Doris K. O’Brien of Sioux City passed away peacefully on Oct. 6, 2023 after a relatively short illness. Her life will be remembered on Thursday, October 12th at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel. Family will be present from 4 to 7:30 p. m. with a prayer service at 6:30. Her welcome into Heaven will be celebrated at St. Michael Catholic Church on Friday, October 13th, at 10:30 a. m. Online condolences may be directed to www. meyerbroschapels. com. Doris was born to Alfred and Mary Reisch on Sept. 24, 1931 in Le Mars, Iowa. She recently celebrated her 92nd birthday. While attending St. Joseph's nursing school in Sioux City, she met Jack O’Brien, whom she married in 1953. She practiced her nursing profession in local hospitals until 1958 before focusing on raising their five children. Doris, who possessed a loving and nurturing soul, made the O’Brien household a place where all were welcome. After years of devotion to family, she returned to nursing at the Siouxland Blood Bank in 1980, where she worked until retirement. An avid bridge player, spirited Hawkeye fan and friend to all; she will be profoundly missed. She and her family are forever grateful to her caregivers and friends at Sunrise Retirement Community. She is survived by 5 children, 15 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren. Her children are Michael (Marilee) O’Brien of Dakota Dunes, SD; Sharon (David) Bufo of Los Osos, CA. ; David (Stacey) O’Brien of West Okoboji, IA; John (Brenda) O’Brien of Stafford, VA; and Mary (Shane) Hartnett of Dakota Dunes, SD. Her grandchildren are Gayle (Sean), AJ, Samara (Kyle), Jackson (Nicole), Cassandra (Erik), Ansley, Jacklyn, Elise, Jensen, Tyler, Beverly, Olivia, Shawn, Nikki and Kelli. Her great-grandchildren are Emerie, Leon, Eloise and Rosalind. She is also grieved by two sisters, Faye Vittito and Lynne (Jim) Katt; and sisters- and brother-in-law, Anne Reisch, Nella O’Brien, Mary O’Brien, Ray and Shiuvaun Nasypany; and numerous nieces and nephews. She will be welcomed home by her husband John T. (Jack) O’Brien; infant son, Paul; her parents Alfred and Mary Reisch and parents-in-law Mike and Myrtle O’Brien; her brother Don Reisch; sisters and brothers in law, Al and Patti Aiken, Don and Ruth O’Brien, Mike and Gladys O’Brien, B. She was born and raised in El Salvador, Concepion de Ataco, Departamento de Ahuachapan, and moved to the United States in 1998 where she lived the rest of her life in Sioux City. Dora studied at Complejo Educativo "Antonio J. Alfaro" and graduated Instituto Nacional Alejandro de Humbolt in 1986 with a degree with nursing. She made her career working as a nurse, also working for a time at BPI and Interbake Foods. On February 28, 2006 Dora married Kurt D. Cohen in South Sioux City, Nebraska. Kurt preceded Dora in death on May 10, 2020. Dora was a devout Catholic and practiced her faith by spending time reading her bible, as well as in her actions towards others and helping those in need. In her free time, she loved to take care of her plants and flowers, spend time with her family granddaughter, Jazmin, and loved to go on walks at Riverside Park and Trinity Heights. She also loved to dance and listen to music, both Spanish and English. She is survived by her mother, Maria Julia Cabrera; son, Jose Rivera and his wife Blanca Diaz; son, Luis Hernandez; son, Kevin Garcia; sister, Deysi Arevalo; granddaughter, Jazmin Rivera; and grandson, Marcos Rivera. She was preceded in death by her husband, Kurt. D Cohen; and her father, Miguel A. Zometa. Pauline Ruth Sneller, 89 of Sioux City, Iowa, daughter of Earl and Ethel (Grotenhuis) Atkins, passed away Tuesday, November 28, 2023 peacefully in her sleep. A Memorial Service will be at 1:00 p. m. Friday, December 15, 2023 at the Grace United Methodist Church with Reverend John Christianson officiating. A Reception will be held in the fellowship hall following services. At the age of 9, she and her family moved to Pella, Iowa where she attended Pella High. Pauline worked as the Secretary for the Pella City Clerk and was selected to ride on the City Office float for the annual Tulip Festival. During a Tulip Festival dance, she met the love of her life, Vernon Sneller. Both dressed in traditional Dutch attire and danced in wooden shoes. They married four years later August 10, 1957, in Pella. Pauline and Vern were together from then on and celebrated their 67th wedding anniversary on August 10, 2023. After marriage, they lived in Pella, Woodward, Le Mars and Sioux City Iowa. Pauline and Vern raised 5 children: LeeAnn, Tim, Ron, Lisa and Michael. They were both active in their church. Pauline enjoyed participating in the choir, Hand Bell Choir and Women’s Bible Study at Grace United Methodist Church in Sioux City, Iowa. Pauline and Vern also enjoyed square dancing and were committee members for their group named Skirts and Flirts. For a short time, they also ran a small business aptly named VP Enterprise. A devoted mother and loving spouse, Pauline enjoyed beading, playing the piano and music of any form. One of Pauline’s proudest achievements was heading up the Grace United Methodist Church Outreach Commission Refugee Program helping relocate five families from Vietnam and Cambodia. In 1989, Pauline was awarded the Individual Governor’s Volunteer Award for providing outstanding volunteer service presented by Governor Terry Branstad at the Governor’s Annual Volunteer Recognition Ceremony. Pauline is survived by her children: daughter Lee Ann, sons Tim (Debbie), Ron (Rhonda), and Michael (Lori) of Sioux City, Iowa and daughter Lisa (Mike) Engeldinger, of Bellevue, Washington; 12 Grandchildren, Brysen Sneller, Sarah (Dagan) Davenport, Tim (Heather) Sneller, Cole (Marsha) Sneller, Nate (Missy) Sneller, Ronnie Sneller, Raven Sneller Jessica Engeldinger, Ben Engeldinger, Brandon (Jazmine) Sneller, Karalynn Sponder, Kendra Ahrnkiel; and 5 Great-Grandchildren. Saturday, (December 2, 2023) at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 5010 Military Road, Sioux City. Burial will follow mass in McCook Cemetery, McCook, SD. Formerly from Le Mars, Norma was born on February 24, 1938 to parents Frank and Seraphine (Guntren) Rolfes of rural Le Mars, Iowa. She graduated from St. Joseph Mercy School of Nursing in Sioux City. She married Paul McCarthy on June 12, 1965. Norma worked as a registered nurse prior to marriage and paused her career to care for her 6 children. After her children were older, she worked as a home health nurse and then enjoyed a long career as a Charge Nurse at Holy Spirit Retirement Home. She loved her family and volunteered with numerous church, school and community groups. She loved to travel and her family have wonderful memories from numerous locations including Adventureland, St. Louis, Chicago. Norma loved animals, sitting on her deck, and reading. She enjoyed unique, fun gifts for friends and family and was an avid letter writing - sharing the interesting things she learned. Norma is survived by her loving family: Brian, Omaha, NE; Patrick, Yankton, SD; Kelly (Dana), Minnetonka, MN; Kevin, Bloomington, MN; Marcia Bolton (Travis), Liberty, MO; Kerry McNamara (Bob), Sioux City, IA; 14 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren. Marvin A. "Doc" Norby, 98 of Sioux City, passed away, Saturday, November 25, 2023. Funeral services will be 11:30 A. M. Tuesday, December 5, 2023 at Meyer Brothers Morningside Chapel. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service time at the funeral home. Burial will be at Memorial Park Cemetery. Marvin was born September 30, 1925, the youngest of 4 children to Oscar and Blanche (Pearson) Norby in Pratt, Kansas. He married Mary Lou Weathers on August 3, 1952 in Anthon, Iowa. Marvin graduated from KSU in 1947 with a veterinarian degree. He moved to Iowa for work and found many opportunities with large and small animals. He was an inspector at the stockyards for several years before it closed. He always provided for his family. Doc enjoyed working outdoors on the farm or around the yard. And, of course, food. Being from the Depression era, he did not let anything go to waste. He is survived by his sons, Eric (Dorrine), David (Robbie), Phillip, and Kim (Sandra); grandchildren Dustin, Zane, Christopher, Skyler Hill-Norby, Teagan Hill-Norby, and Joe, Ben, and Daniel Beitelspacher; and great grandchildren, Sammy, Mason, Beckett, Marissa, Mallory, Lillian, Nile, Ella, Jamison, Oaklynn, and Harper. Gunnar had a heart of gold and was always there for everyone, especially his family. He could always be seen with a smile on his face and gave the best hugs. He loved fishing, Nike apparel, was in cub scouts, and played football, soccer and baseball. Jan Paul Olson passed away Tuesday November 21, 2023, from natural causes at his Sioux City residence. There will be a Celebration of Life at the home of Jan & Patti Olson Friday, December 1, 2023, at 6pm. Jan was born August 12, 1945, in Wisconsin Rapids, Wisconsin. He had 2 brothers and 3 sisters. Jan served in the U. S. Army for over 21 years. He worked another 20 plus years for the US Government as a civil servant. He was in Long Beach at the Naval Hospital and then went on the Denver, Colorado where he retired from the Defense Finance Accounting Services (DFAS). Jan met his wife Patti Olson in Long Beach CA. in 1986 and they were married in June of 1989. Jan's hobbies included, bowling, pool, playing with his grand and great grandchildren, and watching westerns on TV, however, his true passion was watching his beloved Green Bay Packers and Wisconsin Badgers during football season. He is survived by his only son, Daniel Olson of California, 4 stepchildren: Buffie (Eddie) Touchette of New Boston, TX, Tracey (Andy) Pomerson, Jim (Angie) Holcomb, and Sonora Swords (Kyle Uhl) all of Sioux City, IA, 6 grandchildren: Gary Sewell of Sioux City, IA, Antony Sewell of Waxahachie, TX, Dillion Touchette of New Boston, TX, Vincent Pomerson of Sioux City, IA, Jon Holcomb of Sioux City, IA, Alyssia Holcomb (Destin Reed) of Smithton, IL, Michael Jones of South Sioux City, NE. as well as 6 great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. Brenda loved watching hockey and was a big fan of the Sioux City Musketeers. She also enjoyed watching the Viterbo University volleyball team. Family was important to her, and she would always babysit for family members or friends in need. She volunteered for Toys for Tots and belonged to a bowling and dart league. DONNA JEAN GODBERSEN, 91, of Cherokee, Iowa, passed away on Tuesday morning, November 28, 2023 at MercyOne Siouxland Hospital in Sioux City, Iowa. Funeral services will be held on Friday, December 1, 2023 at 10:30 a. m. at Trinity Lutheran Church in Cherokee, Iowa. Pastor Jonathan Riggert will officiate. Burial will be in the St. John's Lutheran Cemetery at Galva, Iowa. Visitation will be held on Thursday, November 30, 2023 from 4:00 p. m. to 7:00 p. m. with the family present from 5:00 to 7:00 p. m. at the Boothby Funeral Home in Cherokee, Iowa. Donna Jean Jensen was born on May 3, 1932 to Axel and Minnie (Bayer) Jensen on her Grandpa Jensen's farm in Silver Creek Township, Ida County, Iowa. She was welcomed into the family by her brother, Robert. Her father told her he had fished her, his Little Mermaid out of the nearby Maple River. When questioned why she did not have fins, he told her he had legs attached later. Donna lived on her Grandpa's farm until she was almost one year old, when they moved a farm southeast of Schaller. While living there, Donna came down with diphtheria at 3 1/2 years old and for 6 weeks the family was confined to the farm. When Donna was almost 5 years old, due to hard farming times, her parents elected to move back to Holstein, where both grandparents lived. Donna attended all her school years at Holstein, graduating in 1950. After graduation while working at Wallen's Variety Store, she met Loraine, who scheduled a blind date with her brother, Wilbert Godbersen. They started dating in June 1950, until Wilbert entered the service in February 1951. While he was on furlough, they became engaged before he went overseas to serve in Korea. Until his return home to the U. S. , she began working in Dr. Langland's dental office and continued to work for him one year after her marriage. Wilbert and Donna decided to follow the tradition that his older two sisters had started. One married on February 2, 1947, the second on February 12, 1950, and Donna and Wilbert were married on February 22, 1953, at the Methodist Church in Holstein. They lived their first year in an apartment in Holstein while Wilbert owned a gas station. In 1954, a farm came up to rent north of Cushing, where they began farming. They spent three years on that farm, where their son David was born. In 1957, they moved southwest of Holstein for 12 years, where their daughter, Joleen and another son, James came to join their family. The last 16 years was spent on a farm southeast of Galva. Donna adapted to farm life quickly, learning to milk cows by hand, walking bean, caring for a large garden, canning much of the bounty of it. She loved working beside her husband in the field, spent many a day on a tractor in the field or hauling grain to town. In 1980 to help with the declining farm economy, she accepted a job as secretary at Buena Vista University, where she learned to operate a computer. After Wilbert's passing in 1997, she elected to retire in 2000 and moved to Cherokee to be closer to her son and family. Donna worked many jobs throughout her life, her love of the Lord was her chief concern along with her love of her family. She attended many activities of her children, grandchildren, because of the distance they lived from her, she cheered the great-grandchildren's activities on in her heart. She is survived by her children, daughter, Joleen and Bill Werkmeister of El Dorado Springs, MO. ; son James and Bette Godbersen of Cleghorn, IA. ; grandchildren, Rik Rydberg, Jeni Hearting, Taryn, Tyrel, and Trace Godbersen; great grandchildren, Hope, Hunter, and Hailey Hearting; step-grandchildren, Jeremy and Becky Werkmeister, Staci Werkmeister; step-great grandchildren, Cody Werkmeister, Easton Werkmeister, Spencer Gibbs, Spencer's children, Aspen and Oliver; Wilbert's family who survive her are, Elvera Todd, Mary Gebers, Janet Rehse, and Judy Johnston. She was preceded in death by her husband, her oldest son, David Godbersen, grandson, Trent Godbersen, her parents, her in-laws, her brother and wife, Robert and Monica Jensen, plus Wilbert's family, Caroline Niemeier, Loraine (Bertlesen) Dose, Peter Godbersen, plus many nieces, nephews, and a host of friends.Show more

Sherry Ann (Helkenn) Kutzler, 77, of Sioux City, Iowa, formerly of Sloan, Iowa, passed away Tuesday, October 24, 2023, at Westwood Specialty Care, Sioux City, Iowa. Per Sherry's wishes, cremation has taken place. Services are pending with Goslar Funeral Home and Monuments, Onawa, Iowa. Sherry Ann was born May 24, 1946, in Sioux City, Iowa, the daughter of Edward Sr. and Mary (Henderson) Helkenn. She attended East High School and graduated with the class of 1965. Sherry and Marlon Kutzler were united into marriage on January 27, 1990, in the Skien Lutheran Church, Albaton, Iowa. Marlon passed away on December 23, 2022. She was a dedicated employee working for IBP in Quality Control for over thirty years. Sherry loved sports especially the Minnesota Vikings, Minnesota Twins, and the former San Diego Chargers. Sherry enjoyed traveling with Marlon. They would make annual trips to Minnesota for family gatherings, fishing, gambling with her sister, and attending Minnesota Vikings and Twins games. Other memorable trips included salmon fishing with her brother in Oregon and Las Vegas family get-togethers. Survivors include her son, Gary Boykin of Sioux City, Iowa; stepchildren, Rachel (Bryan) Ackerman of Des Moines, Iowa, and Regan (Kevin) Immel of Waukee, Iowa; one brother, Edward (Terri) Helkenn, Jr. of San Diego, California; two sisters, Patricia (David) Bauerly of Sioux City, Iowa, and Debbie (Louis) Jones of Detroit Lakes, Minnesota; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and friends. Patricia A. Probasco, 91, of Sioux City, IA passed away on Wednesday, November 22, 2023. Funeral services will be 11 a. m. Friday, December 1, 2023, at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel in Sioux City with Rev. Roger Madden officiating. No visitation is planned. Burial will be at Logan Park Cemetery. Following the burial, there will be a luncheon at the Sioux City Country Club. Patricia "Pat", the daughter of Ralph and Mabel (Eyerly) Shoemaker, was born August 4, 1932, in Winterset, IA. Pat grew up and attended school in Winterset. During her senior year, she met her future husband, Gene A. Probasco, at a dance in her hometown. After graduating from Winterset High School, she attended Drake University in Des Moines. On March 8, 1952, Pat was united in marriage to Gene A. Probasco in Denver, CO and this union was blessed with three daughters and one son. Early in their marriage, Pat worked different jobs while Gene finished his military service and completed his law degree at the University of Iowa. In 1957, they moved to Sioux City, IA. Gene practiced law in Sioux City and Pat was a stay-at-home mom. After raising her children and once they finished college, she completed her Liberal Arts degree at Morningside College. Over the years, some of Pat’s hobbies included: golfing, reading, playing piano, playing bridge, and creating and enjoying art. She was a member of First United Methodist Church and was active in several organizations including: PEO, St. Luke’s Medical Center Auxiliary, and LaSertoma. She dedicated much of her time to volunteering and serving on the boards of several community organizations. She is survived by her children: Sherry Cobb of Denver, CO, Debbie (Dennis) Amick of Wilmette, IL, Cindy (Jim) Aspeotis of Sioux City, IA and Craig Probasco (Stacey) of Sioux City, IA; nine grandchildren: Lindsay Winters, Jennifer Cobb, Ashley Amick, Brett Amick, Grant Amick, Andy Aspeotis, Alex Aspeotis, Nick Aspeotis, and Kally Probasco; eight great grandchildren; and one sister, Marcia Elder of Bloomfield, IA. She was preceded in death by her parents and husband, Gene on May 26, 1999. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to any Veterans organization of choice.
