Waltraud Brown

Waltraud Brown

Age - 78

December 5, 2023

Wallie Brown dedicated her life to raising her family and contributing to her church community. If you received a bulletin on a Sunday morning at our Shepherd Lutheran Church from the 80's through 00's, chances are she printed and folded it. She was heavily involved in the Martin Luther Lutheran Grade School and took the lead on things like Wednesday hot lunch, field trips, and extra-curricular activities. If you attended that school, chances are she corrected your spelling book. After her sons finished college and emptied the nest, she went back to her career and worked as an office administrator for several firms. She embraced her role of Gramma as she retired. Both of her granddaughters have good memories of their Gramma and will always remember her fondly. Both have learned an appreciation for Pierogi and German cooking from her example. As we communicated her passing, her nieces and nephews responded with several fond stories. She was known as the "Fun Aunt" and played catch and games with them. A complete surprise to her sons, she was known for having good taste in music and played Beatles and Elvis songs with the younger generation. As she spent her final years in Fox Run Assisted Living in Novi, she loved to get updates on her granddaughter's activities like Olivia's soccer matches and Jacqueline's Dance Company. She was very proud of her grandchildren and bragged about them at every opportunity. She also watched pretty much every Tiger Baseball game on TV and was always a wealth of knowledge on how Detroit sports teams. One visit or call to mom and you would be up to date. As she joins her Husband Marvin in Heaven, we reflect on how much she put into others and never once needed any spotlight or recognition for her work. She was happy standing in the background watching the people she supported shine in their lives. She is an example of someone who took nothing for granted and made the most of the lot God had given her. Family will receive friends Sunday, December 10, 2023 from 1PM until the time of the Funeral Service at 2PM at A. J. Desmond & Sons (Price Chapel), 3725 Rochester Road (between Big Beaver & Wattles), Troy, (248) 689-0700. Memorial tributes may be made to the Crown of Life Lutheran Church. ~Lovingly written by the family.Show more

She leaves behind 10 Grandchildren, 15 Great-Grandchildren and 1 Great-Great Grandchild. Ingrid finished the equivalent of High School in Sweden and then her mother suggested sheattend a "Household School" in Stockholm, Sweden. She went for a year and learned all therewas to learn about a Household (cooking, setting a table for guests, cleaning, laundry, takingcare of children - there were orphans in this school from small young babies to toddlers, and somuch more. ). She always told us that this was the best thing her mother could have done as itprepared her for life. Ingrid was an incredible woman that met (Willy) William E. Berg backaround 1946. She was walking down the street of her hometown of Vasteras, Sweden whenshe came upon a mutual friend who introduced her to Willy (William) Berg - Years later in themid-late 1960's the family went to Oakland County Court House and changed their last namefrom BERG to BERGE. When they were engaged, Ingrid's father sent her to the United States tovisit her maternal Aunt in Boston and then travel by train to the West Coast - Los Angeles andHollywood to be with friends of her fathers. There she got to go to Hollywood Studios and seemovies being filmed and see "Hollywood Stars". She got to experience so much in the 6months she was in the USA until she went back to Sweden. The two married on 7/7/1951 inVasteras, Sweden. They lived in Stockholm for some time before William was offered a positionin the United States. This was in the fall of 1952 - Ingrid was pregnant with their first childwhen they crossed the Atlantic by Ocean Liner around November of 1952 - storms were allover and the boat voyage was not fun, Ingrid will tell me. Large waves and boats in distress allaround them she was not feeling well most of the trip. They arrived safely to New York Harborwhere they eventually immigrated to Minneapolis, Minnesota. Michael Harald Berg (Berge)was born 3/15/1953 in Minneapolis, MN. Later the couple would move to San Rafael, California(North of San Francisco) and there another child was born, Jan-Olof Harald Berg (Berge) on8/10/1955. Later the couple then moved back to Sweden, Michael attended 1st grade inSweden - William would go ahead, and Ingrid had to take care of the children and get all thebelongings packed and ready for shipping overseas. That happened each time they wouldmove across the Ocean. They lived in Sweden for a short time and then came back to theStates. This time to Tenafly, New Jersey. They lived here for a while and then went to CapeCod before heading back to Sweden again - this was now 1961. Ingrid was pregnant again withher last child, Catarina Susanne Elisabet Berg (Berge) or known as Tina. Catarina arrived inVasteras, Sweden on 9/29/1961. The couple moved back to the States in the summer of 1962and settled in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan. This is where they would stay until selling in the early1990's and moving to Troy, Michigan, their last home. Ingrid, William and Catarina (Tina) wouldbecome Naturalized United States Citizens in the late 1990's. Ingrid Berge was a stay-at-home Mother while all her children were growing up. She loved toCook and Bake, and she was darn good at it. She knew how to entertain - and she attributedall this knowledge of cooking, baking and caregiving to the Household School she attended aftershe was done with High School in Sweden, not to mention what she learned from her ownmother growing up. When they arrived in Michigan, Ingrid found other Swede's in the area, herfirst friend was Margareta Berker and she introduced her to other folks. Ingrid becameinvolved with The Detroit Swedish Council and The Jenny Lind Club of Detroit. She learned toBowl and actually bowled a perfect game one day! She learned to play Golf and actually was agood golfer. William, her husband, loved to Golf as well and the two would play together asthey once were members of Forest Lake Country Club. Ingrid was also one of the manyfounding members of SWEA-Michigan (Swedish Women's Educational Association). Ingrid heldmany Board positions in all these organizations. She was actually quite the pillar of the SwedishCommunity here in S. E. Michigan. She was also a member of the Swedish Club in FarmingtonHills, Michigan. She was a long-standing Board Member of The Detroit Swedish Council - nowknown as The Detroit Swedish Foundation. She was pivotal for assisting for the King and Queenof Sweden visit at Cranbrook in Bloomfield Hills; many Smorgsbord's that were held over all theyears; many Lucia Dinner Dances that were held over all the years; many Midsummercelebrations held over all the years and so, so, so, much more. Ingrid was the type of individualthat if anyone needed help with something, she was there. . . she rarely said No. Ingrid later would earn some extra money doing Swedish-English-Swedish Translations forcompanies - she has translated GM vehicle manuals from English to Swedish. Not to mentionmany legal documents needed for Insurance companies to process health claims or whateverfrom Swedish to English. Whatever they needed Ingrid was there to help. She also worked as a Secretary for Kelly Services for years, also Oakland Schools, and then as aSecretary for individuals with small businesses. She also assisted William Berge in his manybusiness endeavors and was his Secretary as well. The Two of them traveled the worldtogether when William needed to do some business travel. She would take the kids to Swedenevery summer where the family would visit all the Grandparents, Aunts/Uncles and cousins andstay in the Morck family "city house" and "summer house". Many memories were made duringthose Swedish summers. Ingrid would in later years coordinate Swedish Trips for individualshere in the Michigan area to go to Sweden and see the sights. . . she coordinated all the traveland sight-seeing for these trips. Many, many individuals got to enjoy Sweden this way andlearn so much about the country. William loved Ingrid from the day he met her until the day he died.
