Deroy “Roy” B. Wernis, a man of humble beginnings whose life was marked by hard work, love for family, and a passion for baseball, passed away on February 17, 2024, at the age of 88. Born on March 18, 1935, in Detroit, Michigan, Roy was the beloved son of the late Walfred and Lucile Marie Wernis.Roy’s journey was shaped by the values instilled in him during his upbringing in Yale, Michigan. Graduating from Yale High School in 1953, he embarked on a path defined by dedication and perseverance, traits he possessed while working on his uncle Al’s farm. A self-made man, Roy embraced the value of hard work early on, a principle that guided him throughout his life.Roy's devotion to his family was unmatched. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife and life partner, Mary B. Wernis, whom he cherished deeply. He was also preceded by his parents, as well as his sisters Diane Connors and Dee Erickson, his brother Dean Turner, and his Uncle Albert Tatoris and Aunt Alfreda.Roy’s legacy lives on through his sons, Peter C. Wernis (Danielle) and John A. Wernis (Stacy), and his grandchildren Trevor Dean (Elaina), Chase, Gabrielle, Ava, and Alec. He found immense joy in his role as a father and grandfather, sharing his wisdom and love with each generation.In 1956, at 21 years of age, Roy entered into the Freemasonry. He was a proud member of his Masonic Lodge, Brockway #316, the same lodge that his ancestors served before him. He remained an active member for the remainder of his life and found great joy in maintaining and carrying out their ideals.Roy’s commitment to his country was apparent in his service as an Army Veteran, where he served with honor and dignity. After his military service, he dedicated over 30 years of his life to Ford Motor Company, demonstrating the same work ethic and dedication that characterized his entire life. While working at Ford Motor Company, Roy graduated with a Bachelor of General Studies Degree from Oakland University in 1990.Beyond his professional accomplishments and his love for baseball, Roy’s greatest joy came from his family. He was a devoted husband, a loving father, and an adoring grandfather. His kindness, generosity, and unwavering love will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.In addition to his immediate family, Roy is survived by numerous extended family members and friends, including his cherished cousin, Bud. His memory will live on in the hearts of all who were fortunate enough to have known him. May he rest in peace, knowing that his legacy lives on in the hearts of those who loved him.A visitation and service to honor Roy will be held at A.J. "Barbara Ann Fitzgerald, of Troy, passed away on Sunday, February 18, 2024 at the age of 85. She was born on January 27, 1939 in Detroit, Michigan to Archibald and Elizabeth (nee Birk) Queen. Barbara graduated from Servite High School in 1957. Following graduation she went to work for Uniroyal Tire Company where she met her husband, James Fitzgerald. They soon started their family in Fraser, Michigan. Jim was later transferred to the Decatur, Georgia area where they spent the next 7 years before being transferred back to Michigan and settling down in Warren in 1976. While living in Georgia, Barb went to work for Equifax and remained with the company working at their Troy and Southfield offices when the family returned to Michigan. Jim and Barb took an annual trip after their children were older traveling to Ireland, Scotland, Alaska, Nova Scotia, Morocco, England and several other locations. When she stopped working outside of the home, Barb spent many wonderful years watching her grandchildren and enjoying time with them. Beloved wife of the late James. Dearest mother of Linda Dallas, Debbie (James) Lueck, Sandra Fitzgerald and Karen (Charles) Shreve. Loving grandmother of Nicole, Rebecca, Zachary, Brittany, Shane, Shelby, Ross, Charlotte and Georgia. Precious great grandmother of 11 great grandchildren. Dear sister of the late William (the late Ann Marie) Queen, the late Archibald (Carol) Queen, Mary (the late Robert) Powers and Jane (George) Diamond. Barb is also survied by many loving nieces and nephews. Whether he was stepping up to the plate or cheering from the dugout, his love for the game was palpable, leaving an indelible mark on all who shared in his passion.In 2018, Sean proudly walked the stage as a graduate of Troy High School, a testament to his dedication and perseverance. Beyond his athletic pursuits, Sean found joy in the simplicity of life's pleasures. Whether he was immersed in the captivating world of video games, with his PlayStation 5, or simply basking in the warmth of family gatherings, Sean's infectious smile illuminated every room he entered.Sean was more than just a son; he was a beacon of light in the lives of his parents, Dr. Everett and Diane Campbell. His presence brought immeasurable joy to his grandparents, Everett Oliver Campbell, Ernestine Campbell, Lucy Voyles, the late Robert Voyles, and James Byrd. "Leonard Kwapis, age 94, longtime resident of Madison Heights, Michigan passed away peacefully on February 15, 2024 at Troy Beaumont Hospital. He was born on September 16, 1929 in Saginaw, Michigan and raised in Gaylord, Michigan. He was the last survivor of a tight knit family, the oldest of 5 brothers and 1 sister who remained closely dedicated to each other throughout their lives. He served in the Korean War in the early 1950s. Following that he moved to the Detroit area to find better work opportunities than northern Michigan could provide, putting himself through college at night school, and having a 36-year career at the Chrysler Corporation where he became a cost estimating engineer. He met his wife Frances (Caroselli) in 1957. He is survived by his wife of 66 years, and his 5 children Ann Marie (Bob Maher), Jeannie, David, John (dec), and Glenn, grandchildren Robbie (Skyler) and Michael Maher, and great grandchildren Penn and Sage Maher. He spent many happy summers at the family cottage on Lake St. Helen, Michigan with his three sailboats, and he enjoyed gardening, driving his ‘69 Dodge Coronet, and was an avid jogger. He was a founding member of St. Vincent Ferrer parish in Madison Heights, and remained active in the Dad’s Club, Capuchin Soup Kitchen, St. Vincent DePaul Society, and other activities. He served on the Madison Heights Planning Commission and was active with the Red Oaks Nature Center. He was a leader of CAPs – Citizens Against Pollution who worked for many years to get the Madison Heights incinerator closed in the late ‘80s. Visitation will be held on Saturday February 24th from 9:30 to 10:30 AM at the Hopcroft Funeral Home, 31145 John R. Road, (1 block N. of 13 Mile Road, west side of John R. Road), Madison Heights, Michigan followed by a Funeral Mass at 11:00 AM at St. Vincent Ferrer Church, 28353 Herbert Street, Madison Heights, Michigan. Burial will be privately held on a future date at Guardian Angel Cemetery, Rochester, Michigan.
