Norma Brathwaite

Age - 98

November 18, 2023

Norma Aurora Brathwaite, 98, formerly of Atlantic City, New Jersey died peacefully in her home in Ellenwood, Georgia surrounded by her loving family on the morning of November 8, 2023. She was a proud Bajan born to Millicent Holmes and Ernest Ward on February 24, 1925, in Saint Philip, Barbados. In Barbados, Norma attended the Saint Martin's Girls' Elementary School and Ashton Skeene Private School later known as the Industry High. After finishing high school, she went into business by opening a grocery store in the neighborhood which she did until she immigrated to the United States in 1956. After immigrating to the United States, Norma made her way to Atlantic City, New Jersey, which she made her home for more than sixty-five years. On November 16, 1957, she married Conrad DeCosta Brathwaite who predeceased her in 1992. Those who shopped in Atlantic City's Garwood Mills Department store will remember her sunny personality. She was in the sales department but seemed to have the entire store under her control. There she met and befriended many people, but her life-long friend from there became Gwendolyn Demones. After retiring from Garwood Mills, Norma, never one to be idle, became one of the "Day One" employees at Atlantic City's Sands Casino. She was a supervising cashier there, but again, be assured that she was running the entire casino hotel complex and knew all that was happening in every department. From the moment of her arrival in Atlantic City, Mrs. Brathwaite was an active and integral member of Saint Augustine's Episcopal Church. Not only was she a member of Saint Martha's Guild, but there were also times it seemed she was the church's greatest champion. If there was a fund-raising initiative, the church could be guaranteed that Norma would contribute herself and strongly encourage others to do so as well. Norma was a great sports fan. She enjoyed watching baseball games and going to Roller Derby matches. She also must have had one of the greatest telephone plans ever - there was never a time when you would call or visit her that she was not on the telephone talking to a friend or relative in back home in Barbados. If you really wanted to get her talking - never hard to do -- Start a conversation about anything or anyone Bajan. She loved making and eating codfish cakes, pigeon peas and rice, cou cou and flying fish. And when she cooked, she would share her bounty with everyone who even remotely shared her love for foods from the "old country". People would joke with Norma that she had more people in and out of her home visiting her than Macy's had shoppers. While a resident of 233 North New York Avenue, Norma was the Queen of Building. Everyone was looking out for her and treating her like royalty. This was because she treated everyone the same - as royalty. Though she known for her kindness and great generosity, only a fool would dare to get on her bad side. If you did, you would soon learn in no uncertain terms and words you would not think the dear sweet church lady would know -- let alone string together with such precise elocution. Yes, you would know the "what for". She is survived by: nephew, Frank Durant, and his wife, Virhinya, who were her loving caretakers; nephews, Peter Holmes, Anthony Durant, and Rodney Brathwaite; nieces, Davida Holmes and Brenda Moore ; great-nieces, Candice Howard and Courtney Walcott; great-nephews, Remi Durant and Gregory Brathwaite; adopted grandsons, Joseph F. Greenidge, Jr. , Jeffrey B. Pope and Charles Q. Greenidge; goddaughter, Consuelo Bogg, cousins, Gloria Callender, Ianthe McCree, Dr. Sylvester Braithwaite, Eunice, Ermie and Joel Clark; dear friends, Gwen, Doris and Rat; and a host of other family and friends. A Mass of Christian Burial will be Noon, Friday, December 1, 2023, Saint Augustine's Episcopal Church, 1709 Arctic Avenue, Atlantic City, New Jersey, where friends may call from 10:30AM. Interment will follow in Atlantic City Cemetery, Pleasantville, New Jersey. Arrangements entrusted to Greenidge Funeral Homes, Atlantic City, where condolences and photographs may be left at www. greenidgefuneralhomes. com.Show more
