Don Riggs Donald D. "Judge" Riggs, 90, of Conway Springs, passed away Friday, September 8, 2023 at Spring View Manor, Conway Springs, KS. Funeral services 10:30 a. m. , Saturday, September 16, 2023 at Conway Springs Methodist Church. Interment in Conway Springs Cemetery, Conway Springs, Kansas. Don was born June 18, 1933 west of Conway Springs, Kansas to Charley Ruben Riggs and Ethel Viola (Gibson) Riggs. He attended the McKibben rural school northwest of Conway Springs and Conway Springs High School where he graduated with the class of 1951. Don continued his education at Friends University while working at Industrial Uniform Company in Wichita. He soon became employed as a timekeeper for Cessna Aircraft in March of 1953. Don was drafted into the U. S. Army on July 15, 1953 where he served his country stationed in Germany during the Korean Conflict. He was honorably discharged on May 19, 1955 and returned to college and to Cessna Aircraft in Wichita. Don was united in marriage to Doris Imogene Gilges on July 29, 1955 at the First Christian Church in Conway Springs, Kansas. They made their first home in Wichita. In 1964, they moved to Derby before returning to the farm west of Conway Springs in 1968. Don received the title of "Judge Riggs" when elected in 1964 as the Police Judge of Conway Springs. He was later appointed as Municipal Judge for the City of Conway Springs in 1972 and served the local court for many years. In 1984, Don was also appointed Municipal Judge for the City of Argonia. He was later certified by the Kansas Supreme Court in 1990. Don farmed for 20 years west of Conway Springs. He and Doris moved into town in August of 1994 to 108 S. Highland. Don retired as a senior manufacturing engineer from Cessna Aircraft after 47 years of dedicated employment in 2000. Don was a member, Elder and active committeeman of the First Christian Church, Conway Springs. He was a member of Mistletoe Lodge #269 A. F. & A. M. where he served as master for seven terms. Don was also a member of Chapter 94 Royal Arch Masons where he served as High Priest for 20 years. He was a member of A. Tom Kirk Post #265 American Legion, serving in several capacities and participating in Memorial Day Services at Conway Springs Cemetery for many years. Don was preceded in death by his parents, one infant son Norman Ray Riggs, two brothers: Ralph Riggs and Charles Riggs; one sister Mary Jane Light and his daughter in law Lorie Riggs. He is survived by his loving wife Doris Riggs of 68 years; one son Scott Riggs of Wellington; Kansas; 3 grandsons: Cody (Alicia) Riggs, Jessie (Marvin Magdangal) and Jarod (Tristan) Riggs; three great grandsons: Avery, Gideon, Liam; special adopted relatives the Howard family and a number of other relatives and many friends. Lloyd Elvin Weishaar, age 88, went to the arms of Jesus on November 13, 2023. Funeral Service 10:30 a. m. Saturday, November 18, 2023 at the First Baptist Church, Milton, KS. Interment following in Milan Cemetery, Milan KS. Lloyd began his life journey on August 13, 1935, in the home of Elmer and Edith Weishaar. He attended grade school at Milan, KS moving to Argonia School at 4th grade. He enjoyed basketball, earning the nickname of "Leaping Lloyd. " Graduation was in 1953. Lloyd attended Friends University and was a member of the Singing Quakers Choir. He continued a lifelong interest in singing. Lloyd took over the family farm in 1955 after the illness and death of his father. He met Nona Lee Reneau in the 4th grade when her parents moved to Argonia. They were classmates. Their first date was in their sophomore year at the Argonia High School Athletic Banquet. Lloyd and Lee married during a wet wheat harvest on June 30, 1957. He served in the Air National Guard. Lloyd farmed for 67 years. Lloyd and along with Lee raised cattle, sheep, wheat, and other crops. He referred to himself as an ordained farmer. He loved reading the Bible and memorized many poems. Many Sundays, he was a Sunday School teacher, song leader and at times gave the sermon. Lloyd was a keen listener. He was thoughtful and kind. When in restaurants or out shopping it was not uncommon for Lloyd to strike up conversations with complete strangers and plant seeds of faith. During the winter months from 1969 to 1973, they designed and built a new home. Lloyd later built fireplaces for several neighbors. He designed and built the Argonia Plains Church including building set up, finishing work and rock laying with help from the church members. He served as an Argonia School board member, and as Argonia EMT responder. He was preceded in death by his brothers: Edward, Orwin, Milford and Charles. Lloyd is survived by his wife Lee, his children and spouses: Dale and Marcia; Paul and Laura; Donna and Roger; four grandchildren; 5 great grandchildren; many nephews, nieces and friends. Harley VanGieson, Sr. Harley Wayne VanGieson, Sr. , 86, of Rago, retired farmer and custom harvester, passed away Monday, November 6, 2023 at Wheatland Health Care Center, Kingman. Visitation with family present 5:30-7:30 Friday, November 10, 2023 at the Norwich Church of Christ, 106 S. Mayfield, Norwich, Kansas. Memorial Service 10:30 a. m. Saturday, November 11, 2023 at Norwich United Methodist Church. 623 E. Burns, Norwich, Kansas. Private Inurnment in Upchurch Cemetery, Norwich, Kansas. Harley was born November 13, 1936 at home in rural Kingman, Kansas to Olen (Pete) and Ruth (Brooks) VanGieson. He grew up in the Adams/Norwich community and graduated from Norwich High School with the class of 1954. Harley entered the U. S. Air Force on October 19, 1955 and was stationed in Texas before transferring to St. Paul, Minnesota where he met Marilyn Kay Wanous. The two were wed on June 8, 1957 in the Church of Christ, St. Paul, Minnesota. Harley was reassigned and stationed in El Paso, Texas where they were blessed with their first child, Harley Wayne VanGieson, Jr. in 1958. Harley was ultimately honorably discharged from the Air Force on July 2, 1959 and the family returned to Norwich, Kansas. During this time, Harley & Marilyn started a custom harvesting crew and were blessed with 4 more children, Robert Eugene (Bobby) in 1959, Lori Lynn in 1962, Randy Severin in 1967, and Jodi Kay in 1970. Harley was preceded in death by his parents; one son Randy VanGieson one granddaughter Angel VanGieson. Victoria Ann Grow, 70, formerly of Conway Springs, passed away peacefully surrounded by her husband and family on Friday, August 25, 2023. Rosary 9:30 a. m. Wednesday, August 30, 2023 followed by Funeral Mass at 10:00 a. m. both at Mary Immaculate Catholic Church, 1800 S Washington Ave, Wichita, KS. Committal service at 1:00 p. m. in St. Joseph Cemetery, Conway Springs, KS. Victoria was born August 4, 1953 at Wichita, Kansas to Bernard Michael "Bus" Ast and Mary Frances (Roths) Ast. She spent much of her childhood in Wichita where she attended Madonna High School. She later moved with her family to Conway Springs and graduated from Conway Springs High School with the class of 1971. Victoria was united in marriage to Jimmy Lee Grow on June 7, 1951 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Conway Springs, Kansas. They made their home in the Conway Springs community until moving to Wichita in 2015. Victoria worked at Cessna Aircraft in Wichita as a sealer. She retired in 2005. She was a member of the Mary Immaculate Catholic Church, Wichita, Kansas. Victoria was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers: Dwight, Mark and Greg Ast; two sons: Mathias and Steven Grow one grandson Gabriel Grow. She is survived by her husband Jim; sons, Christopher (Lisa) Grow, and Anthony (Sarah) Grow, her daughter Nicole (Jeremiah) Fisher; her daughter-in-law, Sarah Grow; brothers: Gerard Ast, Joe, John, Dan and Dave Doffing; sisters: Mary Kay Kruse, Linda Meyers, Teresa Pauly; 23 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews and a number of other relatives and many friends. Lorestine R. (Orth) Hemberger, 95, of Conway Springs, passed away at her home, Sunday night, July 9, 2023. Lorestine was born October 14, 1927 at Andale, Kansas to Anthony Nicholas Orth and Evelyn Margaret (Weber) Orth. She grew up at Andale and attended a one room school for eight years. She attended Andale High school where she graduated with the class of 1945. Lorestine was united in marriage to Lawrence Richard Hemberger on November 5, 1947 at Andale, Kansas. They made their home east of Argonia where they farmed until their retirement in 1980. They moved into their new home in Conway Springs in 1990. Lawrence passed away March 28, 2001. Lorestine was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, the Altar Society and Merry Matrons. Lorestine was secretary for St. Joseph Catholic School in Conway Springs, Kansas for 35 years. Her love of family and faith guided everything in her life. She was a seamstress and avid quilter while still enjoying playing cards with her longtime friends. She was also preceded in death by her parents; one brother Glenn Orth, two sisters: Roberta Bogner, Joanne Hemberger, one infant daughter Mary Ann Hemberger, one grandson Jacob Allen and one great granddaughter Amari Allen. Martin Shetlar Dr. Martin D. Shetlar, age 84, retired Chemistry Professor, of San Anselmo, California, formerly of Conway Springs, passed away on February 27, 2023. Memorial service 11:00 a. m. , Saturday, May 27, 2023 at the Conway Springs Methodist Church, Conway Springs, Kansas with Pastor Jacob Maforo officiating. Private family inurnment in Conway Springs Cemetery. Martin was born August 28, 1938, at Wichita, Kansas to Luther Shetlar and Dorothy (Taylor) Shetlar. He grew up in Conway Springs, Kansas graduating from Conway Springs High School with the class of 1956. He continued his education and attended Kansas State University, majoring in Chemistry. He received his PhD in Chemistry from the University of California, Berkeley. While at Berkeley, he met the love of his life, Margaret Smith, whom he married on December 30, 1966. They had one daughter, Sarah. Martin spent 40 years as a Professor of Chemistry and Pharmaceutical Chemistry in the School of Pharmacy at the University of California, San Francisco, retiring in 2008. He loved teaching, supervising the work of his postdoctoral research students, and the hands-on aspects of his own research. Martin was known as a kind, gentle man by all who knew him. He will be sorely missed by those he leaves behind. Martin was preceded in death by his parents and many aunts and uncles. David Wayne Brundage, of Conway Springs, Kansas, passed away on May 5, 2023, at the age of 65. David was born the son of Kendall and Pat (Landreth) Brundage on June 11, 1957 in Wellington, Kansas but was raised in Milan, Kansas. He later attended school in Argonia, graduating in 1975. David loved his family and enjoyed travelling, seeing the world and experiencing all the different things it had to offer. David was a hyper focused individual who poured his heart into his Border Collie dogs. He was an owner, trainer, and handler of the Border Collies he owned. David turned many of his dogs into champion herders and competed in numerous herding trials over the years before his health required him to retire from competition. Survivors include his son, Adam Petrowsky of Pleasant Hill, MO; and daughter, Andrea (Nas) Miller of Pratt, KS; grandchildren: Jacob Petrowsky, Abe Petrowsky, Eleanor Petrowsky, all of Pleasent Hill, MO, Tag Miller, Leddy Mae Miller, Crawford Miller, Holland Miller, all of Pratt, KS, mother, Pat Brundage of Argonia, KS; sisters: Julie (Steven) Janson of Kingman, KS and Kathy (Roger) Hayward of Winfield KS along with numerous other family members. He was preceded in death by his father Kendall Brundage. Visitation will be held at Frank Funeral Home on Wednesday, May 10, 2023 from 1:00 - 7:00 P. M.
