Dale Perkins

Age - 69

November 24, 2023

"Dale Lamar Perkins, whose journey began on May 12, 1954, in Satellite Beach, Florida, left an indelible mark on the world. His life, a vibrant tapestry of experiences and love, concluded on November 20, 2023, in Powell, Ohio. Born to Cloyce and Lorena "Jan" Perkins, Dale grew up amidst the bustling energy of a large family, alongside siblings Susan, Daniel, Dennis, Sandra, Donald, Dwayne, and Edward. Dale's life was defined by his steadfast commitment to service and duty. Enlisting in the Army in March 1975, he served with distinction as a tank crewman and supervising recruiter until he received an honorable discharge in March 1981. These formative years honed his resilience and character, qualities he carried throughout his life. In 1976, Dale's heart connected with Cindy Rudolph, and their union brought forth children Michael and Christina Perkins. Although their paths diverged, this chapter of his life was rich with love and growth. Michael fondly recalls moments spent with his father. Saturdays were often spent immersed in a world of cartoons, a simple yet valued ritual. Dale introduced Michael to the art of fishing, a skill that intertwined patience with the joy of a catch. Their conversations, often playfully interrupted by the distractions of a TV show, resumed once the commercials began. Bonding over weekend Blockbuster rentals and dining out became shared adventures. Together, they tackled car repairs and house projects, creating not just solutions but memories. A highlight for Michael was mastering chess, a game where he finally outplayed his father, and learning to ride a motorcycle under Dale's guidance. These moments, rich in learning and laughter, remain Michael's valued memories of time spent with his father. In 1990, a new chapter unfolded in Dale's life when he met Pamela Alexander. Their partnership quickly flourished, evolving into a life abundant with dancing, love, and steadfast mutual support. Dale wholeheartedly embraced Pamela's children, Kelly and Jenny, fostering a harmonious family dynamic. He played a significant role in their journey to adulthood, offering guidance and support throughout the many chapters of their lives. Dale, affectionately known as "PaDale," deeply valued his role as a grandfather and actively participated in his grandchildren's lives. His commitment to Jesse and Jamie was apparent from their infancy, beginning with weekend babysitting and progressing into providing guidance and assistance in many small, yet significant ways, as they grew into young adults. Jamie fondly recalls a specific journey with Dale from Texas to Arkansas to visit Grandma Pam, a trip Dale made when Kelly was unavailable. She will always value his readiness to listen, offer advice, and solve problems. For Elaina, Alexander, and Benjamin, Dale was a constant and supportive figure. He was involved in their daily lives, regularly sharing breakfast, transporting them to various extracurricular activities, and providing steadfast support. Dale's relationship with Connor and Trenton was highlighted by joyful experiences, including beach outings and a memorable trip to Universal Studios. These activities were more than just recreational; they were opportunities to forge lasting connections and create valued memories. Dale's generosity and willingness to help others were central to his personality. He was industrious, dedicated, and always ready to offer assistance when necessary. His sense of humor often shone through in his lighthearted teasing. Dale stood energetically resolute in his beliefs and convictions. Within his family, he was a trusted advisor, providing practical guidance for life's numerous "adulting" challenges. In the automotive industry, Dale's career was notable for its consistent honesty. He was committed to meeting his customers' needs while upholding ethical standards. As a service manager, Dale's work ethic, steadfast support for his employer, and commitment to achieving customer satisfaction truly represented the essence of a hardworking American. Dale's enduring legacy is carried forward by his spouse Pamela, his children Michael and his wife Peggy, Christina, Kelly and her partner Morgan, Jenny and her husband Adam, and his valued grandchildren Connor, Trenton, Jesse, Jamie, Elaina, Alexander, and Benjamin. His life, exemplified by duty, resilience, loyalty, and a deep commitment to family, leaves a lasting impact beyond valued memories. His life lessons continue to resonate and inspire those he touched. We lovingly remember and celebrate Dale, an extraordinary man who was not only a devoted father and grandfather but also a valued partner and an exemplary American. Lola Edwards

Lola Edwards

Age - 100

November 13, 2023

"Lola Ann Zimmerman Davis Edwards passed away October 24, 2023 at the age of 100. Born on February 24, 1923 in Springfield, Ohio to Joseph and Ida Zimmerman, she grew up in Plain City, Ohio. She was the third of four children to survive to adulthood. After graduating from Plain City High School in 1941, she entered the Mt. Carmel School of Nursing. She started in September, 1941. After the bombing at Pearl Harbor, her student training days took on more responsibilities as many registered nurses entered the services. She graduated in 1944 and worked at Mt. Carmel hospital for about 6 months. In early 1945, she entered the Army as a surgical nurse. She was stationed at the Green Brier Army Hospital, WV where cutting edge surgery was being taught and performed. Late in 1945, at the end of WWII, she volunteered to be a part of the Army of the Occupation. Landing in Le Harve, France on Christmas Day, 1945, she was stationed at the 239 General Hospital in Paris. While there, she witnessed the relighting of the Arc De Triomphe. Late October 1946, she was discharged from the Army and returned to Columbus, OH to work in surgery at Mt. Carmel Hospital. She met Dr. Mel Davis, a Navy veteran doing a pathology residency soon after, and on June 28, 1947, they were married at First Congregational Church. They went on to have nine children; Tamzan Ann (Lou) Varga, Amanda Sue (Vic) Ryan, Candace Kay (Eric) Greene, Mellar Pilgrim (Deborah Doan) Davis, Sarah Jane (Richard) Early, Rebecca Lou (Larry) Williams, Gretchen Lee (Tom) Hoover, Robert Peter (Martine Pfeffer) Davis, and Michael Powell (Jeanie Kelly) Davis, 26 grandchildren and 35 great-grandchildren. Lola, affectionately called Zimmy (a nickname from Mel) by family and close friends, was married to Mel until his death on September 15, 1997 (50 years). Three years later, Lola married William Edwards, an acquaintance from her very early days at Mt. Carmel and a widower. They were married until his death on April 26, 2015. Lola was a 3 lb. premature baby, a busy child and always a feisty lady. She managed a household with 9 children. She was very involved at First Congregational Church serving as one of the early female deacons, a member of the house and grounds committee, and with two friends, starting the Pretiola Shop, which sold fair trade goods that operated until 1999. She enjoyed sewing, making clothes and other items including costumes for the annual Christmas pageant at First Church. Zimmy also was a founding member and president of the Auxiliary of the American Society of Clinical Scientists, an organization in which Mel was an active member. Mel and Zimmy loved to travel, both stateside and abroad, and were able to do so as their children left the home. Zimmy always loved art and was also an avid reader. Together, she and Mel taught their children to appreciate learning, no matter the subject, and to do their best, no matter the job. They also taught their children to respect the dignity of a person for who they are, not by their race, religion, sexual orientation or social standing. Above all, Zimmy was devoted to her family. She remembered her grandchildren with cards and gifts. She was always willing to care for grandchildren when their parents needed the assistance. She loved the babies, whether they be her own, her grandchildren or great-grandchildren. As the family grew, she especially loved all the gatherings of the boisterous Davis Clan. The family thanks all the staff at Primrose Senior Living for their wonderful care of Lola, and the staff of Fairhope Hospice staff, especially Heather. A Memorial service will be held at First Congregational Church on November 18, 2023 at 2PM. Caring cremation by Rutherford- Corbin Funeral Home has taken place and a private burial is being planned. Emily Foster

Emily Foster

Age - 77

November 10, 2023

"Emily Elizabeth Foster (November 23, 1945 - September 9, 2023) was born in Tempe, Arizona, to her late parents Richard A. and Evelyn (Unger) Foster. After growing up in rural Vienna, Ohio, she attended Ohio State University where she earned a master's degree in English. OSU and its environs became an integral part of her personal and professional life. There she met well-known Philosophy professor Lee Brown and they shared an adventurous life together until his death in 2014. Emily was the beating heart of the neighborhood where she lived in the same house near the university for 50 years, even writing the book on the history of the community: The Ohio State University District: A Neighborhood History. She applied her impeccable research and writing skills to author two additional books on Ohio history: American Grit: A Woman's Letters from the Ohio Frontier and The Ohio Frontier: An Anthology of Early Writings. She was elegant and earthy, stubborn and generous and, above all, fearless. She was as comfortable with a wine glass as a chainsaw. Emily was both worldly and down-to-earth, equally at ease with her neighbors in the Hocking Hills and the internationally famous. She was fascinated by people who were curious and passionate about learning, rather than the merely famous. She notably commented upon meeting celebrities like Mick Jagger or Jimmy Buffett, "I found them shallow" or "Not my music, but people seemed to think he is talented. " Emily loved the outdoors: visiting her primitive cabin in the Hocking Hills, and hiking around the world. She was especially proud of her extensive treks through the Pyrenees and the Himalayas. Evan Brown, her beloved stepson, recalls her as "a great nurturer" of all living things, most especially found cats and dogs, many of which she offered forever homes in her house over the years. She would even carefully transport errant ants inside her home back outside unharmed. Emily and Lee's home was filled with parties and music, with Emily playing both flute and piano. She loved to laugh and came from a long line of jokesters, saying, "Everyone has lapses of taste, but better to laugh too often than too little. " After working as a grant writer and freelancer, she joined Columbus Monthly as a staff writer in 1985 and became a senior editor a few years later. She covered such diverse topics as homes and civic issues, as well as writing personal essays and illuminating profiles. She became editor of Cincinnati Magazine (a sister publication at the time of Columbus Monthly) in the late 1990s. Following a brief return stint at Columbus Monthly, she joined Steiner-Lesic Communications in 2000 as vice president and then moved to Ohio State as Associate Vice President, Communications, retiring in 2008. In addition to her parents, Emily was preceded in death by her husband, Lee Brown. She is survived by brothers Richard (Linda) Foster Jr. and Robert (Melissa) Foster, stepsister Jane (Chris) Walker and stepson Evan Brown, as well as nephews and nieces Gabriel Foster, Nicholas Foster, Henry Foster, Charles Foster, Margaret (Foster) Payne and Christine Foster. A celebration of Emily's life will be held Nov. 12 at Indianola Presbyterian Church, 1970 Waldeck Ave. in Columbus. Music will begin at 2 pm Eastern Standard Time, program at 2:30 and reception at 3:30 pm. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the Cat Welfare Association of Columbus.
