Robert Thompson

Age - 95

Robert (Bob) Gene Thompson, 95, of Downingtown, PA, passed away peacefully at his home on Wednesday, December 6, 2023. Bob Thompson was affectionately known by many as the "Mayor" of Struble Trail (Rails to Trails network). For nearly 30 years he walked the trail; even after bypass surgery, he trekked along with his walker, always offering a cheerful "have a nice day" to everyone he passed and carrying a pocketful of treats for his 4-legged friends. Born in Milwaukee, WI, Robert was the son of the late Leonard A. and Hulda A. (Granstrom) Thompson. His father was a postman on the railroad and instilled in Bob a love of trains. At the age 19, he served 18 months as an MP in Korea at the end of WW II. After the army, he attended Denison University (class of 1952) in Granville, OH and was actively involved in the theatre department as a stage-lighting technician. One day, he was hanging lights in the theatre, his stocking feet dangling from the rafters. A petite gal from Minnesota called from the stage below, "Can I darn those socks for you?" Thus began a 70 year romance between Bob and his beloved wife Nancy A. (Heckman) Thompson. After college, Bob worked as an electrician and instrument engineer and quickly earned a reputation as the go-to-man for any job. His employers would say, "If you want something done right, call Bob Thompson. " He first worked for Owens Corning Fiberglass, then moved to Downingtown as an employee of Beloit Corporation, and worked for Roy F. Weston Inc. until his retirement. Robert was a member of the Instrument Society of America and was also a proud, life-long member of the Girl Scouts of Eastern Pennsylvania, Downingtown (SU#602). In addition to his many skills on the job, Bob co-authored two books of family genealogy and was the keeper of the family-tree "chart" that he brought to every family reunion. Over the years, he also enjoyed photography, travel, classical music, attending local theatre productions, and driving his convertible Karmann Ghia in road rallies. He was an avid HO model railroad hobbyist and loved traveling by rail and figuring out train and plane schedules for his four children. In addition to his wife, Robert is survived by his children: Richard T. Thompson of Corvallis, OR, Roderick S. Thompson (Patricia Ryan) of Downingtown, PA, Wendy J. Thompson (Elise Bush) of Fairview, OR, Jane L. Thompson of Charlottesville, VA; 5 grandchildren (Erin, Kimberly, Christopher, Patrick & Ailish); 4 great-grandchildren (Kennedy, Quillen, Eleanor Margaret & Jemma Jean); sister-in-law, Judith Thompson, and his right hand man Warren Kim Popjoy. In addition to his parents, Robert was preceded in death by his brother, Dr. Howard E. Thompson. A visitation will be held on Tuesday, December 12, 2023 from 1:45-2:45 PM at James J. Terry Funeral Home, 736 E. Lancaster Ave. , Downingtown, PA 19335. A memorial service will be held at 3 PM at the funeral home. Inurnment will be conducted privately at the convenience of the family. The family is deeply appreciative of all the friends, neighbors, and people we will never know who lent a hand, helping dad as he strived to stay active in the community. In remembrance of Bob, take a walk and say "have a nice day" to everyone you meet. Fix something requiring multiple trips to your local family-owned hardware store (Maxwell's), and on Saturdays, buy lottery tickets and Sunday morning donuts at Wegman's. Memorial contributions in Robert Gene Thompson's name may be made to the charity of your choice.Show more
