On January 4, 1956, Derrick J. Petway was born in Cleveland, Ohio to parents Ann and Jesse. In 1973, Derrick matriculated from Glenville Highs School to attend The University of Akron. In a pursuit of constant knowledge, he also studied at Cleveland State University. His professional accomplishments include working as a Paramedic and a Machinist in which he demonstrated mastery in both. Personally, Derrick displayed his love of music by playing the piano and saxophone. He was also a competitive chess player, and aspiring sketch artist. In addition to his love for the fine arts, Derrick was known for his study and mastery of the law. Many called upon his expertise to gain a deeper understanding of litigious matters. Throughout his life, Mr. Petway maintained relationship with a Church. Ultimately, he found his Church home at First Church Congregational; Rev. Tom Cofer, Senior Pastor. Derrick loved friends and family and often spoke of his desire to speak to and meet with all close to his heart. He married Carmela Callahan in 1974, and later married Jovon Jones in 1989. Derrick fathered four children to include Erika Petway Baker, Judson Young, Brian Petway, and Devon Petway. From that lineage, two grandchildren were born - Judson Young II and Madisen Baker. Other surviving family members include Brother Roger Petway, Niece Naeemah Alston, Cousin Holland Petway III, along with a host of other cousins, nieces, a nephew, and special friend Julie Guilford.
