Doris Mae (Kaas) Balvanz, 94, of Grundy Center (formerly of Eldora), fell asleep in the arms of her Lord Friday, September 8th, 2023. Funeral services will be held Saturday, September 16th at 10:30 am at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Eldora. Visitation will be Friday, September 15th from 5:00-7:00 pm at Abels Funeral Home in Eldora. Doris was born April 6th, 1929, to Curtis A. and Norma M. (Staff) Kaas in Trempealeau County, Wisconsin. She grew up in Pigeon Falls, Wis, and graduated from Whitehall High School in 1946. She attended Luther College in Decorah studying to be an English teacher until she found a love for books and switched to Library Science, graduating in 1951. She was a librarian at the Eldora Library for a couple of years until she married Donald F. Balvanz, November 29, 1953 in Pigeon Falls, Wis. Don and Doris made their home east of Eldora on the farm on the county line. Pigs, cows, milk cows, and chickens kept them busy along with field crops. In 1954 they welcomed their first son Andrew; in 1956 Curt came along; Scott arrived in 1962; and a daughter, Marcia, joined them in 1969. In 1974 the family moved to the farm on Hwy 175 where they lived until 1987 when they moved into town. Don and Doris enjoyed playing cards with their friends and going south in the winters to either Galveston, TX, or New Smyrna Beach in Florida. Following Don’s passing, Doris spent more of her winters in Florida, moving there full time a few years later. She enjoyed being able to spend more time with her sister, Louise and husband Dave, and Louise’s family as they both lived in the same gated community in Melbourne. She hosted many dinners with her extended family in Florida and looked forward to visits from her Iowa family too. In the spring of 2018 Doris moved back to Iowa into the assisted living at Arlington Place in Grundy Center, and later moved to Creekside. Most important to her was her strong faith, love and visits from her family, playing cards, listening to music, and reading books. She is survived by her children Andy (Kim) Balvanz, Scott (Kelley) Balvanz, and Marcia (Kelly) Kendall, all of Eldora; Curt (Alyce) Balvanz of Indianola, IA; 13 grandchildren,12 great grandchildren and 1 great, great grandchild; her sister Louise Hauge of Franklin, TN; sisters-in-law Mary Balvanz of Eldora and Jann Bradford of Bakersfield, CA. Doris was preceded in death by her parents Curtis and Norma, husband Don, and great granddaughter Krimsley.

Donna Lou Muller, 93, of Waterloo. formerly of Grundy Center, passed away Wednesday, November 1, 2023, at home while under the care of UnityPoint Hospice with family at her side. A visitation will be held Sunday, November 5th, from 2:00 p. m. to 4:00 p. m. at Abels Funeral & Cremation Service - Engelkes Chapel in Grundy Center. A funeral service will be held Monday, November 6th at 10:00 a. m. at Bethany Presbyterian Church. Donna was born on July 22, 1930, in Sheffield, Iowa, to her parents, Harm and Cleo Van Horn. She was raised in Parkersburg. She was united in marriage to Raymond Muller on August 31, 1948, at Colfax Presbyterian Church in Holland, Iowa. They resided in the rural Reinbeck area where they farmed until 1981, when they retired from farming and moved to Grundy Center. From 1981 to 1997, they were joint custodians at the Grundy County Courthouse. Donna was an avid cook and known especially for her love of making delicious pies. She was also a collector of many types of dolls, as well as bells, of which she amasses a collection of over 500 various types of bells from antique to state souvenirs to holiday bells. She was known for sharing her collection for displays at the courthouse. Donna also loved gardening and preserving foods, but her biggest joy was her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Donna and her husband, Ray, were also devoted members of Bethany Presbyterian church for many years. Donna is survived by her three children, Darlene (John) Kostohryz of Cresco, Joyce (Paul Rottinghaus) Hartke of Waterloo, and Wendel (Delane) Muller of Nashua; 3 grandchildren; 6 step-grandchildren; 5 great-grandchildren; 5 great-great-grandchildren; as well as many other friends and family. Donna was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond, of 66 years; her parents Harm and Clean Van Horn; 3 sisters, Lois Syhlman, Mabel Spieker, and Darlene Van Horn; 4 brothers, Jim Van Horn, Richard Van Horn, Melvin Van Horn, and Larry Van Horn; and one grandson, Jason Davis. Memorials may be directed to the family, which will be used for creating a memorial in Donna’s memory.Show more

Roxanne Argyros

Roxanne (Burkett) Argyros, 69, passed away at her home in Eldora, Iowa on Wednesday, October 18, 2023 from complications of ALS. Roxanne was born on August 6, 1954 in Chicago Heights, IL to Louis and Wanda Burkett. The family relocated to Burlington, Iowa in 1964. Roxanne attended Sunnyside Elementary and Oak Street Middle School, before graduating from Burlington High School in 1972. While attending high school, she worked at the Steak-O-Rama restaurant and met a co-worker, Jerry Argyros, who became her husband the following year. They were married in Cedar Falls, Iowa on May 28, 1973. In May of this year, they observed their 50th wedding anniversary. Roxanne and Jerry worked in the restaurant business for 36 years. They were owners of Jerry's Pizza & Steakhouse in Belle Plaine, Iowa (1977-1986) and Eldora, Iowa (1986-2006). Jerry's Pizza & Steakhouse restaurants were always a local favorite! They took great pride in providing good food and good service in a family friendly environment. During these busy years, they proudly welcomed two sons. Nick in 1978 and Jim in 1980. While Jerry managed the family restaurant business, Roxanne devoted most of her time to raising their two sons and supporting their many activities. In 2006, Roxanne began a second career working at the State Training School for Boys in Eldora as a Receptionist. She remained there for 14 years before retiring in September 2020. What brought her the most joy was spending time with her grandchildren, Maxx and Mia, and watching them grow and learn!Roxanne leaves behind a family who loved her dearly and will miss her always. Husband Jerry and their two sons, Nick Argyros (Angie Hullinger) of Olathe, KS; and Jim Argyros (Maagen) and their two children (Maxx and Mia) of West Des Moines, IA. She is also survived by her brother, Mike Burkett of Sunrise Beach, MO and sisters Brenda Rodgers (Keith) of Lee's Summit, MO and Cindy Boothe (Steve Klein) of West Burlington, IA, and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents (Louis and Wanda Burkett) and nephew (Tanner Boothe). Although living 3 hours away from her parents, Roxanne was very involved in their care during their aging years. She also adored her nephew Tanner Boothe who passed as a toddler. It's our hope and prayer that these three faces were the first to greet her in Heaven with open arms!There will be a visitation to greet family and friends from 4:00-6:00 pm on Friday, October 20, 2023 at Creps Chapel, Abels Funeral and Cremation Service, 905 Edgington Ave. , Eldora, Iowa 50627. Karen Granzow

Age - 83

Karen Lea (Clark) Granzow, of Eldora, Iowa, passed away on Oct 9, 2023, at St Luke's Hospital in Cedar Rapids, she was 83. A "Celebration of her Life" will be held in the summer of 2024 with a date still to be determined. Memorials may be directed to the family at 710 Washington St, Eldora, Iowa 50627. Funeral arrangements are under the guidance of the Surls Funeral Home in Iowa Falls. Karen was born on Oct 29, 1939, to Merrill and Maude Clark of Hubbard, Iowa. She graduated from Hubbard High School in 1958 and grew up in the Hubbard / Eldora area. On October 4, 1959, Karen was united in marriage to Glen George Granzow of Eldora, son of George and Gladys Granzow at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Eldora. Karen and Glenn moved to Phoenix, Arizona in January 1970 where she worked briefly at Diamonds Department Store before accepting a position at the Phoenix Zoo. It was a career she truly enjoyed and loved wearing her khaki shorts, seeing the animals every day, driving around in her little golf cart and taking her kids and grandkids to the Zoo lights every Christmas holiday. Karen was an avid sports fan with the Phoenix Suns and the Arizona Cardinals as her favorite teams. She loved watching her stories every morning and feeding the various birds, deer and other critters that made their way by her place in Eldora. One of her favorite pass times was sitting outside with her neighbors Darlene and Clarence and enjoying the beautiful Iowa days. She resided at the Pine Lakes Apartments in Eldora. An avid crafter, one of her favorite things to do was make tissue boxes in holiday themes and giving them to family and friends. She also made dish towels to hang on the refrigerator and doll house furniture for her granddaughters. She passed along her many family recipes to her daughters and granddaughters by participating in a family cookbook that is now a treasured legacy of her and the family traditions of baking holiday cookies and treats which her granddaughters continue the tradition every year. Karen is survived by her four children, six grandchildren and one great grandson: sons Glendon of Hubbard and Jason (Debbie) of Eldora; daughters Tamie of Seattle, WA and Teresa Gilbreath of Phoenix, AZ; sister, Betty (Dean) Schnormeier and brother, Dwight (Candi) Clark. She is also survived by five beautiful granddaughters: Tiffany, Keely, Linzy and Riley Gilbreath and Dylan Granzow, one amazing grandson Zach Adams, a very special great grandson Dax along with many nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family whom she loved very much. She was preceded in Death by her husband Glen, her brother Archie (Gladys) Forbes and both of her parents.Show more

Lowell Trepp

Age - 84

Lowell Lee Trepp, age 84 passed away on October 5, 2023. He was born August 7, 1937 in Fort Dodge, Iowa, son of Alma and Dick Trepp. They moved to Reinbeck in 1941 and has lived there ever since. He went to Reinbeck schools, graduating with the class of 1957. Lowell went into the Army for six months the fall of 1957. He married Ruth Schildroth on August 10, 1958. Started his first job May 1st at Bearing Service Co. in Waterloo, later worked at Zaneta Mills, John Deere, Ribco Inc. , and finaly at the John day Company for 41 years as a territory Manager, retiring in 2003. He spent the summers later in Minnesota for ten years at the Lake Home, and the winters in Texas. Lowell is survived by his wife, Ruth Ann Trepp of 65 years, three sons: Greggory (Janet) Trepp of Reinbeck, Calvin (Sara) Trepp of Greene, IA, Brian (Nicky) Trepp of Sealy, TX, eight grandchildren and great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother. A visitation service will be held at the United Methodist Church in Reinbeck, Ia on Saturday, October 14, 2023 from 11:30am to 12:30pm. Austin Fernow

On September 22, 2023, Austin "Woody" Fernow made his final transfer after battling Parkinson’s disease for several months. He was a resident at Creekside, Inc. in Grundy Center. No funeral services are scheduled at this time, but a celebration of life and memorial event will be planned at a future date. Austin "Woody" Owen Fernow was born April 4, 1933, in Marion, Iowa, to Wilson Clark Fernow and Marguerite Austin Fernow. He grew up in Cedar Rapids, graduating from Franklin High School in 1951, and then Coe College in 1955 with a sociology degree and series of family moves during a 22-year Air Force career. Military duties featured computer programming and radar intercept control. Austin attained the rank of Lt. Colonel, earning the Bronze Star and other service awards. In 1976, Austin retired from military service, assuming the role of equipment manager for Evans Farms. Throughout his life, Austin had been involved with Boy Scouts of America, as a Scout himself (achieving the rank of Eagle Scout), then as a volunteer in many leadership positions, with many councils, at many levels, earning many awards, including the Silver Beaver. Austin was preceded in death by his parents, sisters Louise (Dale) Morgan and Dorothy (Glenn) Rapp, stepfather Harold Henning, and stepbrother Gene Henning. Survivors are his wife, Judith; daughter Jean (Don) Garaventa of rural Reinbeck; son Nathan (Deb) of Birmingham, Alabama; son Douglas (Ruth) of Corinth, Texas; 5 grandchildren; and 3 great-grandchildren.Show more

Donald Pruisner

Age - 94

Donald (Don) Arthur Pruisner, 94, passed away peacefully on September 8, 2023, of complications of a well-lived life. Don was born on June 26, 1929, to Henry and Grace (Freese) Pruisner in a farmhouse four miles northwest of Dike, Iowa, the fourth of six children. Don graduated from Dike High School in 1947, worked at Rath Packing Company just long enough to know he did not want that career, and began farming with his brother Kenny. He continued to farm with his son Kevin. Don married Leona Aswegan on May 10, 1950. Don and Leona farmed side-by-side, eventually building their family farm operation one mile from where Don was born. Don and Leona were active in their churches, Salem Lutheran and then Fredsville Lutheran. When the last child went to college they began wintering in south Texas, square dancing and playing cards till the cows came home. Don and Leona were married 73 years; his second loves include farming, Leona’s pie (!), John Deere, more farming, being with family, and winning card games. Surviving Don is his wife Leona, four sons Randy (Lorie) of Spirit Lake, Kendall (Peggy) of Clear Lake, Kevin (Pat) of Dike, Darwin (CoLeen) of Boulder, CO, and one daughter Robin (Mark Venner) of McCallsburg, 10 grandchildren, and 20 great-grandchildren. Visitation is planned at Fredsville Lutheran Church on Wednesday, September 13, 5-7 pm. Funeral services will be held at Fredsville Thursday, September 14, 10:30 am. Burial at Oak Hill Cemetery in Parkersburg will follow a proper Lutheran funeral lunch.Show more

Janice Butler Granner passed away peacefully in Seward, Nebraska on Sept. 2, 2023. Funeral services will be Friday September 15 at 10:30 am at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Eldora, Iowa. Visitation will be Thursday September 14th from 4-7 PM at Abels Funeral Home in Eldora. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to Good Shepherd Preschool, Eldora, Dorothy's Senior Center in Eldora, or to the family c/o Tammy Mackie, 847 N. 6th Street, Seward, NE 68434. Alma Janice Butler was born on a farm near Owasa, Iowa on January 14, 1932, to Milo and Ethel Mae (Gast) Butler. She attended Owasa Consolidated School, graduating in 1949. Janice graduated from the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls in 1952 with an elementary teaching degree. She taught 3rd grade for 3 years in Grundy Center, and 5th grade in Iowa Falls for part of one year. She later taught at the Good Shepherd Preschool at St. Paul Lutheran Church for 15 years, serving as director for many of those years. Janice met her husband, Stanley, in the 1st grade at Owasa. They started dating their junior year in high school and were married on June 5, 1954, at the First Baptist Church in Eldora. They farmed the Granner family farm for 43 years. They were active members of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Eldora, where Janice was a member of LWML and the Priscilla Guild, and taught confirmation classes for many years. Stanley and Janice raised three children - Tammy, Todd and Andy - and were always willing to volunteer for 4-H, Little League, or youth group activities as needed. Family was important to Janice, and their home often served as a gathering place for family, especially for the Butler and Granner cousins. Janice and Stanley retired to Eldora in 1997. They served on church committees and boards, delivered Meals on Wheels, and were active at Dorothy's Senior Center. They loved to travel, especially to visit their grandchildren and other family members all around the country. They also took trips to Hawaii, Germany, Austria and England. Janice was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Stanley, her sister Norma Butler Whiting and her brother George Butler. She is survived by her children Tammy Granner Mackie (David), of Seward, NE; Todd Granner (Bretta) of Atlantic, IA; and Andy Granner (Jami) of Sacramento, CA. Left to cherish her memory as an awesome Grandma are Chris Mackie, Seward, NE; Carlin (Ayshia) Mackie-Stephensen, New Orleans, LA; Caitlin Mackie, Huntsville, AL; Curtis Mackie, Lincoln, NE; Ben Granner, Sacramento, CA; Emma Granner (Quenton Hagen), Sacramento, CA; Kelsey Granner, Sacramento, CA; Clay Stevens (Kara), Roseville, CA; and Sam Granner, Atlantic, IA. Marlys Karkosh

Marlys L. Karkosh, 87, of Cedar Falls, IA, formerly of Reinbeck and Hudson, IA: passed away of natural causes on Sunday, August 27, 2023, at St. Lukes Hospital in Cedar Rapids. A memorial visitation will be held on Monday, September 4, 2023, from 4:30 p. m. to 7:30 p. m. at the family farm, 12416 Hicks Road, Hudson, IA. Funeral service will be held on Tuesday, September 5, 2023, at 10:30 am at the Union Congregational United Church of Christ in Reinbeck. Burial will follow at the Reinbeck Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to the family which will then be distributed to Reinbeck Day Care, the UCC of Reinbeck and the Western Home Foundation. Marlys was born on the family farm south of Traer on October 1, 1935, to her parents Edward and Lorena (Ewoldt) Podhajsky. Marlys attended country school and graduated from Traer High School in 1953. Marlys went on earn a BS degree in Home Economics at Iowa State College in 1957. Marlys was united in marriage to Gary Karkosh in 1958 and lived in Reinbeck for 7 years. From there Gary’s work led them to Cedar Rapids, IA then to Naperville, IL then to Libertyville, IL before returning to the family near Hudson in 1973. Marlys was a home economics teacher at Gladbrook and Reinbeck before starting their family. After returning to the farm Marlys worked in several support roles at Reinbeck Community and GR school for 25 years, retiring in 1998. Marlys was a loving wife and devoted mother of 3 boys, Alan, Brian, and Kedric. Her job allowed her time to tend to her family as well as her gardens. As a farm wife she was known for her wonderful meals and lunches in the field which she continued to provide till they moved off the farm to Reinbeck. In 2011 Gary and Marlys moved to the Western Home Community in Cedar Falls. Marlys and Gary enjoyed the farm up until the end of both of their lives. They made the time to visit a lot of places around the US and world with family and friends. They also made sure to take the time to visit with their children and grandchildren who were spread out across the US. Family was important to them. They had a wonderful group of friends that enjoyed getting together socially, eating, biking and playing cards. Marlys and Gary made a wonderful team that supported and loved each other and their families and friends. Marlys is survived by her sons Alan (Sarah), Brian, and Kedric (Robin): grandchildren Kyle, Shane (Maddie), Brody, Seth (Brianna) great grandson Oliver, Lacee (Brandon) Gassman, Kolin and Alex Karkosh; sisters Myrna Dostal and Marian Dostal: nephew and nieces Calvin (Rebecca) Dostal, Brenda (Ed) Hoeg, Carrie (Matt) Carlton, Genise (Mark) Troutman; brother-in-law Clayton Karkosh and sister in law Kathryn (Jared) Owen and their sons Garrett (Tracy) and Darrick Owen. She was preceded in death by her husband Gary and her parents.Show more
