Joseph O'Donnell Jr

Joseph O'Donnell Jr

Age - 54

December 7, 2023

Joe O'Donnell, Jr. passed from this world on December 4, 2023, at the too young age of 54. He died suddenly and unexpectedly from heart failure and appears not to have suffered. Joe, or Joey as he was called by many of us, grew up in Deerfield, IL. He attended Holy Cross Elementary School and Deerfield High School. Always a whiz with numbers, he earned both a B. S. in Mathematics and Computer Science and an M. S. in Computer Science at Loyola University in Chicago. Joe taught both high school and middle school math in the Archdiocese of Chicago for almost 25 years, serving students at Loyal Academy, Carmel Catholic High School, St Gilbert Catholic School, Immaculate Conception Catholic School, and most recently, at St. Matthias Catholic School. He was an incredibly dedicated teacher, able to tailor his approach to a range of ages and abilities. His students praised him for breaking down complex algebra, geometry, and calculus problems and explaining them in ways that were easy to understand. He loved tutoring kids individually, customizing his instruction to fit each child's learning needs. Joe also taught religion, using music and videos to help bring faith alive for the kids in his class. Joe lived his Catholic faith in many other ways. He spent a college semester in Rome and actually met Pope John Paul II. He was incredibly generous, donating time and money to a number of organizations, including the Salvation Army, UNICEF, Catholic Charities, H. O. M. E, and Wounded Warriors. For Christmas, he always made donations in our names to charities he knew would be meaningful to us. Joe also looked to other traditions for spiritual inspiration. He followed Thich Nhat Hanh, a Buddhist monk known as "the Father of Mindfulness" and had hoped to visit the Deer Park Monastery in California; took online classes at Spirit Rock Meditation Center; and listened to podcasts by Tara Brach. Joe was a lifelong fan of the Chicago Cubs and the Chicago Bears, meaning he was often disappointed but never gave up. He ushered at Wrigley Field, attended the Cub's first night game on 8/8/88, and was beyond thrilled when they won the 2016 World Series, the first time in over a century. He was an avid Peanuts fan, collecting many of their books and visiting the Charles Schulz Museum and ice rink in California. Joe is survived by his mother, Mary O'Donnell; his sisters Mary Jo O'Donnell Cook (Rob) and Anne O'Donnell Kelly (Tom); his nieces Kelly (Greg Walor) and Laura Cook; his nephews Sean (Carli), Donald and Peter Kelly; and cousins and friends and countless grateful students. A visitation will be held on Saturday, December 9, 2023 at 9 am, followed by a funeral mass at 10 am, both at Holy Cross Church, 724 Elder Lane, Deerfield, IL. Interment is private.
