DANFORTH - It is with heavy and broken hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved mother, Maxine (Gray) Virgie. Our mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and sister, went to her heavenly home on December 1, 2023. A pillar of strength, she touched the lives of everyone around her with her warmth, kindness, unwavering love and tremendous sense of humor. Mum was more than a mother she was an inspiration of compassion, a source of endless wisdom, and the heartbeat of our family. Her nurturing spirit filled our lives with laugher and love. Our mother was born on May 20, 1931, to Richard "Dick" Gray and Leone (Neal) in Danforth. She grew up on a farm in Eaton, with her siblings, Anita, Joanne, Vance, Lucille, Richard, Beverly, Roger and Rex. She often reminisced about her childhood and life on the farm. She attended school in Eaton, and graduated from East Grand High School. She married our father, Harry Gillis, raised their five children and lived in Danforth, for over 27 years. In 1979 she remarried to Dr. W. A. Virgie and lived in Houlton, for 30 years. She returned 10 years ago to her beloved Danforth, that she always considered home. During her lifetime Mum had a diverse array of jobs always with unwavering commitment. At age 70 she saw an unmet need for Senior citizens and opened Graymoor Adult Family Care Home in Houlton. She owned and operated this business until her diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer. In her spare time, Mum loved to make quilts, read, and at age 50 became an avid golfer. She was a member of the Houlton Country Club and a lifelong member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. She will be dearly missed by the loves of her life, June and her late husband, Shirley Williams, John and Kenny Gillis, Susan and Buddwood Shain, Scott and Barbara Gillis and Molly and Paul Sutorius. She was Mammy to her nine beautiful grandchildren, Nikki and Donny Ledbetter, Budd and Dawn Shain, Jordan and Cindy Shain, Robby Gillis, Anna and Nathan Horn, Mia and Jake Del Gais, Jack and Michelle Sutorius, Johnna and Marco Tropepe, and Jared and Mary Namm. Mum was blessed with thirteen sweet great-grandchildren, Will and Neve Ledbetter, Harrison and Miles Shain, Jackson and Willow Shain, Aidan and London Tropepe, Gia and Chloe Namm, Ellie Foss, Isla and Leo Horn. In lieu of flowers, we respectfully, ask donations in her memory be sent to the Community News that kept her in touch with home. They can be sent to Community News, P. O. Box 303, Danforth, ME 04424. A special thank you to Dr. Cavalari, nurses and staff at Houlton Regional Hospital for exemplary care of our mother's last days. A graveside celebration of our mother's life will be held in the Spring of 2024. How does one say good-bye to their precious mother? We don't, but say we will see you again in Heaven. Until then we will see her in the legacy she leaves with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren and the memories that death cannot take from us. May she rest in eternal piece until we meet again.Show more

Michael Mills Sr

Michael Mills Sr

Age - 77

November 29, 2023

Michael Blake Mills Sr. , beloved husband and grandpa, passed away November 25, 2023, after a short battle with cancer. Mike was born August 15, 1946, the son of Gregory and Emogene (McLaughlin) Mills. He grew up in Monticello, where he lived, gardened, and collected many "items" we laugh about today that he loved to say, "Someone might need someday. "Mike was deeply rooted in the land and the simple pleasures of life. Raised on the Fletcher Road farm, he developed a love for the soil and the hard work it demanded. His steadfast work ethic and heart for tinkering led him to life on the open road, driving trucks for Carter Brothers, C&W, and H O Bouchard. There wasn't a spot on this side of the Mississippi, you could mention that Mike couldn't give you a landmark for from all his adventures. He was a man you could count on for direction in life and on the road. Though he found solace in the hum of an engine and the open highway, his heart remained tethered to the countryside. He found great joy in the quiet moments, his green thumb and love for cultivating life evident in his vegetable garden and the mowing of his lawns, what became therapeutic tasks he approached with care and precision. After leaving the open road behind him, you could be sure to find him at one of his faithful fishing holes: the one with the fish, the one with the fiddleheads, and the one with all his friends (also known as Beals Country Store. ) His connection to the town of Monticello was a thread that ran through the tapestry of his life as these regular visits to Beals, or the post office were more than errands -- they were opportunities to catch up on the happenings of the community, to share in the stories of neighbors, and to immerse himself in the pulse of small-town life. The love story between Mike and his devoted wife, Melissa, was at the heart of his life. For 54 years, their partnership was a testament to enduring love and the strength which comes from facing life's challenges hand in hand. Melissa was not only his spouse but his confidante, his anchor, and the source of immeasurable joy. If Melissa was his heart, his family was his heartbeat. Mike's love for his grandchildren knew no bounds, each a cherished soul who brought a unique sparkle to his eyes. However, it was in the playful laughter and innocent joy of his great-grandsons that a special kind of magic unfolded. It was the camaraderie of a close-knit community and the great love of his wife and family that made up the building blocks of the man we remember today. Mike is survived by his wife, Melissa (Sansom) Mills; children, Michael Jr. (Angela) Mills, Reggie (LeAnne) Bragdon, Denise (Don) Gouin, and Greg (Nannette) Mills; grandchildren, Haven, Sierra and husband, Jasper, Samantha, Bianca, Briar, and Bryce; great-grandsons, Channing, Calvine, and Lion; sisters, Connie (Mills) Sandstrom, Peggy (Mills) Keck, Sue (Mills) and husband, Kenny Dion; and his extended family. In addition to his parents, Mike was predeceased by several aunts and uncles. In honoring Michael Blake Mills, let us take a moment to appreciate the beauty of a well-tended garden, the tranquility of a quiet fishing spot, and the satisfaction of a job well done and a family well loved. As we say our goodbyes, we remember him not only for the miles he traveled but for the roots he planted. Relatives and friends are welcome to call 12-1 p. m. Saturday, December 2, 2023, at Military St. Baptist Church, 307 Military St. , Houlton, where a celebration of Mike's life will be held at 1 p. m. with the Rev. Randall Burns officiating. Those attending are welcome to share conversation and refreshments at the Church Fellowship Hall, immediately following the service. Interment will be held at the Foster Cemetery, Monticello, following the reception. Those wishing to remember Michael in a special way may consider gifts in his memory to the Bridge to Hope, c/o Dunn Funeral Home, 11 Park St. Houlton, ME 04730. Rachel Sylvester Good died peacefully at her home surrounded by her family on November 13, 2023 at age 81. Born with the gift of connecting with people of all ages, Rachel built her life on reaching out to others. To everyone who knew her, she was a loving life force. She was a sparkling beauty with asharp wit. In her thoughtful and gentle way, she always took time to share a moment of friendly and caring conversation with anyone she encountered. Laughter, warmth and her beautiful smile graced us all. Born on April 6, 1942 in Houlton, Maine to Erma Allen Sylvester and Fred Sylvester Jr. , Rachel graduated from Houlton High School in the class of 1960 and began her studies in elementary education at University of Maine at Farmington, was a member of Psi Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority and finished her Associates Degree at University of Maine at Presque Isle. During this time, Rachel fell in love with Tom Good, a Monticello boy, who won her heart at the Gentle Memorial Rec dances in Houlton. They married in August of 1963 and moved to their "honeymoon house" on Fletcher Road, where they began to build an extraordinary life and partnership. Their sixty year marriage was an example of diplomacy, patience and trust in oneanother. As the wife of a potato farmer, Rachel elevated everyone's spirits during the shared work of farming. She recruited and led crews of seed cutters, prepared endless delicious meals during spring planting and fall harvest. She worked laughing and talking of life, love and dreams during the long hours. Her butterscotch bottom rolls, strawberry shortcake, apple pies and homemade bread kept everyone in our family so very happy. In her husband, Tom's words, " She protected and raised three beautiful children, and let me go to work to become a provider, farmer and a good father. We built our success together. "We remember her many lighted contributions to our lives, her commitment to family and friendship, and her dedication to being of service in support of her beloved Aroostook County community. Rachel was a passionate advocate for youth mentorship and community arts which included work as a founding board member of the Houlton High School Alumni Association's Dollars for Scholars and North Star News, a director of the Houlton Youth Center, a Girl ScoutTroop leader, a board member of Visions Community Arts, a First Baptist Church Youth Fellowship Sunday School teacher, and a volunteer for the Meduxnekeag Canoe Race and Wellington School Ski Club. She served as a selectperson and head of the Recycling, Landfill and Solid Waste Committee for the Town of Monticello. Rachel is survived by her soulmate and husband, Thomas Lee Good, and their three children: Aimee Good, her husband Joshua Margolis, and their daughter Matilda; Eric Good and his wifeLisa Good and their children, Maxwell, Madeline, Tyler, Carter and Sydney; Paige (Good) Hilts and her husband Thomas Hilts, and their sons Atticus, Odin and Odysseus, along with great grandchildren, Tanner Carmichael and Cooper Bartlett. She is also survived by her sister,Kimball Sylvester Rinfret (widow of Robert Rinfret), sister-in-law Nancy Good Cayford and husband Phillip Cayford, brother-in-law Daniel Webb (widower of her sister- in-law Joanne Good Webb). Rachel is predeceased by her dear parents Erma and Fred and her brother Torrey Sylvester, who is survived by his wife, Jennifer (Fusedale) Sylvester; along with many beloved nieces and nephews who considered Aunt Rachel their second mother. The Good family also shares its utmost gratitude to the incredible women - Jennifer (Trecartin) Smith, Debbie Upton, Amanda Folsom, and Suzette Holmes - who created a circle of care and friendship with Rachel as she courageously lived with Parkinson's Disease in the later part of herlife.
