter) Ketchup and Cartiae Ketchup; sister, Alice Mae McCall; two sisters-in-law, Sally Williams and Olean Williams; the legacy continues with nine grandchildren; twenty great-grandchildren; five great-great grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins. Dennis' legacy will continue through all that knew and loved him.
