George R. Herman, Jr.

Oct 17, 1933 - Feb 15, 2024

location-icon

Cody, WY

George R. Herman, Jr., died at home in February at the age of 90. George was raised in New Jersey as the only child of Florence and George R. Herman, Sr., and became a teacher and school superintendent. After the death of his parents, George and his wife Evelyn moved their family to the Big Horn Basin in 1980 to be near her parents, Nick and Louise Eggenhofer. They settled first in Powell (where George taught for NOWCAP) and later moved to Cody. Aside from his family, George’s passions were for antique Fords (especially the 1935 Ford Phaeton that he had owned since he was 17), rooting for Philadelphia sports teams (there’s always next year!), and travel (whether a day trip with the High Country Classics car club, a bus tour of Alaska, or meeting koalas in Australia). A Navy veteran, George was an active member of the Korean War Veterans Association group that helped bring about the Wyoming Veterans Memorial Park. He also was an early volunteer during the renovation of the DeMaris House into the Cody Heritage Museum. George will be greatly missed by his family, including Evelyn, his beloved wife of 66 years and partner in all their adventures, his son George III, daughter Nicole, and grandson Dean. There will be no formal services; the family hopes that those who knew George will remember his warmth and laughter.

Betty Jane Umphlett

May 14, 1932 - Jan 25, 2024

location-icon

Cody, WY

Betty Jane (Janie) Umphlett went to be with her Lord and Savior on January 25, 2024 after a short illness at Cody Regional Health. Janie was born on May 14, 1932. She was adopted shortly thereafter by Gerald and Elizabeth (Betty) Bartlett. Bartlett Lane up the South Fork is named after Janie’s parents (Gerald and Betty Bartlett), who homesteaded the land and owned the dairy farm where she grew up. Janie was very active in her 4-H club and won numerous ribbons and awards. Janie started school in the Irma Flat Country School and finished her schooling at Cody High School and Wheaton College Academy. Janie married James (Jim) Umphlett Sr. on January 22, 1952, and they just celebrated their 72nd anniversary. Jim’s Air Force roommate told him about Janie while he was hospitalized in Texas, and Jim and Janie became pen pals during his time in the Air Force. Shortly after getting out of the Air Force, Jim met Janie in person in November of 1951. After a brief courtship of less than two months, they got married. After spending a short time in North Carolina and Virginia, Jim and Janie returned to Cody to start their family and raise their six boys. She was a devoted wife and mother. She had the enjoyment of raising her boys next to the same dairy farm that she grew up on. Jim built the boys a baseball diamond and basketball court to give Janie a break from their boyhood antics; however, Janie loved watching her boys in sports and grew to love watching sports of all kinds. Janie fiercely loved her boys. Later in her life, following the passing of her adoptive parents, her family expanded when she was reunited with her birth mother and her four brothers and sister from Montana. She was an involved and devoted member of several churches throughout her life, and was a current member of the Cody Bible Church. Loving others was something Janie took to heart. The wall beside her chair was covered with pictures of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and she proudly told visitors about her family. She wrote lots of letters and cards to her family, which will be treasured forever. She will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her. Janie was preceded in death by her parents, Gerald and Betty Bartlett, and her birth mother Martha Bollinger. Janie is survived by her husband, Jim; her 6 boys, Jimmy (Patti) of Powell, WY, Joel (Bonnie) of Columbus, MT, Jon (Stephanie) of Casper, WY, Jeff (Susie) of Cody, WY, Jay (Wendy) of Ft. Scott, KS, and Jerry (Jody) of Newcastle, WY; 12 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren; her sisters Geraldine (Bob) Hall, and Phyllis (Neil) Stanton; and brothers Don (Wanda) Bollinger, Glen (Teena) Bollinger, Sid (Therese) Bollinger, and Dale (Judy) Bollinger. Visitation will be Wednesday, January 31, 2014 from 6:30pm-7:30pm at Ballard Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held Thursday, February 1st, at 10:00am at Cody Bible Church. Memories and condolences can be shared on Janie’s memorial page at www.BallardFH.com To send a flower arrangement to the family of , please .
