Judy Dean Bessie Saul Gresham, 84, of Salem, Va., passed away at home on February 23, 2024. She grew up in western Roanoke County, the daughter of Henry L. and Evelyn B. Saul. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her infant daughter, Julie Ann and sister, Twila Turner. Judy began dating James L. (Jimmy) Gresham in high school after meeting at a mutual friend’s party. They began their lifelong romance with Judy trying to teach Jimmy the Jitterbug. They were married three years later and enjoyed 65 wonderful years together in Salem. Judy was a loving wife, mother, Nan, sister, and friend. Spending time with her immediate and large extended family was the joy of Judy’s life. Holidays, special occasions, and family reunions brought an abundance of laughter and precious memories. For more than three decades, she loved cooking Sunday dinners for her immediate family; her specialty being her birthday “big cake” for the grandchildren. Judy was raised as a member of Fort Lewis Baptist Church and after marrying Jimmy, joined him as an active member of First United Methodist Church. Over the years, she served her church as a Sunday School teacher, as a member of Circle #3, and on various committees. She was a “numbers” person and after graduating from Andrew Lewis High School in 1957, began working at Farmer’s National Bank. She was employed there for 13 years, achieving the title of Branch Manager, until she made the decision that staying at home to focus on raising her two children was more important. She enjoyed playing cards with close friends, playing the stock market, reading the daily ticker and was always on the lookout for a good tip from like-minded friends and relatives. Surviving family members include her children, James A. Gresham and wife, Loretta; daughter, Alison G. Sledd; grandchildren, James L. Gresham II and wife, Julia, Rachel R. Gresham, Caleb M. Sledd and wife, Sarah, and Anna M. Sledd; great-grandson, George L. Gresham. Also surviving are sisters, Norma S. Wassum and Cindy S. Manning; two aunts and many cousins, nieces, and nephews. The family will welcome friends for a time of visitation on Friday, March 1, 2024, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at John M. Oakey and Son Chapel, Salem. Va. Elaine Tyler Lee

Dec 29, 1936 - Feb 21, 2024

location-icon

Salem, VA

On February 21, 2024, Elaine Tyler Lee departed the confines of her earthly body to reside among the angels and Christ our Lord. She was born on December 29, 1936, to Fleda McDaniel Tyler and James Harvey Tyler. During her youth, she grew up in the Portsmouth, Va. area while her father worked in Newport News. She would often recall the “blackouts” that occurred during World War II. After the war, she and her parents moved back to Salem, Va. where she remained a lifelong resident and community member. Elaine attended and graduated from the School of Nursing at Roanoke Memorial Hospital (RMH) in 1957. She worked at RMH in the operating room for her entire career until her retirement in 1999. As such, her legacy lives on through the many nurses and residents she mentored over the years. Elaine truly enjoyed her second family of the operating room and had many lifelong friendships with her fellow co-workers. While having a career, she also had her own family. She had two sons, Mark Allen Lee and David Tyler Lee. She devoted her life to caring for her sons and was a strong and independent role model. She also assured that both her sons graduated from college and took great pride in their accomplishments. As her sons married and had families of their own, Elaine found great joy in her extended family. Mark married Rhonda Haga Lee and they had two sons, Johnathan James Lee and Scott Tyler Lee. Johnathan (Jessie) has two sons, Dylan Scott Lee and Nathan Cristopher Lee. Ty married Gail Hottel Lee and had two daughters, Olivia Lee Wolfe (Jonathon) and Angela Danielle Lee (Austin). Elaine was a lifelong member at Fort Lewis Baptist Church and is believed to be the longest living member. While worshipping there, she also served as a Sunday school teacher, deacon, and was in the choir. She enjoyed reading the Bible, teaching, and serving in her church. Her faith was a very important part of Elaine’s earthly life. Elaine, who was an only child, cared for both of her aged parents. When caring for her mother she had to use her nursing skills, but dutifully and lovingly cared for both of her parents as they also transitioned from Earth to Heaven. Elaine was a very devoted daughter, mother, mother-in-law, and grandmother. She was also a compassionate nurse and a loyal friend, as well as a believer in Jesus Christ our Lord and Father. May she rest in eternal peace. In lieu of flowers, please consider contributions to Fort Lewis Baptist Church at 4215 W. Main Street, Salem, Va. 24153; Or, the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation Charlotte Chapter, 4600 Park Road Suite 100, Charlotte, N.C. 28209 Services will be held Monday, February 26, 2024, at John M.
