Doris Opal (Behringer) Dickson Doris Opal (Behringer) Dickson, loving mother, mother-in-law, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend to all she met, died peacefully at age 104, on December 4, 2023, at The Reserve Assisted Living facility in Katy, Texas. Doris's tender heart and welcoming nature made her a beacon of love and kindness for all her family and friends. Doris was born in the small farming community of Riesel, Texas on September 24, 1919. She was the youngest of five children of Ida and J. H. Behringer. J. H. was a first-generation Texan whose family migrated from Germany and settled in the Riesel area with a number of other family members. Though only farming several small tracts of land, J. H. was a successful farmer and businessman. J. H. passed away when Doris was only 8 and, with her loving mother Ida at the head of the family, she lived an idyllic small-town childhood centered around family, friends, school and the church. Doris graduated from Riesel High School in 1937 as part of a 19-person graduation class where she served as class president. While in high school, she played softball (without a glove) and basketball. In the late 1930's, Doris graduated business school and started her career as a bookkeeper at RC Cola in Waco, TX where she met her future husband of 53 years John D. Dickson, Sr. Doris and John were married on August 13, 1942, in Alexandria, LA where John was stationed with the US Army at the outbreak of World War ll. After the war, Doris and John lived in Waco and Pasadena, TX where she worked at Cameron Ironworks until the birth of their son John D. Dickson, Jr. Later in life, Doris found a new passion in working with children at Mother's Day Out programs both in Pasadena and Waco where they returned after John's retirement. John passed away in 1995 and Doris continued to live in Waco until 2009 when she moved to Katy to be near her son and family. Doris lived the last nine years of her life at The Reserve in Katy. The family thanks the wonderful staff at The Reserve for their care of Mom over these years. They have also been a source of strength and encouragement for the family as Doris' health deteriorated. At The Reserve, Doris enjoyed spending time with her friends and the staff playing dominoes and bingo and socializing at Happy Hours. The family also thanks the equally wonderful the staff of Fairmont Hospice for their care of Doris and for the support and counsel provided to the family. Doris lived to the amazing age of 104 and was blessed with good health until age ultimately took its toll. Up until the end, she was an active member of her community at The Reserve, enjoyed discussing current events, wanted to be aware of all the grandsons' lives and always enjoyed visits from family and friends. Doris was preceded in death by her parents J. H. and Ida Behringer, brother Louis Behringer and sisters Selma Guggolz, Trecia Walden and Bessie Storrs. Doris is survived by son and daughter-in-law John and Jeri Dickson of Katy, TX; grandson Mitchell and his wife Nathalia Dickson of Baton Rouge, LA; grandson Tim Dickson of Katy; and grandson John III and his husband Rajan Dickson of Farmingdale, NY. Also two beautiful great grandchildren, Theo and Melissa Dickson and several nieces and nephews. The love of a wonderful mother lives on in the heart through each year.
