Doris Gwendolyn (McDonald) Mayo peacefully went to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on June 20, 2022. Born on November 2, 1932 in North Carolina, she was the eldest daughter of the late Miles James McDonald and Blanche Stevenson McDonald. Her early life was spent on a farm in rural Currituck County, NC with her 3 siblings, where she was affectionately known as the boss of just about any situation! She married Lance Mayo in 1948 and graduated from Currituck County High School in 1950. As the quintessential farmer's wife, Doris enjoyed cooking and canning fresh vegetables, particularly making homemade sweet pickles. She and Lance made the move to Chesapeake, VA in 1954 where they would continue to farm until retirement. In the late 1970s, they settled on Pine Island off of Florida's Southwest coast where she was actively involved with the Pine Island Baptist Church and could be found most Wednesday nights in the kitchen cooking up homemade family meals for church members. She was a fixture there until returning to Chesapeake in 1998 to be closer to her family. Doris loved to travel anywhere and was fond of taking off across the country via car or Winnebago with her husband Lance and spending time out west in Arizona and California with family. She also enjoyed international travel and made the pilgrimage to the Holy Land, and ultimately visited every U. S. state except Hawaii. As an avid reader, she loved to burn the midnight oil in bed with a good book. As a devoted wife and homemaker, Doris spent much of her free time caring for others and was dedicated to her Church organizations and volunteer work which included the soup kitchen, church suppers, and mission work through Centerville Baptist Church and Pine Island Baptist Church. She is survived by her sons Michael Wade Mayo (Carol) of Chesapeake and Steven Anthony Mayo (Jenny) of Laurinburg, NC, three grandchildren: Justin Mayo, Dillon Mayo (Audrey) and Jeff Mayo, her great granddaughter Gwyneth Mayo, and her sister Jennifer McDonald Hughes (Carroll). She was predeceased by her parents, Miles and Blanche McDonald, her husband Lancy Wade Mayo, and her younger siblings: sister Ann McDonald Gregory (Johnie) and brother Miles Warren McDonald (Nancy). The funeral service will be held on Friday, June 24, 2022 at 11:00 am at Centerville Baptist Church, 908 Centerville Turnpike S. Chesapeake, VA 23322. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Centerville Baptist Church in her honor. https://www. churchbasket. com/onetime/centervillebaptistchurch
