EUGENE E. WEILAND, 87, of Cherokee, Iowa, passed away on Wednesday morning, October 18, 2023 at Cherokee Specialty Care. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, October 21, 2023 at 10:30 a. m. at Boothby Funeral Home in Cherokee, Iowa. Pastor Barb Dinelli will officiate. Burial will be at a later date in the Sunset View Cemetery at Washta, Iowa. Visitation will be held on Friday, October 20, 2023 from 4:00 p. m. to 7:00 p. m. with the family present from 5-7:00 p. m. at Boothby Funeral Home in Cherokee, Iowa. Military rites will be performed after the service at the funeral home on Saturday morning by L. A. Wescott Post #2253 and the Cherokee American Legion. Online condolences may be left at www. boothbyfuneral. com. Eugene was born on July 26, 1936 to Earl and Lois (Tarrell) Weiland in Canistota, South Dakota. He attended Quimby Schools, graduating in 1955. While enrolled in high school, he enlisted in the Army National Guard in 1955 prior to graduation but switched and enlisted in the United States Navy. He completed his basic training at Great Lakes, Michigan. While in the U. S. Navy, he took military education classes of boiler maintenance and welding courses. He proudly served from 1955 until 1964. He served on the U. S. S. Wiltsie-DD716 in San Diego, California and the U. S. S. Walke-D. D. 723 in Long Beach, California. He was united in marriage on July 6, 1959 to Bertha "Teeny" Jenkins at Dakota City, Nebraska. They were blessed with three daughters. Gene worked at Wilson Foods in Cherokee from its opening in 1965 until his retirement in 2002. He worked in the power house and helped get the plant ready for its initial opening. After his retirement, he worked at the Cherokee Country Club, helping as a groundskeeper. Gene served as the Washta Fire Chief for many years, was a member of the city council, the housing project, and always was volunteering for things. Gene was always staying busy. In his free time, he enjoyed fishing and camping when he was younger and going gambling with his wife in later years. Gene loved going to all of the grandkids activities and loved his lawn work and snow removal until he was no longer able to. Gene was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Bertha "Teeny" Jenkins Weiland, daughter Sherry Moritz, brothers, Ronny Weiland, Darrell Weiland, and Wayne Weiland, parents-in-law, Harold and Darlene Jenkins, also several brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law. He is survived by his daughters, Kim (Mark) Cronin of Marcus, Iowa and Shelly (Kelly) Cronin of Remsen, Iowa; son-in-law, Terry Moritz of Marcus, Iowa; 9 grandchildren, 19, great grandchildren, and 2 great-great grandchildren, Anthony (Deb) Cronin and their son Devin, Aarron (Shavon) Cronin and their children, Matthew, Abram, Job, Francis, Arlo, James, and Rosie, Steven Cronin, Kyle Cronin, Tanner Cronin (Rebecka Warner) and their son, Brecken, Makenzie Cronin, Kennedy Cronin, Corey (Becca) Moritz and their children, Kallie, Kora, Braxton, Brittany (Blayne) Thelen and their children, Jasper and Emmett, Brooke Moritz (Matt Ankenman) and their children, Cohen, Myles, Corbin, Mallory, Kaysen, and Klayten; brother, Jerry Weiland of Bloomfield, Connecticut; sisters-in-law, Diane Weiland of Hinton, Iowa, Kathy Weiland of South Sioux City, Nebraska, Viola Byerly of Cherokee, Iowa, Alyce Hirschman of Cherokee, Iowa, and Carol Peterson of Culpeper, Virginia, and brother-in-law, Sam Jenkins of Correctionville, Iowa; also several nieces and nephews.Show more
