Donald J. "Joe" Lori, age 85, of Caldwell, Ohio, died Saturday, September 2, 2023, at his home. He was born November 22, 1937, in Pleasant City, son of the late Andrew H. and Mary R. Lorey Lori. Joe was a 1956 graduate of Caldwell High School and was a retired United States Air Force veteran, having served from 1956-1977. He was employed locally at Summit Acres Nursing Home, where he was head of maintenance, Food Center, and several other places. He was a member of St. Stephen Catholic Church, where he served as an usher and Bible study leader. Joe enjoyed woodworking, gardening and keeping his yard looking nice, and he was a handyman who could fix anything. He also enjoyed working jigsaw puzzles. In his early years, he traveled many places and enjoyed fishing and hunting. He was very devoted to his family. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by one sister, Ruth Cubbison; and two brothers, Herman and David Lori. Surviving are his wife, Janet Marlene Murray Lori, whom he married July 2, 1957; his children, Daniel J. (Susan) Lori of Akron and Jody M. (Scott) Schell of Reynoldsburg; five grandchildren, Emily Schell, Molly Schell, Amanda Lori, Michelle Lori, and Nathan Applebee; one sister, Shirley Wharff of Columbus; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. Friends may call Friday, September 8, 2023, from 5-8PM at McVay-Perkins Funeral Home, 416 East Street, Caldwell, where a Christian Scripture Service will be observed at 8PM. Funeral Liturgy with Mass will be observed Saturday, September 9th at 10AM at St. Stephen Catholic Church in Caldwell with Fr. Dale Tornes as celebrant. A veteran's graveside service will follow at Mt. Olivet Cemetery conducted by the Noble County Veteran Service Organizations. James Russell "Jimmy" Wikander - "Santa Claus Ho, Ho, Ho" - left this fallen world to live in perfection with his Savior Jesus Christ on December 4th , 2023, peacefully at Altercare Summit Acres in Caldwell, Ohio. Jim was born November 25, 1955, the fourth son and tenth child of the late Roy E. Wikander, former pastor of First Baptist Church in Caldwell, and the late Marguerite Roebuck Wikander. Jim had attended the Golden Rule School and GNC Workshop in Byesville, a program his parents helped start. Though born with Down Syndrome, Jim was not treated any differently than his siblings. After the passing of his parents, he was able to live by himself until April, 2022, when he became a permanent resident of Summit Acres. Jim was an avid Ohio State fan. Awaiting his arrival in heaven were his siblings, Sergeant David Joseph Wikander, who lost his life in Vietnam in June of 1970, having been struck by lightning while protecting his troops; and Julia Robinson, who was swept into Jesus' arms in the tornado of 1998. Others awaiting his arrival were in-laws Ray Bonar, Alice Wikander, Jerry Simpson, and several nieces, nephews, and friends. Those left to share their loss are siblings Ruth Bonar of Spanaway, Washington; Mary Simpson of Sachse, Texas; Sharon (Terry) McConnell of Caldwell; Dan (Sandy) Wikander of Sligo, Pennysylvania; John (Sandi) Wikander of Eatonville, Washington; Anna (Mark) Hildebrand of Timblin, Pennsylvania; Beth (Barry) Snyder of Valparaiso, Indiana; Steve Wikander of New Bethlehem, Pennsylvania; and Tom (Laurie) Wikander of Fairmont, Pennsylvania; as well as his sister-in-law, Sara (Steve) Bond; brother-in-law, Jerry (Ellen) Robinson of Sarahsville; many nieces and nephews, including David Wikander, Jr. ; and the church families of First Baptist Church in Caldwell, New Harmony Baptist Church on Marietta Road, and Faith Baptist Church in Belle Valley. Jim was truly a blessing to those who came to know him. Friends may call Friday, December 8, 2023, from 4-8PM at McVay-Perkins Funeral Home, 416 East Street, Caldwell. . Ronald A. "Ron" Englehart, age 70, of Caldwell, Ohio, died Sunday, December 3, 2023, at his home. He was born October 25, 1953, in Cleveland, son of the late Carl A. and Alice Emily Beck Englehart. He was a construction worker and owned and operated Hart Construction. He was a member of the Pleasant Hill Church and he loved his church family, including Brother Dave and Martha Griffin. Ron enjoyed working around his home, gardening and canning. He loved spending time with his children and grandchildren. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by one sister, Karen Kuenzer; and one brother, Dennis Englehart. Surviving are his wife of 42 years, Dianne Zajdel Englehart, whom he married November 28, 1981; his children, Tracy M. (Monty) Zachary of Texas, Shauna L. Englehart (Tim Cain) of Belle Valley, Thomas R. (Stacy) Englehart of Dexter City, and Alison C. (Phillip) Davis of Senecaville; 9 grandchildren; 4 great-grandchildren; one brother, Carl A. Paula S. Larrick, age 52, of Caldwell, Ohio, died Friday, November 24, 2023, at her home. She was born December 2, 1970, in Marietta, daughter of Becky S. DeLong Barlow of Dexter City and the late Jerry L. Barlow, who died October 26, 2023. Paula was a 1989 graduate of Caldwell High School. She was employed as an aide at Caldwell Elementary School and at the Barlow Store in Dexter City for 14 years. She loved her family and friends, and was a devoted wife, mother, Mimi, daughter, and sister. In addition to her mother, she is survived by her husband, Robert D. Larrick, Jr. , whom she married June 6, 1996; her children, Justin M. (Shala) Stellfox of Zanesville, Morgan P. (Adam) Hollingshead of Norwich, Hope E. Larrick (Paul Grattan) of Belle Valley, and Michael E. Carolyn A. Thomas, age 82, of Caldwell, Ohio, died Wednesday, November 22, 2023, at Altercare Summit Acres. She was born July 24, 1941, in Cambridge, daughter of the late Fred W. and Helen A. Groves Saunders. She retired in 1996 from March Electric in Cambridge and also worked as a receptionist for GMN in Byesville. Carolyn attended Ragan's Chapel in Belle Valley and the Ava United Methodist Church and she wrote every word in the Bible by hand into a notebook. She enjoyed sewing, cross stitching, flowers and gardening, and reading. She loved spending time with her grandchildren. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband, Forrest D. Thomas, Sr. , whom she married November 8, 1957, and who died in January, 2004; a great-granddaughter, Savannah Bates; a great-grandson, Liam Bates; one sister, R. Frances Strauss; and one brother, F. William Saunders. Surviving are her children, Daya S. Kirkman of Statesville, North Carolina, Juanita D. "Nita" (Joseph) Yurco of Mooresville, North Carolina, Teresa L. Lonzo worked in retail and was a member of the Main Street Church of Christ in Caldwell. He was devoted to his wife. She was born at Marietta, Ohio on August 13, 1935 a daughter of the late Parker and Lottie Opal Morrison Crum. Eva was a homemaker and a member of the Crum Ridge Church of Christ, Caldwell, Ohio, where she was a former Sunday school teacher. She was a former 4-H advisor and was a member and former president of the Noble County Stepping Stones. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, James N. Bettinger, whom she had married on December 24, 1953 and who passed away on March 30, 2015; two sisters, Virginia "Ellen" Martin and Evelyn Marlee Crum; two brothers, John Carlos Crum and Vernon Woodrow Crum; an infant sister, Helena Crum; a son-in-law, Michael Daggett. Surviving are two daughters, Cynthia Daggett of Belpre, Ohio and Heather (Michael) Bass of Caldwell, Ohio; three sons, Rodney (Darlene) Bettinger, Jeffery (Merna) Bettinger of Woodsfield, Ohio, Bradley (Beth) Bettinger of Caldwell, Ohio; one brother, Larry Crum of Caldwell, Ohio; fifteen grandchildren; twenty-three great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; three brothers-in-law; three sisters-in-law. Austin B. Blake III age 57, of the farm in Cumberland, OH passed away Monday, November 13, 2023, at the Genesis Hospital in Zanesville, OH due to an unexpected medical issue. He was born November 24, 1965, in Clarksburg, WV. Austin was the son of Austin Blake Jr. of Green, OH and the late Linda Samples Morris. Austin was a man whose actions were driven by his strong values. He was a ponderer. A deep thinker. He took matters into deliberation prior to acting. He had integrity and this made him an honorable man. One might not assume this based on his cool demeanor and the humor (often inappropriate) he brought to any situation. He thrived on routine, but he did not waver when it was disrupted. He went with the flow which brought peace to the women in his life as he was a "girl dad", through and through. Austin was an avid outdoorsman and cared for the land he resided on with his family. He was often found mowing, piddling, and tinkering with tasks that might improve the scenic property he so cherished. Although he might have suggested otherwise, he had remarkable "people skills" which served him well in his 22-year career with Nickles bakery. He was not a man to take to the grocery store if you were in a hurry. In addition to his mother, he is preceded in death by his father-in-law Gayle C. Bachtel, a man who greatly influenced Austin and guided him in developing the traits that allowed him to care for the land - and his girls. Austin is also preceded in death by one of his favorite companions, his dog Moose. Those left to cherish his memory are his wife Dawn R. Bachtel Blake whom he married July 11, 1987; two daughters Sara (Danny Elliott) Blake of Zanesville and Megan (Chris) Rowe of Cumberland; brother Greg Blake of Tallmadge, OH; cousin Jimmy (Lin) Samples of Vienna, OH and Tina (Neil) Vick of Akron, OH; aunt Diana (Mark) Dalic of Sandusky, OH; mother-in-law Gloria G. Bachtel of Cumberland; his beloved companion, his dog Stanley. Austin is also survived by many friends. Martha Valko

Age - 91

On November 13, 2023 surrounded by family and her little dog Pippa, Martha passed away peacefully in her sleep after a battle with Lymphoma. Born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1931, Martha grew up a city girl in a large brownstone house on 9th Street. The daughter of Greek immigrants Panagiota and Evangelos Mandras and one of nine children, the house was always lively, filled with friends and relatives, laughter, music, dancing, and the smell of fresh bread baking in the oven. She attended the Philadelphia High School for Girls where she graduated with high honors. Although she traveled later in life and lived in many exotic places, she was a Philadelphia girl through and through, and never lost her passion for Philly hot pretzels and cheese steaks! She attended the Greek Orthodox Church regularly and sang in the choir, and that's where she met her husband of 58 years, Nicholas G. Valko. They soon settled in their first home in Huntington Valley where their daughters Maria and Nicolette were born. Shortly after that, they embarked on a wonderful years-long adventure. Both Martha and Nick were very connected to their Greek heritage and developed a life-long love affair with Greece. Through Nick's work, they lived in Athens for 5 years then another 5 years in Buenos Aires, before returning to the United States, first in Columbus Ohio and finally settling back in the Philadelphia area in 1973. After Nick retired, they moved to Florida. She'd had it with the cold weather! Through 35 years, they spent every summer in their apartment in Vouliagmeni, Greece. Martha loved the sun, the sea and everything about Greece. Martha loved traveling and was always willing to live in different places, try new things, and even learn new languages. She was a great entertainer and her home was always filled with friends and family. Her huge holiday gatherings were legendary, especially Greek Easter and she would prepare all the food herself, never complaining. Her door was always open and her warmth and hospitality made everyone feel welcome. She was involved with many charities, a very social person who was always active in the community. Martha was a wonderful artist spending hours in her studio creating beautiful portraits and landscapes using pastels, oil and charcoal. She loved trying new methods to express her endless creativity, even delving into woodwork at one point and building unique birdhouses. She also had musical talent. She loved to play the piano and having never bothered to learn to read musical notes, she still played the piano perfectly, by ear. Martha was also a voracious reader, she read constantly. She loved so many things; antiques, art, cooking, opera, and real estate to name a few, and we all learned to appreciate them through her. She was deeply spiritual and made sure her family had spiritual strength too. Martha loved children most of all. When her beloved granddaughter Jane was born, she doted on her and enjoyed playing with her for hours on end. She was a big kid at heart! After she was widowed, Martha spent her last 13 years living in California with her daughter Nicolette and Nikki's husband John. In 2020 she moved with them full time to their ranch in Santa Barbara County. She loved the countryside and she saw beauty in absolutely everything. She marveled at the fields of fresh produce in the area. She loved star gazing and watching the clouds and the sunset. She was a true nature lover. Maria spent a lot of time in California and Jane was there too, so she was happily surrounded by her family. Martha instilled in her daughters empathy and respect for all living creatures. Her compassion for animals inspired Nikki and John to open their nonprofit in her honor; Martha's Farm Animal Sanctuary, which provides a forever home for neglected, abandoned and re-homed farm animals. Martha loved visiting the animals every day and was so proud of the work being done there. The sanctuary is her legacy. Most importantly, Martha was the best wife to Nick, who ardently adored her, and the most wonderful mother to Maria and Nicolette, and grandmother to Jane. Her love for her family was so strong and she made sure her family always felt loved and supported unconditionally. She was so gentle and kind, even tempered, optimistic and endlessly patient. Never an unkind word towards anyone, she had a positive outlook on life and it never wavered, regardless of the circumstances. Beautiful inside and out, Martha was one in a million. We miss you so much Mom. Martha is survived by her daughter Maria, her husband Harry and her granddaughter Jane; also her daughter Nicolette and her husband John. Per her wishes, Martha was buried with her husband, Nick, in a private service at Silverbrook Cemetery. Charles Zwick

Charles Edward Zwick age 93, of Caldwell, OH passed away Tuesday, November 7, 2023 at Altercare Summit Acres Skilled Nursing & Rehab in Caldwell surrounded by his loving family. He was born February 23, 1930 in Monroe County, OH the son of the late Charles I. and Gertrude Crock Zwick. He was an active member of St. Michael Catholic Church in Carlisle for many years and a current member of St. Stephen Catholic Church in Caldwell. He served and protected his Nation in the United States Marine Corps. Charles was a dairy and beef farmer for most of his life. He eventually went on to work for the B&N Coal Company for many years. He was a member of the Soil Conservation Service and the Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service. He was honored for 70 years in the American Legion having been a member of the former Summerfield American Legion Post #415 and a current member of the Belle Valley American Legion #641. Charles loved hosting family gatherings, gardening, watching purple martins, and hunting. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his wife Joann C. Crum Zwick, whom he married June 14, 1952 and who passed September 15, 2021; a son John Zwick who passed away March 18, 1976; siblings Ella Smithberger, Carl Zwick, Edna Bjorkman, Gertrude Sorg, and Mary Kress.
