Webster City - Phyllis K. Bird 76, of Webster City and formerly of Rockwell City, passed away Sunday, October 8, 2023 at her daughter's home in Clarion, Iowa. Memorial Services will be 1:00 p. m. Saturday, October 14, 2023 at St. Francis Catholic Church, Rockwell City, with Fr. Lynn Bruch officiating at the Mass of Christian Burial. Burial will be at St. Francis Catholic Cemetery. Visitation will be 12:00 p. m. Noon at the Church until service time. Palmer & Swank Funeral Home, Rockwell City is serving the family. Memorials may be left to the discretion of the family. Phyllis is survived by her daughter Lynette (Dan) Smith of Clarion; son Jason Bird of Urbandale; granddaughter Kaylee (Isaac) Smith Tuttle of Forest City; grandson Max Smith of Webster City; great-granddaughter Hadley Kaye; sister Beverly (Bill) Osmundson of Rochester, MN; brother Greg (Trish) Moore of Rockwell City; and other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband Edward; and her parents, Merle and Helen (Kockovsky) Moore. Phyllis Kaye Moore was born April 15, 1947 at Fort Dodge. She was raised on the Moore family farm and graduated from Cedar Valley High School, with the Class of 1965. In 1967, she graduated from Iowa Central Community College. On June 8, 1968, she was united in marriage to Edward Bird and the couple established their home in Rockwell City. Phyllis worked as a property manager for several years and then for the United Bank of Iowa until her retirement in 2010. In 2015, the couple moved to Webster City. Ed passed away in 2022. Phyllis was a member of St. Francis Catholic Church, and her faith was very important to her. Phyllis loved her family, and enjoyed baking, gardening and crocheting.Show more

Darwin Pohlman, died on July 7, 2023, at Iowa Specialty Hospital in Clarion, Iowa. A memorial service will be held later. The family has chosen Boman Funeral Home (www. bomanfh. com) to care for their needs. He was born on June 21, 1952, in Belmond, Iowa, to John C and Edith Mae Kinley Pohlman, they lived in Renwick until moving to Eagle Grove in 1965. After graduating from Eagle Grove High School in 1971, he embarked on a career in the construction field. However, he eventually returned to his hometown of Eagle Grove and worked in maintenance at Taslers, in Webster City, and ADS until his well-deserved retirement. One thing that stood out about Darwin was his deep love for music. He took pleasure in not only listening to songs but also creating his own melodies that never failed to elicit a joyful reaction from those around him. Throughout his life, Darwin held a passion for various hobbies and interests. He found solace and adventure in fishing trips and hunting expeditions, immersing himself in the beauty of the great outdoors. Additionally, he possessed exceptional welding skills and found personal fulfillment when working on projects in his shop. Gardening was another pastime that brought him immense joy, he had a talent for cultivating thriving gardens. Darwin's devotion to family was evident in everything he did. He cherished spending time with his grandchildren and embraced his role as a loving uncle. The bond he shared with his family was strong, built upon shared experiences and unconditional love. Darwin’s family includes his wife Collette Pohlman and their children: Gary Steffey of Bonney Lake, WA, Darwin C. Pohlman of Sioux City, IA, John Lehman of Webster City, IA, Johnny (Sara) Pohlman of Sumner, WA, Lauren McKenzie of Eagle Grove, IA, Leighia McKenzie of Eagle Grove, IA, and Tanion Pohlman of Kansas City MO; grandchildren: Brandon, Brodie, Gemma, Keegan, Jaxun, Devlan, Fin, Daisy, Jude, and Eivin; sisters Etta Jean (Dan McCart) Pohlman and Teresa Rene (Rick) Olson, as well as his brothers Dean Pohlman, Clayton (Kaylene) Pohlman, and Gary (Cricket) Pohlman. Emily Lou (Mattingly) Harris, 94, entered her heavenly life on July 11, 2023 at Clarion Wellness and Rehabilitation Center. Emily was born in Clarion, Iowa November 16, 1928 to D. O. and Nellie (Kastler) Mattingly. She grew up on the family farm south of Clarion along with her brother Bernard Mattingly. Emily and Bernard attended Wall Lake No. 3 School through 8th grade. Emily graduated from Clarion High School May 1946. She attended Teachers College in Cedar Falls, IA and returned to the Clarion area to teach at Lincoln No. 8. Emily taught all grades K-8 for two years. Emily married Robert Harris June 19, 1948 at St. John's Catholic Church in Clarion, IA. They moved to Alexander, IA and farmed with Bob's parents. In 1954 they moved to Ackworth, Iowa to farm. Then in 1960 they purchased their own farm Southeast of Kanawha. They lived there until moving to Lake Cornelia in 1976. Four children were born to the couple: Gary, Vicki, Christi and Lori. Emily helped Bob on the farm, kept a large garden, preserved the produce, fed farm workers and was always there for her children. She was always prepared to make a meal or fix coffee for anyone that stopped at the house. Emily moved to Clarion in 2009 and lived there in her own home until she moved to The Meadows Assisted Living Facility in 2022. In March 2023 she moved to Clarion Wellness and Rehabilitation Center. Family members remaining to cherish Emily's memory are her four children: Gary of Clear Lake; Vicki (Dan) Jackson of Clear Lake; Christi (Bill) Broshar of Kanawha; Lori Lemieux of Coventry, Connecticut; nine grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren; brother-in-law Merle (Jacque) Harris of Walhalla South Carolina; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband Robert; her parents; Bob's parents E. R. & Jessie Harris; daughter-in-law Marcia Harris; son-in-law Don Lemieux; grandchildren Michelle Lemieux and Bradley Broshar; her brother Bernard; sisters-in-law Bethene Mattingly, Lois Johnson, Ardyce Bailey; brothers-in-law Robert Johnson, Kenneth Bailey. Diane Sue Truckenbrod, 76, of Eagle Grove (formerly of Winterset) passed away on Friday, December 30, 2022 at Iowa Specialty Hospital in Clarion, Iowa, surrounded by her family. She was born on October 11, 1946 to C. Maurice Powers and L. Marguerite Shaw in Winterset, Iowa. She graduated from Winterset High School in 1965 and attended the University of Iowa for one year and then spent a year in Minneapolis attending school to become a lab technician. She married Richard Truckenbrod on July 16, 1967 in Winterset. They lived in Alexandria, Louisiana where Richard was stationed in the Air Force. In 1969, they returned to Winterset where they remained until Diane moved to Eagle Grove in May of 2022. Diane spent most of her career as a lab technician at Madison County Hospital, with a gap to work at the Madisonian, and a local doctor's office. She retired from the hospital in 2010. Diane was civically active as a member of the Winterset Fire Department Auxiliary, American Legion Auxiliary, Lion's Club, St Paul Lutheran Church, and she volunteered at the hospital. She was a very crafty person and had many hobbies over the years from jewelry making, scrapbooking, and macrame to oil painting, and wood burning. Diane loved being a part of the Winterset Fire Department family and spent many great times at water fights and fire conventions. Above all, she loved spending time with her family, especially the grandchildren. Diane is survived by her sister Sharon (Jim) Cole, her brother Mark (Brenda) Powers; her children, Lori and Mike Olmstead, and Jason and Tammy Truckenbrod; her grandchildren Travis Truckenbrod, Stephanie Olmstead, Joshua OImstead, and Caitlyn Truckenbrod; and many other family members and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband. A visitation will be held from 4:00 to 7:00 p. m. , Wednesday, January 4, 2023 at the St. Paul Lutheran Church in Winterset. Funeral Services will be held 10:30 a. m. , Thursday, January 5, at the church. Burial will follow at the Winterset Cemetery. Ryan Daniel Gangestad, 39, of Des Moines, Iowa, formerly of Clarion, Iowa, passed away at his home on January 1, 2023, in Des Moines. Ryan was born on May 26, 1983, in Clarion, Iowa. He was the firstborn child of Daniel John & Patricia (Johnson) Gangestad. Ryan attended school in Clarion and graduated from high school in 2001. After graduation, Ryan briefly attended the University of Iowa before moving to Hollywood, California to complete schooling to become an audio recording engineer. Ryan worked in studios in California, Minneapolis, and Iowa. Ryan later decided to go to school at DMACC to become a welder. He welded at Artistic Iron Works in Des Moines, creating several pieces that are installed in various locations in the Des Moines Area. Ryan loved music of all kinds & was a voracious reader. He enjoyed playing his guitar, drawing, photography, collecting vinyl and instruments. Ryan had a fantastic sense of humor and he loved seeing people happy. He was very thoughtful & compassionate towards others, especially those in need. His two nieces brought him so much joy. He truly beamed every time he saw them. He was even putting together a space in his new house for his nieces: "Uncle Fance's Art and Music Institute for Girls. " He enjoyed many adventures with his brothers, cousins, and life-long friends. He enjoyed concerts, the Indy 500, the state fair, and riding his motorcycle, but mostly, he delighted in spending time with family, friends, and his dear dog, Lou. Ryan is survived by his mother, Patty Gangestad, brothers Grant (Sydney) Gangestad; Logan (Chloe) Gangestad; sister Kayla (fiance Adam Stuart) Gangestad; nieces Nora Gangestad, Kylie Stuart, & step nephews and niece Brayden, Graysen & Kaizley Stuart. Ryan was preceded in death by his Father, Dan Gangestad; his newborn baby brother, Joshua Gangestad; paternal grandparents John & Ella Gangestad; maternal grandparents Jimmie & Colleen Johnson; Aunt Terry (Johnson) Simmons; Uncle David Hugh Johnson; and cousin Alec Lawson. In the days preceding his death, despite his own troubles with paranoid schizophrenia and mental health issues, Ryan voiced his desire to help those who may be able to learn from his battle. In Ryan's honor, condolences may be made to be donated at the discretion of the family to the National Institute of Mental Health (NAMI) and other causes that Ryan was passionate about.
