Donald Miller Obituary

Age - 87
October 7, 2023
Winnipeg, MB
With broken hearts we said goodbye on October 3rd, 2023, to Don, a husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend. Don passed away peacefully surrounded by loved ones at Riverview Health Center at the age of 87 after a brief battle with cancer. Left to mourn his passing is Pat, loving wife of 63 years and soul mate of 72 years. Also mourning Don's passing are his children Lorraine (Paul), Teresa (Gary), Darren, Wesley (Vanessa), grandchildren Teslin, Emma, Austin, Katrina, Dylan, Ryan, Lydia, Carson and Cash, siblings Ray and Lexis, many other family, and friends. Don is predeceased by his parents, Isabel and William Miller and infant brother Teddy. Don grew up in the north end of Winnipeg and attended Daniel McIntyre Collegiate Institute, where he met the love of his life at a water fountain between classes. In high school Don excelled in boxing at a provincial championship level while still helping build the family business after school and on weekends, where he spent time installing tv aerials for customers of Miller's TV. Don earned his degree as an Electrical Engineer from the University of Manitoba, spending 36 years at Manitoba Hydro until retirement. He was always a man of integrity, respected by colleagues, forming many friendships that lasted throughout his life. Don was very active and competitive in many sports, ranging from football and baseball in his younger years and shifting to bowling, curling, golf, badminton, squash, tennis, and bridge. Even after his diagnosis this past summer Don continued to play golf and tennis. His love of sports extended to being a long-time season ticket holder of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers and an avid Winnipeg Jets Fan. Together, Don and Pat loved to travel, seeking adventure, and connecting with new people all over the world. Don had a welcoming spirit and always had a kind word, a joke, or information to share. As a family we enjoyed many road trips across the continent involving camping, fishing and sight seeing, stopping to observe many electrical substations along the way. Don was a loving father and took tremendous pride in his children's accomplishments both big and small. He guided his four children by example with a gentle hand and a consistent moral compass, values which he also passed on to his grandchildren. Dad - you always inspired us to believe that we could achieve our dreams and yet remain humble and grounded - lessons we have passed on to our children. With an unwavering love you shared your life with mom and showed us that family was the most important part of your life. You are so loved, and we will miss you. We will treasure your memory in our hearts. We would like to thank our family and friends for their love and support these past few months. Thank you also to the palliative care health team at Riverview Health Center who gently cared for our father and provided a supportive environment where Don could demonstrate his compassion and caring for others to the very end of his life. A Memorial Service will take place at Peace Lutheran Church 350 Gilmore Ave Winnipeg, on Friday October 13th, 2023, at 11:00 am. Reception to follow and private family interment at Brookside Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Riverview Health Center, Canadian Cancer Society or Peace Lutheran Church Memorial Fund.
