James Waylon Hilley, 79, of Florence, SC, passed away unexpectedly on November 14th. A memorial service will be held at 2:00PM on Saturday, December 16th at Cain Calcutt Funeral Home in Florence. Waylon was born on March 22nd, 1944 to the late Floyd Melvin Hilley and Golden Inez Baird in tiny Doerun, Georgia. He spent his youth working in his family's small town grocery store and playing basketball, a sport he always loved. After graduating from Doerun High in 1962, he went on to study Electricity at Albany Technical College. After graduation, he was hired as a lineman for Georgia Power, where he helped electrify extreme rural Georgia. He later owned a gas station in Moultrie, Georgia but spent most of his life working in the finance industry. After retiring from finance in 2001, he was a car salesman for Saturn of Florence, where he was salesperson of the year from 2002-2007. Waylon was an active member of several churches throughout his life and was a Deacon at Ebenezer Baptist in Florence. He was an electrician, woodworker, gardener and all-around handyman who could fix just about anything. He had a lifelong love of British sports cars, of which he owned and restored several over the years. Waylon also was an active member of the Florence Evening Lions Club, where he was president for many years. He was instrumental in securing funding to purchase an advanced eye exam device that greatly expanded the abilities of the club. This equipment has been used to perform thousands of free eye exams across the Pee Dee in the ensuing years. He was elected to the Lions Club International Hall of Fame and awarded the Melvin Jones Fellowship Award. Mr. Hilley was a beloved son, brother, son-in-law, brother-in-law, father, grandfather, great grandfather and friend. He was an unassuming and selfless man who gave freely of his time to help others, right up until he physically wasn't capable of doing so. He was a doting grandfather who cared for and provided for his children and grandchildren in a way uncommon among most men of his generation. He loved us all, with everything he had, and he provided the blueprint for unconditional love as a father. Mr. Hilley was predeceased by his brother Clifford Hilley, his son Jon Hilley and his sister Eloise (Hilley) Torrence. He is survived by his former wife Gail Wright and 3 of their sons and daughters-in-law, Shawn and Amber Hilley, Corby and Amanda Hilley and Janson and Jessica Hilley along with 6 grandchildren, Will and Natalie (Hilley) Shealy, Sydney Hilley, Austin Hilley, George and Bailee (Hilley) Resendiz, Quentin Hilley, Laurel Hilley and his great granddaughters Nora Resendiz and Katie Grace Shealy.
