Jean Olaveson Hooks February 28, 1939 - November 21, 2023 Our beloved Mother, Jean Olaveson Hooks, peacefully entered the presence of her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on November 21. She was known by her family as "Gran" and lived a full, wonderful, life mentoring and loving her 6 children, 11 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren. Born to Thelma Brewer and Fred McCain on February 28, 1939, she grew up in Roanoke, Alabama. Jean married the late Jack Olaveson in 1955 and together they raised 6 children in LaFayette, Alabama: Jackie (Fred) Wertymer of Roswell, Georgia; Pat (Graham) Weatherstone of Columbus, Georgia; Phillip (Nancy) Olaveson of Opelika, Alabama; David Olaveson of Opelika, Alabama, who preceded her in death; Melissa (Jason) Cherry of Opelika, Alabama; and Jen (John) Heffner of Alpharetta, Georgia. For many years, Jean owned a childrens' store "Youngland" in LaFayette and later opened a daycare. Families always came first and she was naturally gifted with babies and young children. Jean was the first to lend a hand to those in need and a tireless worker with any task or hobby she pursued. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in LaFayette where she was involved with teaching, singing in the choir and volunteering. In her early sixties, Jean decided she wanted an adventure so she packed her car and headed out west to work at Yellowstone National Park in Montana. While there, she met and later married Hugh Hooks and they resided in Texas until Hugh's death. Jean relocated and renovated her father's one hundred-year-old family home in Wedowee, Alabama. It was in Wedowee that she met Sanford Chambers, who became her longtime, devoted companion. In order to be closer to family, in 2014, Jean and Sanford moved to Opelika, Alabama. While living in Opelika, they enjoyed playing weekly bridge games, gardening and entertaining at Jean's home on Anderson Road. Jean and Sanford were frequent travelers both in the United States and abroad. Their favorite trip was to Egypt and included a week-long excursion down the Nile River and a day trip to the Pyramids and Israel. Paul Yosick

Paul Yosick

Age - 81

November 20, 2023

Paul John Yosick, a force of nature with a big and generous heart, passed away peacefully in his home in Alpharetta, Georgia, on November 9, 2023, at age 79. An active swimmer who taught water safety and canoeing, Paul grew up in New Philadelphia, Ohio, and graduated from Tri State College with a bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering. After beginning his professional career, he was drafted to serve in Vietnam, and shortly after returning, met the love of his life, Barbara, who he married the following year. Professionally, Paul worked with air pollution control systems for power plants for over 35 years. He began his career in construction and later moved into sales, traveling extensively to build and grow customer relationships. His busy schedule helped him develop a keen ability to manage time, allowing him to preserve and nurture his many interests, and most importantly, the time spent with family. Paul and Barb moved around the country early in his career. It was during this time that they had three children. In 1979, they moved to Overland Park, Kansas, as Paul was offered an opportunity to open a regional sales office. Paul loved his children, and on most weekends, he could be found cheering them on as they played in various sports. He truly enjoyed being with them and watching as they explored their interests. As a devoted father and grandfather, he taught the importance of education and encouraged saving for the future. Paul was the partner in helping create, inspire, and grow the apparel company, Renee John, with his daughter, Gina. The word "John" in the company name is based on Paul’s middle name. In 2015, Paul and Barbara moved to Alpharetta, Georgia to be closer to their children and grandchildren. They embraced retirement by being active in their community, volunteering with St. Vincent de Paul, and enjoying time at their lake-front home. It would be very common to see Paul and Barb canoeing on the lake and greeting their neighbors. Paul enjoyed watching the Kansas City Chiefs. It would be common to find Paul and Barbara sporting their red Chiefs attire everywhere on game days. Whether supporting veterans or helping meet the needs of those less fortunate, Paul saw the potential in everyone and was always eager to help. He often assisted his family with home improvement projects as he was able to fix nearly anything and had an uncanny ability to resurrect hopelessly broken mechanical items - as evident with the vehicles he kept running long after their paint faded. In addition to his practical help, Paul was relied on for his trusted advice. He was quick to go out of his way to offer his vast knowledge and expertise. For those who had the privilege, knowing Paul revealed an aspect of humanity that was set apart and left a lasting impression. His infectious positivity radiated through his big, loud, playful, and passionate personality and impacted countless lives in profound ways. Paul is survived by his wife of 51 years, Barbara, his sister, Donna, his daughters, Julie (Tom) and Gina (Matt), his son, Mark (Rachel); and his six grandchildren, Henry, Nathan, Frances, Ruby, Stella, and Luke. He was preceded in death by his parents, Rose and John Yosick, and brother, Dale. Paul will be honored with a celebration of life Saturday, December 2nd at 10:30 am at St. Benedict’s Catholic Church, John’s Creek, GA. A reception will immediately follow the ceremony at Six Bridges Brewery in Johns Creek, Georgia. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. Vincent de Paul Society, of which Paul was a devoted volunteer.Show more
