Don Roger Crays was born to Donald and Anna (Herynk) Crays on October 1, 1935 on a farm southwest of Tobias, NE. He passed away September 23, 2023 in Grand Island, NE at the age of 87. He was the oldest of five children. He attended Atlanta Center Country School through 8th grade and graduated from Tobias High School in 1953. Before becoming a full time farmer, he worked for the railroad in Lincoln, appraised land in Custer County, constructed concrete elevators around the Milligan area, and worked at the ammunition depot in Hasting. Don began farming at the age of 15 with his grandfather Joe Herynk on the farm that eventually became his lifelong home. He was proud to be the owner of three farms that have been in the family for over 100 years that all received the Nebraska Pioneer Farm Family award. Don was married to Sheila Elznic in Exeter, NE on November 6, 1965. To this union, three daughters were born; Stephanie, Linda and Clara. His love for cattle started at a young age when he began showing in 4-H, this led to over 40 years as a 4-H leader mentoring many youth including his sisters and daughters. His passion for Polled Hereford cattle began in 1976 with the purchase of four heifers from his brother, Roland. Little did he know this endeavor would be the beginning of many friendships and "family vacations" to cattle shows and events across the nation. Don \u0026amp; Sheila served as Nebraska Junior Polled Hereford Advisors for three years and were awarded the Nebraska Hereford Association Outstanding Breeder and Pioneer Breeder Awards. He was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church, serving on the parish council, the Tobias Volunteer Fire Department and EMTs, serving as the Fire Chief, the Nebraska Hereford Association, and the American Hereford Association. Don will long be remembered for his orneriness, his signature cowboy hat and cigar, his passion for cattle and horses but most of all his dedication to his family and friends. Don was preceded in death by his parents Don \u0026amp; Anne Crays, in-laws Clarence \u0026amp; Evelyn Elznic, grandson Seth McKay, brother-in-law Leo Etter, and sister-in-law Norma Crays. Don is survived by his wife Shelia of Tobias; daughters, Stephanie (Kirk) Jensen, Courtland, KS, Linda (Grant) McKay Marysville, KS, Clara (Tim) Grace, Humboldt, SD; grandchildren, Cody, Casey (Rileigh), Jessica Jensen, Bailey McKay, Kane, Weston, Xavier, \u0026amp; Blaze Grace; Great-Granddaughter Blair Jensen; Siblings, Roland Crays, Barry (Jean) Crays, Sharon (Jerry) Kroese, and Karen Etter; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Barbara Rae Nunns was born Aug 16, 1949, in Superior, NE and passed away November 1, 2023 at Heritage Crossings in Geneva following a short battle with cancer. When I was young the family was living on a farm where the Lovewell Damn is now. Around the age of 9 the family moved to Burwell; dad owned a filling station. From there we moved to Big Springs, NE. In Big Springs the family lived on a farm just North of town. We had milk cows and horses. Dollie the horse was trained to pull a 2-wheel cart, the problem was every time Dollie passed gas she pooped in the cart. You always had to wear your boots! Remember when Ron stuck his tongue on a propane tank one winter. We had no indoor plumbing, around the age of 11 or 12 the family moved to Hastings where dad worked at the ammunition depot. We then moved to Norway, Kansas just North of Concordia. This is where Mom and Dad got divorced. Mom moved to Geneva with Barb, Ralph, Ron and Jim. Chuck stayed with Dad in Kansas. Barb graduated from Geneva High in 1967, and from there she graduated from Lincoln School of Commerce for Business 2 years later. She married Dale Nunns on October 12, 1968 at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church. Dale farmed and trucked, and Barb worked at the Hilltop Cafe, Holroyd Bakery and Golden Rod, while painting all the time. Gary was born September 17, 1969, Doug was born December 17, 1973 and died at birth. Nicole was born March 1, 1975. She continued to work at the motel and painted for the remainder of her life. She enjoyed camping, golfing and a beer once in a while with friends. A lot of construction and safety meetings took place at the gazebo. She loved her Schnauzers and Volkswagen Bug. She is survived by her husband Dale, son, Gary with wife Brooke of Shelton; daughter, Nicole with husband Brian of Geneva; 5 grandchildren, Jesse, Ryan, Tren, Kali and Cole along with 2 great grandchildren, Kaaya and Kiira; brothers, Ralph and June Graham of Geneva, Ron and Mitzi Graham of Lincoln, Jim and Sherry Graham of Lincoln; sisters and brothers-in-law, Carol and Lavern Vejraska of Milligan, Fay and Will George of Seattle, Washington and many nephews, nieces, family and friends. "A Memorial Service for Janile will be held on Wednesday, November 15, 2023 at 1:30 p. m. at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Lincoln, Nebraska. Pastor Jeff Bloom will preside over the Memorial Service. A private Graveside Service will be held in the Tobias Cemetery, Tobias, Nebraska. Public Visitation with family present will be Tuesday from 4:00 p. m. to 8:00 p. m. at Farmer \u0026amp; Son Funeral Home in Geneva. Memorials are suggested to the Immanuel Lutheran Church. There will be a meal and time of fellowship in the church fellowship hall immediately following the Memorial Service. Janile requested pulled pork, gizzards, baked beans, potato salad and desserts and she would want everyone to share in a meal and enjoy the fellowship. Janile Jean Endorf was born on March 7, 1950 to Herbert E. Endorf and Dorien A. (Nolte) Endorf, at Fairbury, Nebraska. On March 19, 1950, through the washing of holy baptism, by Pastor Emil Winkler, she became a child of God and an heir of eternal salvation. Janile's sponsors were her grandmother, Louise Nolte and her aunt, Hilda Nielsen. At her confirmation on March 22, 1964 by Pastor Erich Prange, she renewed her baptismal vow through the Rite of Confirmation and was granted forgiveness of all of her sins and received the redeeming grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, through the gift of Christ's body and blood by means of the Lord's Supper. Janile attended Zion Lutheran School, first grade through eighth grade, where she learned about the love Jesus had for us, where He suffered, died, and rose again. She was taught the Bible Stories in both the Old and New Testament, and she was taught to memorize many of the Bible passages. She attended Tobias High School for three years, and then attended Meridian High School her senior year, graduating with the class of 1968. The class of 1968 was the first class to graduate from Meridian High School. She then attended St. John's Lutheran College in Winfield, Kansas, and was trained to be a Parish Worker. Janile received a call to Peace Lutheran Church in McCook, Nebraska and was installed in February of 1971. Her duties at Peace Lutheran included church secretary, teaching Sunday School and Vacation Bible School, Youth leader, visiting the sick and shut- ins, part-time organist, playing the guitar for contemporary worship services, and other duties. As youth leader she attended LSV and ALSV bible study camps. These camps were held at Concordia, Seward, and also at Mount Casper at Casper, Wyoming. At these camps, bible study was held and the youth organized Vespers in the evenings. Before the Vespers, Pastor Frese led the youth in Foot Frolics which he called circle games. She also organized youth trips to Estes Park Colorado (Went to Rocky Mountain National Park); Rapid City, South Dakota (attended the Passion Play in Spearfish); and Kansas City, Missouri (Had fun at Worlds of Fun and attended a Royals baseball game. ) These trips included a bible study in the morning and another bible study in the afternoon. A vesper service was held in the evening where many shared their faith with others. On December 8, 1979, Janile was married to Timothy G. Campbell at Peace Lutheran Church in McCook by Pastor John K. Raess. God blessed her with the gift of three children, Heath, born November 29, 1980, Steven, April 23, 1982, and Heather, April 17, 1983. Janile and her children moved to Tobias in October of 1985 and she moved to Lincoln in October of 2011. At Tobias she was a member of Zion Lutheran Church. For 12 years, she was responsible for the book work for the Zion hot lunch program; she served on the Board of Education; and was church treasurer for many years. The greatest joy was teaching 5th and 6th grade bible class and being an organist at Zion Lutheran Church, Tobias and also at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Daykin. Janile became a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Lincoln in 2011. She was a part-time organist and served years as the church treasurer. For 27 years and 11 months, she worked for State of Nebraska with DHHS. Janile worked in the Geneva and Crete Offices and filled in at the York Office. She then worked at the DHHS Call Center, Lincoln, and retired on January 27, 2023. Janile's contagious personality allowed her to touch so many lives. Someone's age or roots never stopped her from displaying her amazing gift of gab. This ability allowed Janile to have many friends of all sorts and once you were Janile's friend, you were friends for life. For the past decade, Janile's largest joy in life, besides talking and sharing stories of her life, were her grandchildren. She loved being at all their activities. Grandma admired Brooklynn's passion for softball. She made her way to many tournaments and even practices. Even though soccer was not her favorite sport to watch, she really enjoyed watching Jaxon play, even when Jaxon got tired and called in his own sub to continue the game. She would laugh with excitement at the anticipation of what Jaxon would do next. Grandma tried her best to make it to all of Barret's sports; she really loved watching him grow and improve over the years. Zoey could see grandma watching her gymnastic practices many times through the year. Grandma went to as many as she could, even making it one last time, the week before being called to her heavenly home. Janile enjoyed helping with the kid's homework, studying their spelling words, and letting them practice reading library books. She especially loved Zoey reading bible stories with her in her chair. Her last full day on this Earth, tired and half asleep, she requested to give Zoey and Barret their spelling words. She just really loved any and all time she got to enjoy with her children and grandchildren. Janile loved her grandchildren pampering her, from nail polish to foot massages. Grandma could always count on Jayda for a full spa experience. Janile also loved a good card game. If you had a deck, she was always dealt in. She taught us all how to play. Her favorite games were Rook with her children and Skipbo, Uno and Trash with the grandchildren. Janile's faith in our Lord was very strong and carried her through her whole life. From her youth, through the test's of life, all the way through her passing. Even after being told the end was sooner than she deserved, she never wavered. Her only grievance, was not having more time for the grandchildren as she knew she wouldn't be there to see the them grow and learn through life. She could talk about faith with anyone willing to converse. Being a generous giver, she didn't always have a lot to give, but was always willing to give all she had. Janile was called to her heavenly Home on Wednesday, November 8, 2023 and the Lord Welcomed her Home, at the age of 73 years, 8 months, and 1 day. Janile was preceded in death by her son, Steven; her parents, Herbert and Dorien Endorf; both sets of grandparents; all of her uncles and aunts; and three of her cousins. She is survived by two children, Heath Campbell and wife Morgan, Heather Yager and husband Jesse; Grandchildren, Brooklynn and Jaxon Campbell, Jayda, Zoey and Barret Yager; Her brother, Dwayne Endorf and wife Teresa; Nephews, James and John Endorf; Niece, Rebecca Endorf; Cousins and many other relatives and friends. Graveside Services will be held following the Funeral Service at the Bethel Cemetery in rural Carleton, Nebraska. Memorials are to be directed to the Carleton Fire \u0026amp; Rescue or Shickley Fire \u0026amp; Rescue. JoAnn W. Row was born at the family farm north of Carleton on October 18, 1934 to J. W. and Pearl (Griffith) Maust. She departed this life at Fairview Manor, November 4, 2023 at the age of 89 years and 17 days. She was the youngest of five children. She attended a country school a mile north of the farm until transferring to Carleton Public Schools and graduated with the Class of 1951. JoAnn also spent one year at Doane College where she toured with the Doane Singers. Singing was a big part of her life. She sang for many weddings and funerals. JoAnn was united in marriage on February 13, 1954 to Douglas Row at Bethel Church of the Brethren. To this union five children were born Mark Douglas, Michael David, Jeffrey Duane, Valerie Denise and Michelle Renee. JoAnn was the type of person that always wanted to be where the action was; not only on the farm but at the many activities that the children were in. She was a song leader at church and taught the nursery for many years. In 1977 her life changed in a big way when she accepted Jesus as her Lord and Savior. She started by going to local care homes. She was also involved in missions. She went twice to help in an orphanage in Haiti. Before she went on the trip, the Lord showed her she would be surrounded by brown skinned children but in Haiti they were very dark. Then she went on a mission trip to Guyana and here were the brown skinned children she had seen. JoAnn \u0026amp; Doug were a part of a group that shared the gospel at the Lincoln Correctional Center. She led worship and some of the men played instruments. Once we forgot to have the guard unlock the room that the instruments were in. But no problem, one of the men "unlocked" it. On August 7, 2023 JoAnn entered Fairview Manor Skilled Nursing to receive the loving care that she needed. She is preceded in death by her parents, J. W. \u0026amp; Pearl Maust, twin sisters Doretta Houser \u0026amp; Doris Wade and two infant brothers. She is survived by her husband Doug and children Mark \u0026amp; Eileen Row, Humbolt, NE, Michael Row of rural Bruning, Jeff \u0026amp; Sally Row of rural Shickley, Valerie \u0026amp; Dan Papik of Crete, NE \u0026amp; Michelle \u0026amp; Steve Vogt, Fairview, OK. Marie Inez (Shepperson) Olson was born on December 15, 1924 and passed away on September 2, 2023 in Geneva, NE at the age of 98. She was the oldest of 2 children born to (Marion) Earl and Myra Shepperson. She was baptized and confirmed in the 1st Evangelical Lutheran Church in Rock Port, MO in 1938. She graduated high school in 1942 from Rock Port High School. She had worked in the local bakery and at the soda fountain in the local pharmacy to help support her family. She married Raymond Olson in 1944 and they moved numerous times to support his military service. After the war, they moved to Lincoln, NE to raise their family. In 1959 they moved with their 3 children to Papillion, NE. She led a life of service to her church, her community, and her family. She and Raymond worked for and retired from Western Electric. She was an active member of the Pioneer organization before and after retirement. She volunteered and supported the church in numerous positions. She served the community with leadership positions in Scouts, Girl Scouts and Campfire Girls. She was a proud--and funny--clown. After completing Clown College, she recruited and performed with her children and grandchildren in nursing homes, senior centers, parades, and other events. Her dedication to travel and creating educational experiences was passed to her family. Every year she and Raymond took their children, then grandchildren on vacations. These many trips included crossing the US to see all the state capitals and national parks. She is preceded in death by her parents Marion Earl and Myra Shepperson, an infant grandson Benjamin, her brother Merle Shepperson, a nephew Mark Shepperson, her husband Raymond Olson, and a son Douglas Olson. She is survived by daughter Marla and (Jim) Runge, son David and (Connie) Olson, daughter-in-law Lillie Olson, 10 grandchildren, and 19 great grandchildren. Dennis Gurley

"Dennis Elra Gurley was called to his heavenly home in Milligan, Nebraska on September 1, 2023 surrounded by his family. Dennis was born to Willard and Neola (Tupy) Gurley on October 10, 1943, in Omaha, Nebraska. Dennis was baptized as an infant and confirmed his faith when he was in eighth grade in the Missouri Synod Lutheran Church. As a child, Dennis grew up traveling with his family, as his father was on active duty in the Army. Dennis lived in many places during his early life including; Oklahoma, California, North and South Carolina, and Germany, but Dennis eventually came back to Nebraska, living in the Crete and Friend areas, until finally settling in Milligan for the remainder of his life. Dennis would share stories of his childhood such as fishing under the Golden Gate Bridge while living in California, playing with Little Big Chief in Oklahoma, playing baseball in Germany, and how he was active in the Boy Scouts where he eventually became an Eagle Scout. Dennis graduated from Friend High School in 1962 where he earned the nickname "Gunner". While in high school he excelled in football and track. After graduation, he joined the U. S. Army and was in the 82nd Air Borne, stationed at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. Dennis spent active duty in the Dominican Republic during the Vietnam Era, earning an Expeditionary Service Parachutist Badge. Dennis returned home from active duty and obtained a Bachelor of Science Degree in Education from the University of Nebraska, majoring in History. After being an educator and high school coach for several years, he decided to pursue other opportunities in sales. Dennis and his son James moved to Ruskin after Dennis took a teaching position. There he met the love of his life Kimberly Hinz. Dennis and Kimberly were married in Ruskin, Nebraska in 1983. Together they had four children: Mollie, Abigail, Seth, and Sara Jo. Dennis loved to teach his children to garden, hunt, fish, about world history and geography, and most of all, how to drive the country roads. Later in life, he had 10 grandbabies to love. He enjoyed spending time teaching them the same things he taught his children. Dennis was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Tobias, Nebraska, Lifetime Member of the V. F. W. Post 4959 Crete, Nebraska, American Legion HSSK Post #240 Milligan, Nebraska and WFLA. After a 5-year battle with Dementia/Alzheimer's, Dennis passed into the Lord's arms. Dennis was preceded in death by his parents Willard and Neola Gurley; infant brother Keith; father-in-law James D. Hinz, uncle Dale Tupy and nephew Jacob Kleen. Dennis is survived by his wife, Kimberly Ann (Hinz) Gurley of Milligan, Nebraska; Sons, James (Allison) Gurley of Ashland, Virginia, Seth (Ashlea) Gurley of Duncan, Nebraska; Daughters, Mollie (Mike) Gurley-Drake of Firth, Nebraska, Abigail (Brent) Reinsch of Geneva, Nebraska, Sara Jo (Bryan) Kunert of Fairmont, Nebraska; Brothers, Garry (Jean) Gurley of Friend, Nebraska and Michael Gurley of Edmond, Oklahoma; Grandchildren, Jade (Lukas) Wickam, Connor \u0026amp; McKenzie Drake, Henry \u0026amp; Theadore Reinsch, Elaina, Emmalynne, \u0026amp; Eleanor Gurley, Hailey \u0026amp; Jordyn Kunert; Great Grandchildren, Emmerson \u0026amp; Grace Wickam; Godchildren, J. "Alice Jean Filipi was born to Jerry and Emily (Vidlak) Placek on a farm in Jefferson County on August 4, 1933 and passed away Tuesday, August 8, 2023 at Country House Assisted Living in Lincoln, Nebraska at the age of 90 years and 4 days. Alice attended country school and graduated from Swanton High School with the class of 1949. She was married to Lumir Filipi at the Swanton Methodist Church on April 25, 1951. Four children were born to this union: Gary, Larry, Loren and Donna. As a young girl, Alice worked at Rezabek's IGA store. After marrying Lumir, they made their home on a farm northwest of Western where she lived for 40 years before retiring to Milligan. After raising her family, she went to work at Milligan House of Meats for 9 years and then went to work at Fillmore County Hospital where she worked in housekeeping for 10 years, with the last 2 years being a supervisor. Her favorite job was babysitting James Sluka until he attended kindergarten. Alice enjoyed her 9 grandchildren: Gene, Dan, Nate, Lindsay, Amber, Troy, Dustin, Tyler \u0026amp; Kyle. She also enjoyed her great grandchildren: Carter, Samantha, Dylan, Cade, Jax, Reese, Palmer, Harlo, Briar \u0026amp; Callie. She spoiled them with rolls, cinnamon rolls, kolaches and everything else yummy. Alice was proud of their many accomplishments, and she attended countless activities including football, volleyball, basketball, soccer, baseball, \u0026amp; dance. Although we were sad to see Alice go, we take comfort in knowing that she was waiting for her son, Larry, as he made the journey nearly 16 hours after her passing. We are confident a good reunion is occurring between Alice, Lumir, Gary and Larry. A Funeral Service for Alice was held on Friday, August 11, 2023 at 11:00 a. m. at Milligan Auditorium in Milligan, Nebraska. Kim Dunker presided over the Funeral Service. The recorded selections played during the service were "Life's Railway To Heaven" and "Innocence Waltz. " Pallbearers for the Funeral Service included Gene Filipi, Dan Filipi, Nate Filipi, Troy Filipi, Dustin Filipi, Tyler Wentworth, Kyle Wentworth, and James Sluka. Honorary pallbearers included Lindsay Densberger and Amber Morrison. A Graveside Service was held in the Atlanta Cemetery following the Funeral Service.
